United Church calls on provincial government, 'while we worship together, trans bodies are being broken'
Clergy members donned rainbow vestments alongside their classic white collars Friday morning, as hundreds of United Church members gathered in downtown Calgary to issue a formal apology to the LBGTQ+ community. Article content Members from all across Canada packed the pews, leaned on bannisters, and crowded upper balconies. A pride flag hung on a pole above the congregation. Article content Article content Article content The apology, several years in the making, came in the form of a full church service. Leaders of the church spoke formally, sang their acceptance in call and response with the crowd, read from scripture in four different languages, and prayed for changes in the hearts of Alberta lawmakers. Article content Article content The formal apology was a segment of the United Church's General Council, an event inviting members of the church from across Canada to come together every three years. Commissioners from the 16 regional councils are brought to vote on important church matters: budgets, official stances on Palestine, and formal apologies like this one. Article content United Church Moderator Rev. Carmen Lansdowne spoke the officially composed apology, one of her last acts in the position before a new moderator is elected this weekend. Article content Article content 'We, the United Church of Canada, express our deepest apologies to all those, who have experienced homophobia, transphobia, and biphobia within the United Church of Canada,' Lansdowne said. Article content 'We are sorry,' replied the congregation, in unison. Article content Lansdowne went on to describe overt examples of this discrimination, 'such as loss of income, harassment, being denied access to church leadership, and threats to personal safety.' She further made clear that complacency in the face of discrimination was just as relevant as those more explicit examples. Article content The service was conducted in a variety of different languages, without pausing to translate back into one or the other. Sermons and speeches alternated between English and French. Two readings of scripture were spoken solely in Japanese. The last song of the service, titled Bambalela, alternated between English, French, and Zulu. Article content One piece of scripture was read entirely though sign language, displayed to the crowd through a slideshow on televisions, while the room was otherwise quiet. Article content The formal apology had been in progress for several years. United Church General Secretary Rev. Michael Blair said that the discussion first began in 2009. A decade later, a report 'indicated that a formal apology be made,' he said. 'In 2023, the general council committed to offering an apology to the 2S and LGBTQIA+ community.' Article content After the composed apology, the service culminated with several prayers. The Lord's Prayer, prayers espousing heartbreak and sorrow 'for what we never had, and all that our lives and the church could have been,' and prayers directly aimed at the Alberta provincial government. Article content 'We pray for a healing and changing of hearts of those in power, who would enact laws here in Alberta to deny the gender affirming care, that puts trans youth at risk,' the speaker said. Article content Article content Last year, the Alberta government passed legislation that sought to ban doctors from providing treatment such as puberty blockers and hormone therapy to those under the age of 16 and enacted a total ban on gender-reassignment surgery for minors in the province. Article content In June, an injunction was granted against the rule changes around health care in the province. On July 25, the government appealed that injunction. Article content 'We pray for freedom for school libraries and teachers to provide the books for children in their care without government interference,' they said. 'We pray for the freedom for trans girls to play the sport of their choice.

Windsor police not responsible to pay for new helicopter
An RCMP Sikorsky UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter lands at the Canada Border Services Agency Lansdowne Port of Entry in Lansdowne, Ont., on Wednesday, Feb. 12, 2025 (THE CANADIAN PRESS/Spencer Colby Windsor police will be off the hook for the cost of a new helicopter for the service. The update was provided during Thursday's Windsor Police Services Board Meeting. A letter from the Ministry of the Solicitor General, dated back to early June, states that the service would not be responsible for any of the costs associated with the procurement and operation of the helicopter. The announcement that Windsor would be receiving the new helicopter was made in mid-May when the 2025 Ontario Budget was released. The budget included $57 million for two new H-135 helicopters to support Niagara Regional Police and Windsor police with increased patrols, security, and enforcement at key entry points at the U.S. border. The letter from the Solicitor General also states that the helicopter will be owned and operated by the OPP. Its operation in the Windsor area would include five Tactical Flight Officers from the Windsor Police Service and all associated costs will be funded by the province. Board chair and Ward 6 councillor, Jo-Anne Gignac, said it's good news to see. 'It's been made very clear that the province is in partnership with us, willing to supply this tool, and all of the ancillary costs that go with it. So, off we go.' Windsor police service letter A portion of the letter written by the Ministry of the Solicitor General dated back to early June stating that Windsor Police would not be responsible for any of the costs associated with the procurement and operation of the helicopter. July 24, 2025. (Windsor Police Service website) She said those in the helicopter will be staffed locally. 'Five police officers would be utilized in the use of that particular resource, so it's important to have a local knowledge-based person in a helicopter like that in order to carry out the functions. So, 100 per cent covered by the province of Ontario.' Gignac said this helicopter will be a great tool. 'Missing persons, vehicle traffic, a number of things. But as we get closer to the date of the delivery of the item, I'm sure that we're going to get a more comprehensive list of exactly what the province is expecting of us,' she said. She added that at this time, she's not sure where the pilot for the helicopter would be contracted from. As reported at the end of May, the helicopter is slated to be in Windsor by 2027. - Written by Meagan Delaurier/AM800 News.

