Victoria Beckham and Keira Knightley are proof – in Paris, black is always the new black

No sooner had the Oscars red carpet been rolled up than the Hollywood elite were once again boarding private jets to fly across the Atlantic for the next round of style moments at Paris Fashion Week. Proceedings kicked off with Le Grand Dîner du Louvre – a fundraiser that looks set to become the French answer to New York's Met Gala, coinciding with the museum's new exhibition, Louvre Couture: Art and Fashion – Statement Pieces. It's an invitation which called for some serious style, one that was met by the vast majority of guests with the French woman's favourite fall-back: black. There was nothing boring about these gowns, however, from Keira Knightley's intricately embroidered, strapless peplum gown by Chanel (complete with a matching black clutch and heels) to Rosie Huntington-Whiteley's full-on sequinned, corseted number by Balenciaga, to Victoria Beckham 's slinky gown of her own design. Tellingly, anyone who was actually French was also flying the flag for monochrome. Justine Triet, the film director best known for Anatomy of a Fall, wore her black satin, barrel-legged suit with nothing more than a slash of red lipstick – if any outfit were a byword for Gallic cool, it would be this. Caroline de Maigret, the French model, also went for a black trouser suit, although hers boasted a subtle, silvery shimmer which perfectly complemented the hardware on her Chanel bag. And Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu – practically the nation's patron saint of midlife style – turned up not just in a black gown, but with black opera gloves, heels, sunglasses and a clutch to match. 'I have always been impressed by the elegance of French women and how effortless they look,' says Tumisola Ladega-Hewitt, the founder of clothing brand Ladéga, which practically majors in monochrome. 'Black is such a refined shade. It's a timeless, classic colour: quiet, yet bold. As far as I'm concerned, an all-black silhouette is incredibly understated, yet powerful and artistic. It's a versatile, sophisticated and a fail-safe option for any time of year.' Not for nothing did the most famous of French designers, Coco Chanel, once say: 'I imposed black; it's still going strong today, for black wipes out everything else around.' Credited with inventing the little black dress in 1926, Chanel democratised the idea of an easy-to-wear, elegant basic – as Vogue called it that same year, 'a uniform for people of taste'. Since then, black has been integral to the language of the brand, which regularly casts everything from its classic skirt suits to its most dramatic gowns in monochrome hues. Now, all-black outfits are synonymous with French style leaders, from Carine Roitfeld and Emmanuelle Alt, to Ines de la Fressange and the late Françoise Hardy. Many shy away from black in the fear that it can be draining, especially on anyone over the age of 25. However, pairing different textures within the same outfit will guard against this: just look to Michelle Yeoh, the actress, who teamed her high-shine black dress with a sumptuous fur shrug. Or follow the lead of model Eva Herzigová, who embraced the almost-black strategy, in a midnight-hued chiffon dress with a matching, glittery cape. It's significant, too, that no one who wore black at the Louvre dinner chose anything other than matching accessories – the beauty of this colour is that it looks best when it's kept consciously, even starkly, simple. Colour is fabulous and joy-bringing, but this was not the message from the Paris fashion elite last night. It was a reminder that, for this tranche of the industry at least, black is always the new black.

Paris' Version of the Met Gala Had Everything — Bleached Brows, Glam Gowns and Supermodel Powerhouses

