With Trump's latest threat against Chinese international students, academic exchange and tuition dollars are at risk
Although specifics of the new policy are still unclear, Ye sees Rubio's 'rejection' of Chinese students as 'a strong signal that we want to go back to the '70s,' she said, before 'the whole global collaboration in science, technology, and education.' 'The dominant narrative seems to be that the US possesses abundant resources and cutting-edge technologies, and that international students come to 'steal' them for their home countries,' she observed. Advertisement But that's not true, she said: International students come because American universities are world-renowned for nurturing individuality and innovation. 'This environment is like the air we breathe — often unnoticed, but incredibly precious to those who have never experienced it.' Foreign-born students make up almost 18 percent of postsecondary enrollment in Massachusetts, more than anywhere in the country, Boston Indicators found in Advertisement From Boston to the Berkshires, those students support $3.9 billion in economic activity and more than 35,000 jobs, according to While India and other countries also send large numbers of students here, it's particularly difficult to separate the US-China academic exchange from 'China is one of the most powerful nations in the world, so you want to have as many relationships and dependencies between the two countries as possible,' said Larry Ladd, a former budget officer at Harvard and now a financing expert at the Association of Governing Boards of Universities and Colleges. 'When you create pure antagonism, it's not good for anybody.' Students who had their visas revoked would have to go to a US consulate abroad to return here, a process that immigration attorney Dan Berger said takes time. Once a visa is revoked, US Immigrations and Customs Enforcement can put the student into deportation proceedings, which is what happened to 'It may not happen to many,' said Berger, 'but it is a real concern.' Rubio's promised revocation of visas for Chinese students comes on the heels of Advertisement With fewer students from China, Harvard, Northeastern, and Boston University could see a notable reduction in their incoming classes, where at least Many international undergraduate students pay full tuition to attend US colleges, which allows schools to provide more expansive financial aid to domestic students. Ladd said while universities such as Harvard could replace international undergraduates with more US students who can pay top-dollar, that's less likely at the graduate school level. Roughly half of international students in Massachusetts are pursuing master's degrees. For colleges without the same brand power as Harvard, Ladd added, the financial impact of losing those students would be 'much more severe, short term and long term.' 'If Chinese students had to leave right now, [the universities they attend] would be hurt financially, including Harvard, because the tuition would stop, at least for the fall,' Ladd said, and the losses would ripple through their local communities. 'Those students spend money,' from buying goods and services to renting apartments. Take Amherst, home to the flagship campus of the University of Massachusetts, with more than may pay full tuition, said Amherst town manager Paul Bockelman, 'not that that matters to us.' What does matter: 'They're often renting units and going out to dinner and participating in cultural activities. They have a major economic impact.' Advertisement That impact is especially felt during summer, 'when most of the campuses vacate,' said Bockelman. 'A lot of the international students are here 12 months a year, and they're helping to sustain our local economy during the slower times.' Now, much is up in the air. On Thursday, a federal judge 'At the very least, this will mean delays,' said Berger. 'Overall, this will add to the chilling effect on attracting international students to US higher education programs.' Mary Churchill, a professor of higher education at Boston University, said roughly 90 percent of deferrals in a typical year are from students with visa troubles, and she expects that number to increase with the Trump administration's posturing. 