GMC's cleanliness contest to ensure sustainable waste management in Guwahati
1 2 Guwahati: Based on its remarkable leap in the national Swachh Survekshan rankings, from 402nd last year to 44th this year, the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) on Sunday announced a new initiative to take its cleanliness drive to the grassroots level. The civic body is set to launch a ward-level cleanliness competition, which will be modelled after the national Swachh Survekshan, with the aim of sustaining momentum and further improving waste management across the city. GMC's new commissioner, Lakshmi Priya, said each of the wards in the city will be assessed individually. This micro-level approach is designed to pinpoint specific lapses and challenges unique to each area. The findings from these assessments will then be analysed to understand the root causes of the problems, allowing the administration to implement targeted and effective measures. "If we can address these gaps, we will be able to move to the next level and significantly improve our rankings," the commissioner said. She emphasized that active public participation is crucial for the success of the new system. The cooperation of residents, in areas such as segregation of waste, ensuring timely handover to collection teams and avoiding littering, is expected to make a huge difference in maintaining cleanliness. GMC is currently working to change a system, where most households hand over mixed waste. The new goal is that only segregated waste will be collected, as mixed waste creates difficulties in processing. To facilitate proper segregation and processing, specific days will be designated for waste collection — bio-waste on certain days and non-biodegradable plastic waste on others. The commissioner also highlighted that the city's solid and liquid waste management infrastructure will be utilized to its full capacity to ensure efficient collection, segregation and processing across all wards.