Fashion-lovers are no doubt eagerly anticipating the arrival of the 2025 Met Gala, but for now, they can enjoy all the fabulous style coming out of the Le Grand Dîner du Louvre in Paris. On March 5, the Louvre Museum hosted a fashionable affair celebrating its first fashion exhibit, 'Louvre Couture: Art and Fashion — Statement Pieces," which boats over 100 rare pieces by 45 designers, per Marie Claire. Unofficially dubbed the Met Gala of Paris, the event brought tons of glamour from major gown moments to bold makeup and unexpected hair changes, and we've got them all here. Read ahead to find out which were the most iconic. There was no shortage of supermodel power with runway icons shining bright in their looks. Tyra Banks looked fierce as she struck a posed in front of the Louvre in an embellished Mônot coat by designer Eli Mizrahi. She paired the design with an unexpectedly short "wet sculpted" hairstyle. The former America's Top Model judge recapped her "spellbinding" night on Instagram, writing: "I was in awe. I was shook. I was like… is this even real?" Next generation stars Taylor Hill and Barbara Palvin stunned in sheer Iris Van Herpen couture gowns. Hill's featured a cutout metallic bodice and iridescent cape while Palvin's had a thigh-high slit and a wide portrait neckline. Michelle Yeoh and Gigi Hadid debuted major hair transformations. The Everything Everywhere All at Once star turned heads in a dramatic chin-length bob and equally striking bleached brows made even more edgy with the latex-like one-shoulder dress she had on. Meanwhile, the supermodel and Guest in Residence founder switched up her signature golden blonde bob for an icy silver side-swept hairdo by celebrity stylist Dimitris Giannetos. Doechii has been on a winning streak since earning her first Grammy back in February and she continued to blow our minds in this couture Valentino ball gown, which was gold, glittery and ultra-glam. The Spring 2025 design was made over 800 hours to perfect the silver embroidered accents showstopping skirt (among the other ornate details). As reported by Vogue, the rapper changed into a denim-on-denim look for a surprise performance including her songs 'Persuasive" and 'Denial Is a River." Rather than opting for a traditional gown, Paris Jackson wore a gothic 2020 couture Iris Van Herpen design with a bohemian, romantic twist. With its nearly floor-hitting sleeveless, sheer bodice and tattoo-showing halter neckline, the dress one of the best of the night. Naomi Campbell was another attendee who opted for a timeless hairstyle. The supermodel had her hair styled in a sculpted beehive half-up style with curled ends — the look even brought back side-swept bangs! Her elegant updo was complemented with a floor-sweeping hot pink coat worn with a classic black dress and a sparkly necklace. David and Victoria Beckham won the award for most stylish pair of the night dressed in coordinating monochromatic looks. The fashion designer looked sleek in a black dress with a ruched waistline and mini train, while the former athlete was as sharp as can be in a suit, bow-tie and scarf. Keira Knightley Embraces Dark Glamour in Strapless Chanel Gown for Louvre's Grand Fashion Dinner

A bevy of A-list stars and high-profile guests styled their best formal threads for Le Grand Dîner du Louvre on Tuesday in Paris. Among the stars was two-time Oscar-nominated actress and frequent Chanel collaborator Keira Knightley, who attended the event alongside her husband James Righton. Knightley looked to the runway for inspiration for her outfit for the evening's black-tie festivities. The 'Pride & Prejudice' star wore a gown courtesy of Chanel's fall 2024 couture collection. The strapless black dress was wholly evocative of dark glamour, refining the style with touches of sparkle. The dress also included a slight peplum element for a defined waist, while the full skirt added movement and layers of fabric for a voluminous effect. As for her accessories, Knightley opted for simple touches, featuring a silver choker necklace with small stars, dainty earrings and a few delicate rings. The actress' hair was styled in a bob with soft waves and a middle part. Knightley's strapless gown made its runway debut during Paris Fashion Week in June 2024. The showcase took place prior to Matthieu Blazy's appointment as the new creative director for the French luxury fashion house, succeeding Virginie Viard. 'This collection was rooted in classic Chanel codes, with streamlined tailoring, lavish embellishment and a preponderance of black,' Joelle Diderich wrote in WWD's review of the collection. 'Evening options included a trio of frothy black ballerina dresses embellished with crystal cabochons; a trim black coat studded with 3D gold ribbons, and taffeta capes in ivory, fuchsia or black that split open to show off bare or stockinged legs,' Diderich wrote. 'There was an '80s feel to looks like a pale pink ruffled jumpsuit and the sweeping ivory bridal gown, which brought to mind Princess Diana's wedding gown designed by David and Elizabeth Emanuel.'