'When students can't get their visa before the fall starts, many will request a deferral,' Churchill said. ' 'Can I come in January instead?' ... You will basically have thousands of people not moving here and living here.' Renata Nyul, a spokesperson for Northeastern University, said the college is setting up 'contingency plans for those who might experience disruptions to their learning.' Suffolk University is providing housing this summer for international students who don't want to risk leaving the country, including some of its 50 Chinese students, spokesperson Greg Gatlin said. MIT said it is 'fighting to ensure the 'visa vetting process ... is not implemented in a way that drives away the very talent that helps ensure our nation's competitiveness and prosperity,' according to a statement. Advertisement Mount Holyoke College takes prides in a This fall Mount Holyoke is expecting about 140 international first-years, and more than one third have their visas already, 'so that's a good thing,' said Kavita Khory, a professor of politics and director of the McCulloch Center for Global Initiatives. With all the confusion around visas, however, 'we're creating a significant level of skepticism and doubt about our own documents: 'I have a visa, but will I actually be able to come in?' ' One 21-year-old Chinese student at Mount Holyoke, who is afraid of her visa being revoked and asked not to be named, is staying in South Hadley for the summer. If it were revoked, she would immediately get letters of recommendation and apply to schools in Europe or Hong Kong. And, if that didn't pan out, she'd likely take a few gap years 'and wait it out until the end of this administration and work in China meanwhile,' she said. 'It would definitely be emotionally devastating, though.' Brooke Hauser can be reached at

Inside view on Everton overhaul from one of Friedkin Group's first signings
One of the first signings of the new dawn ushered in at Everton has opened up on the positivity around Finch Farm. The takeover by The Friedkin Group (TFG) was completed in December and has already sparked changes on and off the pitch. Perhaps the most visible has been the intent to support Everton Women, with manager Brian Sorensen backed heavily in the January transfer window. With his counterpart David Moyes set to embark on an overhaul of the men's squad this summer, Wales international Hayley Ladd said the Blues 'feels like a great place to be'. The 31-year-old was signed from Manchester United in a deal that brought a wealth of experience to Sorensen's ranks. READ MORE: Everton confirm plan and prices for supporters to purchase Goodison Park seat READ MORE: Everton handed mixed Richarlison transfer verdict as return rumours build Ladd's career has taken in, among others, stints at Arsenal, Finnish side Kokkola Futis 10 and Birmingham City before the move to Manchester. After winning player of the season in her first campaign at United, Ladd became part of the dressing room leadership group and was part of last season's FA Cup winning squad. Her five-and-a-half-years at the club came to an end in January, with Ladd seeking more minutes ahead of the Euros this summer. Speaking to the ECHO, she said: 'I looked at a number of options and Everton was one that really stood out to me. I think it was nice to see a team that wants to play and kind of wants to dominate the ball and play exciting football, something that I enjoy doing myself as a player. 'There was good energy around the club at that time. I think In my meeting with Brian, he said he was hoping to sign other players as well and you really had a sense that it was a really exciting time to join the club, with the new owners. It feels like a great place to be and we've got good momentum.' Ladd said she had been impressed by the project that is building on Merseyside, where results have picked up since the new year. The transfer window, which also saw the arrival of the likes of France international Kelly Gago and Norway captain Maren Mjelde, was a statement of intent that has lifted standards in the squad and provided early evidence of TFG's ambition. Another positive sign was initial meetings with TFG representatives in which they showcased their ambition and respect, something that is not always apparent - Wolves Women, for instance, are now set to meet with club chiefs after narrowly finishing second in the northern section of the second tier. It has emerged the club did not apply for a licence for the top flight, meaning promotion would have been rejected even if it had been won on the pitch. Of the conversations between TFG and the squad, Ladd said: 'Even though that's probably the minimum, it's something in the women's game that we've not been used to. So even that starting place was impressive and something that hopefully shows the intent. We've seen small changes on the ground but obviously the fact that six of us signed in January shows a lot of intent in itself. It kind of just builds the excitement of being here at this time and under their ownership.' At the first club in their portfolio, Italian giants Roma, TFG backed both senior teams. A first league title was secured for Roma Women in 2022/23 and that was followed by an historic domestic double last season. Everton Women will have a difficult task to achieve similar feats. Chelsea, who were crowned Women's Super League champions on Wednesday, are 34 points ahead of the Blues, who are eighth in the 12-team league with two matches to play. Second-placed Arsenal, meanwhile, will meet Barcelona in the Champions League final after a thumping win in Lyon at the weekend. But for Ladd, who recently reached 100 international caps and is hoping to tap into her experience to help guide the squad to better things, there is an opportunity for Everton to start closing the gap to the dominant sides. She said: 'I don't think there's any reason why we shouldn't be really considering ourselves as a really top team within this league. Obviously, that's a really competitive landscape. We know that every other team is investing so heavily and there's such an exciting place to be within the WSL. 