Horrific slew of injuries suffered by baby girl born AFTER her mother was murdered
A newborn girl who survived after her mother was tragically shot to death by her boyfriend in Pennsylvania is suffering from devastating injuries that may leave her unable to ever walk. Tanyiah Bell, 19, of Lansdowne, was eight months pregnant when she was fatally shot by her 19-year-old live-in boyfriend, Kaiheem Jerelle Williams, on November 14, 2024, according to the Lansdowne Police Department. Declared dead at the scene, Tanyiah was rushed to the hospital, where her 4-pound baby was delivered alive. Now, eight months later, 19-pound Tanyiah Miracle Bell is defying the odds, despite suffering a severe brain injury. 'She may never be able to walk. She can't blink. She can't smile,' Tylicia Bell, Tanyiah's mother, tearfully told 6abc. 'She can't react to us, but the doctors did say she has perfect eyes and perfect ears, so I know she sees the love, hears the love.' When officers responded to reports of a gunshot victim at Tanyiah's apartment on the 200 block of North Wycombe Avenue that fateful November night, they rushed her to the hospital in a desperate attempt to save her unborn child. Miracle was delivered just five minutes after arrival, and doctors were able to save her. Tanyiah Bell, 19, was eight months pregnant when she was fatally shot by her 19-year-old live-in boyfriend, Kaiheem Jerelle Williams, on November 14, 2024 'When they pulled her out, she was gray,' Tylicia told 6abc. 'They did CPR on her for 25 minutes and they were able to get a heartbeat.' Miracle was born with a severe brain injury caused by oxygen deprivation. She also has cerebral palsy, suffers frequent seizures and needed a tracheostomy tube to assist with her breathing, according to the outlet. 'She's a true fighter,' Tylicia told 6abc. 'Everything she's been through, we've gotten through. 'She's been fighting through it, and we've been right by her side every step of her way.' Miracle has been receiving care at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia and is currently battling an infection - the latest obstacle in a long fight for survival. Still, her loving grandmother holds on to hope that in two months, she'll finally be able bring her daughter's baby girl home - and fulfill the dreams Tanyiah had for her. 'I wish my daughter was here to see this, but I know she's watching over us and is like, "Mom, you got this,"' Tylicia told 6abc. 'She looks just like her,' the grandmother added. 'I feel like I'm raising my daughter all over again.' Once home, Miracle will require around-the-clock care, including specialized equipment, a larger vehicle and modifications to the home - most of which is not covered by insurance, according to Tylicia Facing mounting medical expenses, Miracle's grandmother launched a GoFundMe campaign to help support the cost of her new life as a full-time caregiver. 'As her grandmother and now full-time caregiver, I've had to step into a role I never imagined - becoming her nurse, advocate, and voice,' Tylicia wrote in the description. 'I haven't been able to return to work since the tragedy, and I am doing everything I can as the only surviving grandparent. But I cannot do this alone.' Funds are being raised to cover the cost of a larger vehicle to safely transport Miracle and her medical equipment, adaptive gear like high chairs and positioning tools, home renovations for safety and comfort, and daily essentials and therapy. 'Thank you for helping us honor Tanyiah's memory by fighting for her daughter's life,' she wrote. 'May her mommy continue to rest in peace, and may Miracle continue to shine as the blessing she truly is.' 'She is truly a blessing, a fighter, and a living testimony.' Williams - who was identified as the 911 caller after fatally gunning down Tanyiah (pictured) - was arrested and charged with murder and attempted murder and is due back in court on July 22 As of Wednesday morning, the campaign had raised $3,165 toward Tylicia's $5,500 goal. Williams - who was identified as the 911 caller after fatally gunning down Tanyiah, according to police - was arrested and charged with murder and attempted murder, 6abc reported. He is due back in court on July 22.
