Rhys McCabe resigns as Airdrie player/boss

The Diamonds are on the hunt for a new manager Rhys McCabe has sensationally quit Airdrieonians, Lanarkshire Live Sport understands. ‌ The Diamonds do not play this weekend due to the last 16 of the Premier Sports Cup taking place and it is understood the Monklands men are now on the lookout for a new gaffer ahead of next week's Championship clash at home to Queen's Park. ‌ An Airdrie insider has revealed McCabe handed in his resignation this morning. ‌ It is understood McCabe has become increasingly frustrated by the lack of a new striker in the squad. The Diamonds have let a number of key players go this summer, including star striker Ben Wilson for a fee around £200,000, but that hasn't been reinvested in the playing squad. McCabe took the reins in 2022 when he replaced Ian Murray at the helm, becoming the youngest manager in the SPFL in the process at the age of 29. He led the club to promotion from League One and also guided them to the SPFL Trust Trophy win in 2024 against The New Saints. Last season, McCabe's men went on a miserable run and found themselves bottom of the Championship for the majority of the campaign. They were saved from automatic relegation by Hamilton Accies' 15-point deduction and managed to stay up after winning the Championship play-offs. This season started with a battling 2-2 draw at home to Ross County, while the Diamonds last week fell to a 2-0 defeat at Dunfermline in what was his last game in charge.

Motherwell in Aston Oxborough injury sweat after training camp setback

The Steelmen's No.1 has suffered an injury at the club's training camp this week Motherwell face a sweat over the fitness of goalkeeper Aston Oxborough after he picked up an injury at the club's training camp in the Netherlands. The 27-year-old Englishman missed a chunk of last season with a thumb injury, which saw him fail to feature for the Steelmen between January and May. ‌ And Lanarkshire Live Sport understands the shot-stopper has suffered an injury which has the potential to rule him out for four to six weeks. He is due to be assessed by the Steelmen's medical team. ‌ At worst, that would mean Oxborough would miss the entirety of the club's Premier Sports League Cup campaign in July and possibly the Premiership opener at home to Rangers on August 2, leaving fellow Englishman Calum Ward, who joined in January, and Matty Connelly as the club's remaining shot-stoppers. Connelly was due to return on loan to East Kilbride in the coming days but news of Oxborough's injury will delay or thwart that move entirely. The Steelmen are due to play their first pre-season friendly on Tuesday when they face FC Twente.

Hamilton Accies set to complete treble swoop as side land first summer signings

John Rankin is set to add to his squad as a trio head to Broadwood Hamilton Accies are set to complete a treble signing swoop as boss John Rankin bolsters his squad for a League One title tilt. Defender Ricki Lamie, former Stenhousemuir forward Matty Yates and former Dunfermline defender Aaron Comrie have all agreed terms with teh club, Lanarkshire Live Sport understands. ‌ Rankin brought Lamie to the club on loan from Ross County last season, making 11 appearances and netting once in a 2-1 win over Queen's Park during the second half of the season, and Lanarkshire Live Sport understands the club have agreed terms with the former Motherwell man to make his move permanent having left the Staggies this summer. ‌ Meanwhile, it is also understood Accies have swooped to sign Yates after his contract expired with the Warriors last month. The 23-year-old scored seven goals in 45 appearances for the Ochilview men in League One last season and Rankin is understood to have agreed terms to bring the striker to Broadwood this summer. Full-back Comrie has also agreed to join Accies for the 2025/26 campaign after leaving the Pars last month. The 28-year-old made 43 appearances last term, chipping in with three goals. Earlier this week, Rankin told Lanarkshire Live Sport their move to Broadwwod being approved by the SPFL had provided some much-needed certainty about the club's future and hoped it would pave the way for him to bring in new players. He said: "We definitely have players to add. We've spent a lot of time on recruitment this summer, speaking to people. ‌ "We know it is a bit different, playing in the league below. It is not ideal and it hasn't been ideal with the stadium. "The first question on people's lips has been: 'Where are you going to play?' "So I think the fact we are now able to train and play at Broadwood now, brings a sense of happiness and there is a buzz about it. "The players I have been speaking to now know where we will play and train, it takes that uncertainty away and gives us the chance to go and get the right bodies in now. We want to make the squad stronger and be as strong as possible coming out of the window."

Hamilton Accies Broadwood move still to be approved, SPFL confirms

Accies are bidding to play home games in Cumbernauld next season by the SPFL are yet to give it the green light Hamilton Accies' proposed move to Broadwood Stadium in Cumbernauld is yet to be ratified by the SPFL, Lanarkshire Live Sport can reveal. The League One club are seeking to complete the move to a new temporary home after they failed to come to an agreement to purchase New Douglas Park from its current owner Colin McGowan last season. It is a decision which has sparked anger and concern amid large sections of the Accies support and local businesses in the town. ‌ Last month, we revealed that Accies would be unable to play any pre-season games of League Cup matches at Broadwood due to pitch resurfacing works taking place. The new pitch is set to be relayed in time for the start of the new league camapign, which kicks-off on Saturday, August 2. ‌ And that has forced Accies to schedule their 'home' Premier Sports League Cup games with Hearts on July 15 and Dumbarton on July 26 at K-Park in East Kilbride. The SPFL are due to release the fixtures for the 2025/26 league campaign on Friday, June 20, by which time Hamilton's home ground would need to be confirmed. It is understood Hamilton Accies submitted a tenancy agreement in April but amendments have since had to be made. The SPFL has yet to approve Broadwood as their home ground for next season and they remain in discussions with the club and landlords North Lanarkshire Council regarding this. An SPFL spokesperson told Lanarkshire Live Sport: 'The SPFL remains in dialogue with Hamilton Academical FC over their proposed temporary move to Broadwood Stadium. "East Kilbride's K-Park has been confirmed as Hamilton Academical's venue for home matches during the Premier Sports Cup group stage – but, to date, no venue has been confirmed for the club's other SPFL home fixtures for season 2025/26.' ‌ The letter claimed: 'The SPFL stated if New Douglas Park is off the table, and the supporters don't approve Broadwood, there is the very real possibility that they will kick our club out of the leagues. 'If we don't have a 'home' stadium approved by the SPFL without further delay (we've already missed the deadline), we won't meet their Membership Criteria for next season and it'll go to a vote of the other 41 SPFL members." The SPFL did not comment on our enquiry regarding this.