'There's great investment, great interest commercially as well, so who knows where the league can grow, but I think the values of Everton Football Club are clear and I think that really anchors the club and really makes sure that every game there's a really strong performance, that there's a really strong culture… it's an exciting place to be with hopefully more investment, more opportunities.' A positive summer will be crucial to progress next season and the foundations have already been laid with TFG backing the work of Sorensen and his assistant Stephen Neligan with new contracts. There is important business ahead of then, though, with the Merseyside derby at Anfield on Sunday. The Blues head into the trip to their fierce rivals fresh from the shock of a late comeback defeat to Brighton & Hove Albionbut have not suffered a league defeat to Liverpool since 2019. The opportunity to play in such a renowned fixture was another factor in Ladd's move to Everton and she said she was looking forward to being part of such an illustrious fixture. Adding that she thrives off the intensity of games like this, she said: 'Even having watched from other teams, you can see the Merseyside derby is huge, in the men's and women's game. I think we've kind of adopted that rivalry in the women's game and I really feel that. Having come here, I can feel that from the inside as well. 'We've got a culture here that we want to go into every game and give it our all and definitely, even though it's coming to the end of the season, these games are no different, especially a derby.'

Seafood industry looks to capitalize on New England's invasive green crab
Duxbury, Massachusetts — Jeff Ladd grew up fishing the marshes of Duxbury, Massachusetts, with his father and grandfather. But just below the surface, the iconic New England fishery is changing fast, as warming waters reshape the ecosystem. Among those changes is the proliferation of green crab, a troublesome import from Europe and one of the world's most invasive species. "They're like cockroaches of the sea, basically," Ladd told CBS News. "You can't kill these things. I mean, we've heard stories of them coming back from a frozen state and crawling around restaurants." With few natural predators off the mainland U.S. and Alaska, cold winter water was the only thing keeping their population in check. But climate change is altering that equation, especially in places like New England where coastal waters are warming faster than almost anywhere on earth, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, especially in winter, fueling a green crab boom. "There's millions of green crab here in the bay, so it's had an impact on the clamming industry," Ladd said of Duxbury Bay. These crabs are voracious. They devour native crabs, clams and even young lobsters. So, Ladd is doing what most never imagined — fishing for a species no one wanted. One April day, his haul consisted of two 50-pound bags of green crab. He explains that it's a pretty good haul so early in the season. During peak season, he can catch about 2,000 pounds per day. A big question though is whether the public can ben convinced to eat them. "The idea here is to get some restaurants to use it, or some food manufacturing companies to use it as a flavoring in order to utilize a lot of them, and then and bring more money to the fisheries," said Sharon St. Ours, whose family has been in the seafood industry since 1979 through St. Ours & Company, which makes seafood broths. After seeing the damage green crabs were doing, she wanted to find a way to make them useful. "I thought, well, we already make a seafood broth powder, I wonder if it would make a good seafood broth," St. Ours said. Last year, she turned 5,000 pounds of crab into 1,000 gallons of broth, which was sold to commercial kitchens. She believes that with a little awareness, and a few taste tests, demand could start to boil over. "It definitely has a delicious flavor, and I hope people don't think of it as something that, you know, they'll try on a dare," St. Ours said. If demand grows, Ladd and St. Ours say prices might follow, creating incentives to fish more and ease pressure on the local ecosystem. With how quickly a green crab can reproduce, over 185,000 eggs a year, there's plenty of crabs to catch. Says Ladd: "Every one that you take out has the potential to prevent 185,000 of these things from either being in Duxbury Bay, or going out with a tide to another community."
