Allegations and counter-allegations flew in the Upper House of Uttar Pradesh assembly over the vandalism of a Fatehpur mausoleum, on the second day of the ongoing Monsoon session on Tuesday. (File Photo) As the proceedings started, MLC Man Singh Yadav sought details of vacant teaching posts from minister for agriculture education and research Surya Pratap Shahi, sparking a heated exchange between Lal Bihari Yadav and Kunwar Manvendra Singh. Some of the SP MLCs, including Jasmeer Ansari, raised issues related to protocols for the lawmakers and removal of inauguration stones with their names. Replying to this, Maurya said the matter will be investigated and action will be taken accordingly. Meanwhile, MLC Mukul Yadav raised the Fatehpur mausoleum issue, questioning the law and order situation in the state. 'As per latest information, around 10 murders and nine rapes are committed in the state every day. The law and order situation in the state is in shambles. Yesterday, a group of people attacked a mausoleum in Fatehpur, which was barricaded, and that too in front of the police,' Yadav said. Another SP MLC Kiranpal Kashyap also raised questions on the law and order, claiming that it is a struggle for the poor to get an FIR registered in the current regime. Lal Bihari Yadav alleged that the corruption was at its peak in police stations. However, Maurya dismissed all the allegations pertaining to the law and order. 'Since we have come to power in 2017, we have ensured stern action against criminals, and that is why the law and order situation in the state has improved. There is no denying that crimes happen, but swift action is taken against culprits,' he said. 'The previous SP regime was full of criminals and there was an atmosphere of fear in the state. All the criminals have relations with the Samajwadi Party, which is a sinking ship. The bubble of fake PDA has burst,' Maurya added. Objecting to this, Lal Bihari Yadav asked Maurya to answer the question on law and order.

The Samajwadi Party (SP) staged a walkout in the Uttar Pradesh Vidhan Parishad (Legislative Council) on the school merger issue on the first day of the Monsoon Session of the State Legislative Assembly on Monday. (HT photo) SP MLCs Mukul Yadav, Ashutosh Sinha, Balram Yadav, Rajendra Chaudhary, Jasmeer Ansari and the leader of opposition in the Vidhan Parishad Lal Bihari Yadav raised the issue. 'The level of education in the BJP regime is deteriorating day by day. The current dispensation doesn't want children of Dalits, backwards and minorities to get educated and that is why it is conspiring to keep children of these classes away from education,' alleged Lal Bihari Yadav. 'The government is planning to hand over education into private hands. The government should not look at education as a business. Instead of closing the schools, the government should focus on increasing the number of students,' he claimed. Yadav also claimed that madrasas in the state, which were built by the money contributed as Zakat (donation) by the Muslim community, had to face unnecessary audits and investigations. Meanwhile, basic education minister Sandeep Singh in his reply said school merger was being done to improve the quality of education and promote classroom learning. 'The state of education system in UP before 2017 is not hidden from anyone. Earlier, no one used to talk about increasing the number of students. There were around three crore children who were not getting education during the SP regime,' the minister said. 'School merger will also increase the grant money from the Centre which is given as per the number of students,' he added. However, soon the SP MLCs interrupted and staged a walkout. Earlier, SP MLC Man Singh Yadav raised the issue of the old pension scheme. 'If the new pension scheme is that good, why has it not been implemented for legislators and in the judiciary?' he asked. Another SP MLC Ashutosh Sinha demanded that the state government employees should be given a choice between the old and the new pension schemes. Moreover, BJP MLCs Jai Pal Singh 'Vyastha' and Anoop Kumar Gupta congratulated Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla of the Indian Air Force for being the first Indian ever to set foot on the International Space Station (ISS).

'Whether It Was Done Politically...': SP Leader's Pahalgam Remark Draws BJP Ire In Fresh Row
Last Updated: SP leader Lal Bihari Yadav has stoked a controversy as he raised questions on the alleged intelligence failure for the Pahalgam attack Pahalgam attack: Amid buzz over a possible retaliatory attack to the Pahalgam carnage, Samajwadi Party (SP) leader Lal Bihari Yadav has stoked a controversy as he raised questions on the alleged intelligence failure for the Pahalgam attack, saying that 'it is still not clear whether the terrorist attack was carried out politically or not." While speaking to the reporters in Varanasi on Monday, the Leader of Opposition in Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council traded barbs at the BJP-led central government and reportedly said, 'Whether the Pulwama terror attack of 2019 was carried out by terrorists or by our own people is still a matter of doubt. Similarly, whether the Pahalgam terror attack was carried out politically or not is also not clear yet." BJP Reacts To Yadav's Remarks The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) slammed Yadav and opposition leaders saying that he was speaking the language of Pakistan rather than his own. Party spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla said the opposition is trying to bring down the morale of the security forces by giving clean chit to Pakistan with their statements. '…After the all-party meet, one by one, Congress leaders, RJD leaders and now, SP leaders are giving clean chit to Pakistan…SP leader is saying that this (Pahalgam attack) was carried out politically. Means they have given a clean chit to Pakistan, and they are trying to bring down the morale of the security forces. SP's Ram Gopal Yadav had once said that the Pulwama attack was carried out for votes….INDI alliance and Pakistan are like two different bodies and one soul…" Following the attack, several opposition leaders have made provocative statements. Among them are Ajay Rai, the Uttar Pradesh Congress chief, and Charanjeet Singh Channi, former Punjab Chief Minister and Member of Parliament. After the attack, the Modi government had called an all-party meeting to brief political parties on the security situation in Kashmir and the actions taken against Pakistan. All political parties, including Congress, assured the government of their support for any action deemed necessary against Pakistan. Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge echoed similar sentiments, urging restraint within the party. Party senior leader Jairam Ramesh had issued a notification that no one should speak out of turn on such matters. However, controversy arose when the official Congress handle depicted PM Modi in a headless position, labeling him as 'Gaayab." Despite widespread criticism, it took Congress nearly 24 hours to delete the post. What Happened In Pahalgam? In one of the biggest attacks in Jammu and Kashmir, Lashkar-linked terrorists opened fire on a group of tourists in Pahalgam on Tuesday, April 22, killing at least 26 people, including foreign tourists, and injuring many others. The Resistance Front (TRF), a Lashkar offshoot, claimed responsibility for the attack, although it later backtracked after massive global outrage. After the attack, the diplomatic ties between India and Pakistan were downgraded with New Delhi announcing several punitive measures, including suspension of Indus Water Treaty, cutting Islamabad Mission strength, closing its airspace for Pakistani airlines and expulsion of its military attaches. In response, Pakistan undertook tit-for-tat measures and suspended the Shimla Agreement. (With inputs from agencies) First Published: May 06, 2025, 11:37 IST
