No sooner had the Oscars red carpet been rolled up than the Hollywood elite were once again boarding private jets to fly across the Atlantic for the next round of style moments at Paris Fashion Week. Proceedings kicked off with Le Grand Dîner du Louvre – a fundraiser that looks set to become the French answer to New York's Met Gala, coinciding with the museum's new exhibition, Louvre Couture: Art and Fashion – Statement Pieces.
It's an invitation which called for some serious style, one that was met by the vast majority of guests with the French woman's favourite fall-back: black.
There was nothing boring about these gowns, however, from Keira Knightley's intricately embroidered, strapless peplum gown by Chanel (complete with a matching black clutch and heels) to Rosie Huntington-Whiteley's full-on sequinned, corseted number by Balenciaga, to Victoria Beckham 's slinky gown of her own design.
Tellingly, anyone who was actually French was also flying the flag for monochrome. Justine Triet, the film director best known for Anatomy of a Fall, wore her black satin, barrel-legged suit with nothing more than a slash of red lipstick – if any outfit were a byword for Gallic cool, it would be this. Caroline de Maigret, the French model, also went for a black trouser suit, although hers boasted a subtle, silvery shimmer which perfectly complemented the hardware on her Chanel bag. And Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu – practically the nation's patron saint of midlife style – turned up not just in a black gown, but with black opera gloves, heels, sunglasses and a clutch to match.
'I have always been impressed by the elegance of French women and how effortless they look,' says Tumisola Ladega-Hewitt, the founder of clothing brand Ladéga, which practically majors in monochrome. 'Black is such a refined shade. It's a timeless, classic colour: quiet, yet bold. As far as I'm concerned, an all-black silhouette is incredibly understated, yet powerful and artistic. It's a versatile, sophisticated and a fail-safe option for any time of year.'
Not for nothing did the most famous of French designers, Coco Chanel, once say: 'I imposed black; it's still going strong today, for black wipes out everything else around.' Credited with inventing the little black dress in 1926, Chanel democratised the idea of an easy-to-wear, elegant basic – as Vogue called it that same year, 'a uniform for people of taste'. Since then, black has been integral to the language of the brand, which regularly casts everything from its classic skirt suits to its most dramatic gowns in monochrome hues. Now, all-black outfits are synonymous with French style leaders, from Carine Roitfeld and Emmanuelle Alt, to Ines de la Fressange and the late Françoise Hardy.
Many shy away from black in the fear that it can be draining, especially on anyone over the age of 25. However, pairing different textures within the same outfit will guard against this: just look to Michelle Yeoh, the actress, who teamed her high-shine black dress with a sumptuous fur shrug. Or follow the lead of model Eva Herzigová, who embraced the almost-black strategy, in a midnight-hued chiffon dress with a matching, glittery cape.
It's significant, too, that no one who wore black at the Louvre dinner chose anything other than matching accessories – the beauty of this colour is that it looks best when it's kept consciously, even starkly, simple.
Colour is fabulous and joy-bringing, but this was not the message from the Paris fashion elite last night. It was a reminder that, for this tranche of the industry at least, black is always the new black.

