Manchester United under-21 match abandoned after injury to Sékou Koné

Manchester United Under-21s' National League Cup tie at Tamworth was abandoned because of an injury to the midfielder Sékou Koné. The Group A game at the Lamb Ground on Wednesday night was suspended after Koné went down as a result of a clash of heads as he helped to defend a corner. Koné was treated on the pitch for around 15 minutes and after the half-time whistle had been blown, the 19-year-old Mali youth international was carried off on a stretcher with a mask placed on his face. It was later announced that the game had been abandoned with the score at 0-0. Manchester Evening News reported that a replacement ambulance was needed and the delay forced the fixture to be called off. United issued an update on Koné's condition, saying in a statement: 'We can confirm Sékou is conscious, stable and communicating with United's medical team. He has been taken to hospital, as a precaution, for further checks.' A statement on Tamworth's official X account said: 'Due to the medical situation, we are forced to abandon tonight's fixture, details will be revealed in due course. 'We would like to wish safe travels to all the Man United fans, staff and players. We especially wish Sékou Koné a speedy recovery.'

Manchester United U21s match abandoned after Sekou Kone head injury

Manchester United's under-21 team had their National League Cup tie abandoned at half-time after a serious injury to Sékou Koné. Koné, 19, has trained with Ruben Amorim's first-team squad last year and was playing for the club's feeder team against non-League Tamworth when he was injured while defending a corner in the first half. He was taken straight away from the Lamb Ground in an ambulance for treatment, with referee Ross Martin then calling off the game at half-time. It was reported that Koné stood up before he was told by medics to return to the ground before getting carried off on a stretcher. In a statement issued on Wednesday night, a Manchester United spokesperson said: 'Sékou Koné is conscious, stable and communicating with United's medical team. He has been taken to hospital as a precaution for further checks.' He was sent to the prestigious Maurice Revello under-20 tournament this summer for international experience. But he has also been around Amorim's squad last season when he looked to utilise youngsters, although his United appearances have come for the under-21s. It was revealed earlier in the summer that United player-coach Tommy Rowe was taking French lessons to help Koné settle in England during his first years in the country. 'Tommy has been brilliant with him,' said under-21s coach Travis Binnion. 'He must have been on holiday to the south of France with how his French is coming on. He will sit in Sékou's English lessons just so he can pick it up. 'They do analysis and translate it through the language tutor. 'Sekou has a long way to go. He can get through three games in a week now for us, but he wouldn't be able to do that at first-team level because he's not quite there yet. His decision-making will make that easier for him, physically. It is a long-term project with him, but his ability is there for all to see.'
