We all know the dangers of poor sleep. Here's what it does to your skin

This story is part of the June 1 edition of Sunday Life. See all 14 stories. It's well known that an unsettled night's sleep can lead to lacklustre skin. When you sleep, skin goes into repair mode, so if your sleep patterns are erratic it will show on your face the next day. Bad sleep affects collagen production, which is essential for maintaining skin hydration and elasticity, and a lack of sleep can cause inflammation and a compromised skin barrier. Face-planting into your pillow can also leave creases on your skin. 'Bad sleep is often due to stress, which has a significant impact on skin, and chronic sleep restriction is much worse than a short-term sleep issue,' says Sydney dermatologist Dr Ritu Gupta. She says poor sleep leads to collagen breaking down and decreased skin-barrier function, which means increased susceptibility to eczema, irritation and infection. 'Collagen breakdown accelerates the ageing process, and a lack of sleep also decreases the lipids in the skin, which leads to it sagging.' So how much sleep is enough? The general rule of thumb is eight hours. Here are a few tips to help your skin get a good night's sleep. Elevate your head by sleeping on two pillows, ideally in silk pillowcases such as those from Slip ($115). Elevation decreases facial swelling and improves blood flow and lymphatic drainage, says Gupta. 'Some extension of the neck means that finally our 'tech necks' can have a much-needed rest. Having your neck constantly flexed by looking at a phone screen creates horizontal lines. Sleeping slightly elevated means a reprieve from that position.' Loading If you're able to sleep on your back, this helps reduce the chest and face wrinkles that can occur if you are a side or tummy sleeper. Try an Orthopaedic cervical pillow ($80, from Ergonomist) that cradles your neck, keeping it properly aligned with your head and shoulders. This helps reduce pressure on the neck muscles. Night creams, with their rich, hydrating ingredients to plump, firm and brighten, are bedtime essentials. An oldie but goodie is Estée Lauder Advanced Night Repair ($199) with tripeptide-32, hyaluronic acid and polyglutamic acid. Peptides serve as messengers between skin cells to encourage them to produce more collagen, accelerating wound healing and protecting the skin barrier. For more nighttime magic, we like Neutrogena Rapid Wrinkle Repair Retinol Pro+ Night Cream ($33). And for eyes, try Medik8 Advanced Night Eye ($96), which has great de-puffing powers, boosts radiance and targets dark circles. (As an added bonus, this cream also works like a charm under make-up.) For lips, we love Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask ($25).

Zoe Saldana is a 'sucker' for lip plumpers

Zoe Saldana is a "sucker" for lip plumpers. The Hollywood actress has confessed she loves products which claim to pump up your pout and she usually keeps at least "four or five" lip glosses in her hand bag at all times. When asked to list the contents of her purse, she told The Hollywood Reporter: "[There's] at least four or five lip glosses. In the early 2000s and I was introduced to lip plumpers. I am a sucker for them. "I love anything that makes my lips feel tingly! And moisturizer. California can be a really dry place. We love the sun, but there's the perils of sunny California means that your lips are sometimes on the dry side. I like to have a variation of a moisturizer." Zoe previously revealed one of her favourite lip products is the Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask. In a video filmed for Vogue India, she explained: "My lips are always chapped so right now I'm using a really good lip balm." In the clip, Zoe showed the contents of her purse and revealed her must-have perfume is Carnal Flower by Dominique Ropion and she keeps it with her by carrying sample sprays wherever she goes. Zoe explained: "Carnal Flower has been my scent for many, many years and because I can't be carrying a big vase of it, I tend to just have these little samples in all of my bags and all of my coats because I always think I stink." She also revealed she carries a tube of hand cream with her at all times as well as a bottle of hair oil, blaming the hot California weather for drying out her tresses. Zoe also told fans she carries two concealer products and two eye creams with her because her eyes can sometimes be "a little dry", adding: "That is very bothersome so I have the night [eye cream] and the day cream".

'I ditched my Laneige lip balm for a £4 alternative - one thing stuck with me'

I've loved my Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask for a while now and double it up as a lip balm, but a cheaper Boots alternative caught my eye and after trying it, this one thing stuck with me When I first saw the Laneige Sleeping Lip Mask trending on social media, I knew I had to have one. The small tub, the moisture and gloss it offered - it was marketed as a high quality lip balm and one I added to my shopping haul immediately. I've been careful not to use too much and have managed to make my Sleeping Lip Mask last well over six months, only using it for the special evenings when I fancy a pamper session before bed or need long-lasting hydration throughout the day. But I've found myself scraping the sides, trying to get the last dregs of the product which seems to have finally run out. After frantically browsing a Boots store in an attempt to find a top-up, I came across a lip balm that looked incredibly similar. It was none other than Boots' Berry Lip Sleep Mask. At just £4.50, it felt wrong not to buy it and put it to the test to find out whether it matched as a cheaper alternative to the viral Laneige version. Lanegie Lip Sleeping Mask vs Boots Lip Sleep Mask For those who missed the hype, the Laneige lip masks are available in eight different flavours - Taro Bubble Tea, Matcha Bubble Tea, Peach Iced Tea, Berry (Original), Gummy Bear, Sweet Candy, Vanilla and Grapefruit. They even come in adorable mini sizes for when you're travelling and have to adhere to the often annoying 100ml rule. It offers an "ultra-nourishing formula that encourages soft, luscious lips" and is crafted with shea butter and hyaluronic acid - making it a popular buy. You can find them in Sephora, Cult Beauty, Space NK, Amazon and Boots. On the other hand, Boots' Berry Lip Sleep Mask landed in stores back in January, but has since been difficult to find as stocks sell fast. This product also has shea butter, just like Laneige, but also has moisture-rich ingredient coconut oil, for deep hydration. My review of the Boots Berry Lip Sleep Mask Although this should be used as a sleep lip mask, I wanted to see how my lips would fare throughout the day, so used the Boots Berry Lip Mask first thing in the morning and hoped that it would keep my lips nourished during my busy work day. I used the mini spatula provided to take a scoop of the product and applied to my lips, immediately realising that a little bit goes a long way. I rubbed my lips together and loved how easily it melted into my lips, however, after smacking them together, I felt quite a bit of stickiness which particularly irked me. But once I removed the excess product, this went away and I was left with glossy, moisturised lips. I only reapplied lip balm later than afternoon, so can confidently say this product lasted a good six hours before reapplications. A huge win in my books. Pros and cons of the Boots Berry Lip Sleep Mask Pros Affordable at only £4.50 a pop Has a stronger berry scent in comparison to Lanegie's version A little bit goes a long way Comes with a mini spatula to apply the product Cons Does leave a sticky residue, even when rubbed into lips Berry scent can be overpowering