It's been over three decades since Four Weddings and a Funeral was released on the big screen, and the Richard Curtis rom-com still holds a special place in the hearts of audiences everywhere For over thirty years, Four Weddings and a Funeral has shown that a film with a lot of heart can go a long way. Despite being one of the most beloved romantic comedies out there, and helping catapult some of its stars to new levels of fame, it was actually a really low-budget project. It cost only £3 million to make - which might sound like a lot, but in Hollywood terms is as cheap as chips - and was shot over just six weeks. ‌ But despite being a small movie, Four Weddings is still one of the British public's favourite rom-coms after all these years, and it cemented Hugh Grant as a household name in the UK, along with his girlfriend Liz Hurley. ‌ Her stunning and risque Versace dress - the barely-there piece was held together with safety pins - captured serious attention at the Four Weddings premiere, and has become an iconic moment in fashion history. The movie's producer, Duncan Kenworthy, remembered discussing what Liz might wear when going for lunch with her and Hugh the week before the premiere, "Liz said, 'I have absolutely no idea at this point'," he said, adding that "With every piece about Liz came a mention of the film, so it was great publicity. The premiere was an extraordinary event." After the film's release on March 11, 1994, even the movie's theme song - Love is All Around by Wet, Wet, Wet - found major success, and spent 15 weeks at the top of the charts. Pretty much every character in the film has become totally beloved by audiences, from the floppy-haired Charles as lead, to his quirky flatmate Scarlet, and the laugh-a-minute, over-the-top Gareth. Duncan, 73, has said that they were totally consumed by their "little film" during the two years production took and that due to issues finding finance for the film, "We were making it for a long time in our heads before we actually made it in reality". ‌ However, even though they were working on a budget, everyone around them really believed that Four Weddings would go the distance. "I remember sitting and watching the Oscars on telly with friends the year before we made Four Weddings and they all said, 'You'll be there next year' and laughed," Duncan explained. "Literally a year later, there I was, at the Oscars, with a Best Picture nomination. It was unthinkable, really. In those days there were only five nominees for best picture at the Oscars. It shows what a big impact the film made – not just with the public but within the film world, too." ‌ Despite its popularity, Four Weddings and a Funeral didn't take home Best Picture, but to be fair, they faced some pretty stiff competition that year, with other nominees in 1995 including Pulp Fiction, The Shawshank Redemption, and Forrest Gump - with the latter taking home the statue. Four Weddings did manage to score a host of BAFTAs, however, for its depiction of Hugh Grant as the slightly-hopeless Charles attending a series of landmark occasions in his loved one's lives - and falling in love with American socialite, Carrie - played by Andie MacDowell. Casting the film presented the production team with a few challenges, particularly when it came to the lead role of Charles. Whilst it might seem impossible to imagine anyone else playing him now, Richard Curtis is said to have had more than few doubts about his ability to carry the role. ‌ Over 70 people were auditioned for the role, but in the end it came down to Hugh Grant and one other choice. "It sounds odd now but the other actor in the frame was Alan Rickman, who'd really cut through in the Robin Hood movie. Mike, Richard and I simply couldn't agree which of them to cast, so we voted in secret," Duncan explained. "We were an odd number, and it came out 2 to 1 in favour of Hugh Grant. It's a cause of enormous delight to me that it was Richard who nearly ended Hugh's romcom career before it even started." ‌ Hugh Grant has also revealed that Richard Curtis definitely was not a fan of him during the auditioning process, saying "[My audition] was in front of Mike Newell, the director, who seemed to quite like me, and Richard Curtis, who seemed to want me dead. He really hated me. Apparently there was a bit of a fight between them.... and Richard didn't want me at all." The actor also revealed that before the movie's release, he thought it would be a total flop, and he said as much to his friend Sam Neil over dinner one night. Later, Hugh said about his initial impression of the rom-com "I was clearly wrong and the film changed my life. It was the beginning of a happy friendship with Richard Curtis, and I've always had the greatest respect for Mike Newell who taught me things I use to this day." Despite the rocky start to Richard's impression of Hugh, the pair went on to make two other iconic rom-coms together, Notting Hill and Love Actually, so the actor obviously convinced him eventually that he had it in him. ‌ Finding someone to play Carrie also presented some challenges, Duncan explained, and after an extensive auditioning process in the US, they offered the role to two actresses - both of whom turned it down. Back in the UK, they heard on the grapevine that established actress Andie MacDowell was in town, and quickly arranged a meeting, "We found out Andie MacDowell was staying at The Dorchester, so Mike and I arranged to meet her in the bar. As soon as we met her, Mike knew she was the one," the producer said. And it was Andie who would end up delivering probably the film's most famous - and cheesy - line after Hugh Grant's character declared his undying love for her as the pair stood in the pouring rain. "Is it still raining? I hadn't noticed," Carrie deadpans, a delivery that Duncan thinks in hindsight might have missed the mark. ‌ "Of course Carrie knows it's raining! She's drenched, he's drenched. She means it ironically,' he explained. 'If Andie had said it with a smile, no one would have mentioned it!' Four Weddings and a Funeral is packed with laughs - and at the funeral of Gareth more than a few tears - and it's popularity is such that it has even born a TV show. Created by Mindy Kaling, the show over ten episodes followed the framework of the film - but it didn't resonate with the public in the same way the film had. When it comes to the continued love for Four Weddings, and its longstanding legacy, Duncan said: "To think there's still interest in the film, all these years later, is surprising but lovely."

David Laing writes letters to people who helped take record to No. 1

Sign Up When David Laing cooked up the idea to write letters to fans of his new album, he wasn't expecting to develop writer's cramp. But when the singer songwriter's latest LP cracked the charts, he proved as good as his word – by sending handwritten epistles all over the country. His new record We, Then Me, landed at No. 1 on the UK Amazon folk chart last month, meaning Laing – who works as a chef and performs under the moniker I am David Laing – had to get his writing pad out. He said: ' I didn't just want to go on the beg asking for people to buy my record. In the past I've done stupid things like telling people I'd give them a Twix if they came to a gig. 'So I figured I'd write a thank you letter to people for buying an album, because the act of writing a letter really has become a dying art. I didn't think it was going to have an impact, but people started to pre-order the album so they could get a handwritten letter, which I couldn't believe.' © Supplied Laing has now sent letters to fans as far away as Spain, and up and own the UK. 'I didn't realise how much it cost to send letters,' said the Inverclyde songwriter, who lives in the seaside town of Gourock. 'So I've been writing a batch and actually going out and hand-delivering them as far as possible, chapping people's doors or popping them through the letterbox. Every letter has been different.' And he joked: 'At times it reminds me of sitting outside the classroom writing a punishment exercise in third- year French. It's been so time consuming, but I'm loving it. I've written loads and still have some left to write. It's hilarious how it's worked out.' Getting his thoughts down on the page is something that comes naturally to 33-year-old Laing, who has been writing songs since he was a teenager and who honed his craft with pals rehearsing in the garage of the late sculptor and musician George Wyllie, one of the most significant Scottish artists of the last 50 years. His self-run label, Lonesome Boat, is inspired by Wyllie's famous Paper Boat, which he launched to pose a question about de-industrialisation on the Clyde. The singer, who studied music with Deacon Blue's keyboard player Jim Prime and Pearlfishers' frontman Davie Scott at University of the West of Scotland, has had support slots with Emeli Sande, as well as top indie acts Admiral Fallow and King Creosote. He's due to back up Edinburgh favourite Withered Hand at a hometown gig in Greenock next month. It's a change of scene from the day job, working as a chef in Gourock's riverside Cafe Continental. He said: 'All I wanted to do was to get this album into the lower reaches of some chart somewhere. So when it landed at number 68 in the UK official downloads chart, I couldn't believe it. I was above Bryan Adams and Bruce Springsteen at one point, which was hilarious.' © Andrew Cawley Laing celebrated by posting a photo of himself in the bath with his rubber duck and a bottle of Prosecco. And he admitted he decided to have fun promoting the record, which tracks the aftermath of a break-up and contains songs he refers to as 'sad bangers'. He said: 'The songs are so serious, and this album maybe sounds older than my last one. The songs speak for themselves, so why not have a bit of fun promoting it? 'I've tried to be cool before, trying to emulate bands like Frightened Rabbit, but my music's not cool. Del Amitri are my favourite band, and my mates are constantly rinsing me for that because they've never been cool.' The songwriter's already working on new tunes, while basking in his unexpected success. He joked: 'I've been No. 1-selling artist, even if I was only at the top of that folk chart for a day. Nobody can take that away from me now. I always wanted to get my music into the charts, and now I can say I've done it.' I am David Laing supports Withered Hand on July 18 at the Beacon, Greenock. 'They want to be associated with her, and they love the fact that she's single because it means she's potentially obtainable to guys. "Meanwhile, women feel like she's more relatable because of the likely heartbreak she's had, so they want to support her too. 'There's lots of opportunities in this from a branding point of view - and with 25m Instagram followers, she's got a lot of influence!' Last week, the Euphoria star confirmed reports that had been circulating since February, that, after seven years, she'd broken up with fiancé Jonathan Davino. Speaking to The Sunday Times Style magazine, she said she was now single, adding, 'I'm learning a lot about myself, spending more time with my friends. And I'm loving it.' Meanwhile, her recent - very tongue in cheek - campaign for Dr Squatch, which saw her release a range of soap made out of her own bathwater, proves the fact that she knows her sexy image sells. Joking that the idea was born from 'dirty little boys' who 'wouldn't stop asking' for her used bathwater, Sydney cheekily posed for the men's soap company in a bathtub. Would she have done so willingly if she were still engaged? Possibly. But she couldn't fully represent that attainable fantasy to her mostly male market with a ring on her finger. 'I think that's what's great about her - she owns herself and she owns the way she looks. 'She's a bit like Sabrina Carpenter - they both own their sexuality and it's up to them what they push and what they don't push.' Of course, this isn't the first time that Sydney has leaned into her desirability to earn the big bucks. In 2023, she starred in the romcom Anyone But You - but it was the press tour to promote the movie that had fans running to the cinemas, as they couldn't get enough of Sydney's 'are they - aren't they' chemistry with co-star Glen Powell. The pair have both been open about how they harnessed the rumours surrounding their relationship to feed fans' frenzy, and ultimately guarantee box office success. On camera, she hasn't shied away from her sexy looks in the past - especially with envelope pushing roles in Euphoria and the erotic thriller The Voyeurs. But, given that - up until recently - she was engaged in real life, it was confined to make believe. Money minded As the actress herself has explained, she's driven to make a lot of money, which comes from her parents' financial struggles during childhood. When she was 16, her parents, Lisa and Steven, had to sell their home in Washington, forcing the family (she has one younger brother, Trent) to live in one bedroom together in a Holiday Inn hotel for eight and a half months. Three years later, her parents filed for bankruptcy. While Sydney earned $2m to star in Anyone But You, she's since upped her film fee to around $7.5m - earning her a reported net worth today of approximately $40m. And she spends it well, admitting she's 'obsessed with Zillow' (America's version of Rightmove), and has invested in a highly lucrative property portfolio that includes homes in Bel Air, Los Angeles, Florida Keys, and several more properties in the Pacific Northwest. She also has a vintage car collection - which she last added to with a $68,500 Fiat Jolly. Meanwhile, the savvy star has also cemented herself behind the camera in Hollywood, producing Anyone But You and her recent film Immaculate. She's also producing her two upcoming movies - The Housemaid, and an untitled biopic about the boxer Christy Martin. However, as she herself has previously said, the acting and producing gigs only go so far - especially in today's economy. 'They don't pay actors like they used to,' she said in 2022. 'And with streamers, you no longer get residuals'. On brand That's where the brand deals come in. According to Nick, Sydney's massive following - which eclipses most actresses working today - guarantees her a sizeable income from sponsored content. That means that, the way things are going, she could easily double her fortune in no time. 'She could absolutely double it - I think she could be making hundreds of thousands per post,' he explains. 'She's wearing clothes from the likes of Miu Miu and jewellery from De Beers - ultra fabulous stuff. Sydney's really captured the zeitgeist.' As for where she goes from here, the sky's the limit for the star - who's somehow achieved the impossible: straddling the worlds of old Hollywood and new-age social media. Some stars in the past have tried and failed to be both commercial and respected in acting circles, but Sydney's somehow struck that balance. If she were a mediocre actress, she couldn't have done this Nick Ede According to Nick, her brand comes down to some excellent strategising and talent management. 'If she were a mediocre actress, she couldn't have done this,' he says. 'Look at Megan Fox, who kind of ruined her career because her sexuality came before her acting. 'Sydney's different - she's got really great range, and also has that respect of Hollywood, which allows her to do these brand deals. 'She's very clever - and the team behind her must be really clever as well. Everyone understands what she's doing. 'She's peppering the deals with movies and she's not over-saturating in either arena - that means we'll keep buying into her.' As for where she goes from here, it seems the sky's the limit for Hollywood's ultimate It Girl. She'll soon be starring as boxer Christy - in a film that's already being pegged for Oscar success. Meanwhile, in the meantime, she's proving she's got enough self-awareness - and cheekiness - to cash in on her sex appeal. It seems that, as long as people are happy to buy soap made of her bathwater, she'll continue to sell it.
