Police in Berks warn of checkpoints, DUI patrols through graduation party season

Checkpoints, roving DUI patrols and undercover details at stores that sell alcoholic beverages are in the works in Berks County for the rest of June, a time when high school graduation parties are typically held, officials announced. The enhanced enforcement follows a month in which local police took about two dozen impaired drivers off the roads in Berks on a single night in sobriety checkpoints, officials said. While police congratulate the 2025 graduates and encourage them to celebrate with friends and family, they remind them of the zero-tolerance policy for underage drinkers under Pennsylvania law. The checkpoints and DUI patrols are being conducted with the North Central Regional DUI Enforcement Program, which equips, funds and coordinates the municipal police DUI enforcement in Berks, Schuylkill and 12 other counties. The program is funded through grants from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Adults also face arrest if they are caught serving alcohol to a person under the age of 21. That's in addition to their liability for hosting a party in which alcohol is available to minors. Police may also be posing as store employees to catch those buying alcohol for minors, a program known as 'Cops in Shops.' While the latest waves of enforcement have focused on drinking activities surrounding proms and graduation events, anyone who drives while impaired risks arrest. Three checkpoints were conducted the same night in mid-May, one in Cumru Township and two others hosted jointly by the Eastern Berks Regional and Exeter Township police departments. Combined, police made 25 DUI arrests. In just two hours on Route 100 in Colebrookdale Township, officers arrested seven drivers for suspected DUI. Later that night, officers moved the checkpoint to Route 422 in Exeter where they made five more arrests. 'Everyone was surprised by the number of encounters with impaired drivers,' Eastern Berks Police Chief Barry Leatherman said. 'It tells us a lot about the amount of impaired driving out there.' While catching impaired drivers is the goal of checkpoints, locations of which are determined by data on DUI-related crashes, police would rather make no arrests, which would indicate a scarcity of impaired drivers, Leatherman said. 'The reality is if people are breaking the law by doing this (driving after consuming alcohol or using controlled substances) they need to be caught because they're endangering the lives of everyone on the road,' he said. Young people need to think about potential deadly consequences of impaired driving, Leatherman said. 'The thought of getting arrested or losing your license really pales in comparison to the human toll,' he said.

'The calm voice on the other end': Remembering Major Leslie Letherman's legacy of service

LONDON — A hero was laid to rest on Memorial Day, with community members lining London's Main Street to pay tribute as the funeral process passed by. Major Leslie Leatherman spent a lifetime answering the call of public service. Whether through firefighting (39 years with Laurel County Fire Department), emergency medical response, or dispatching, he was known throughout the area of southeastern Kentucky for his steady presence and unwavering dedication. Leatherman lost his life during the deadly storms that devastated London and Laurel County throughout the night of Friday, May 16, and early Saturday morning of May 17. As severe weather tore through the area, Leatherman died protecting his wife, Michelle, who survived the storm. His final act was one of courage — shielding another from harm, just as he had done his entire career. 'Les has spent his adult life dedicated to public service,' stated Brandon Prewitt, Whitley County Police Chief and E-911 Director. 'From his fire training, his time in an ambulance, or most of his time behind the radio for the first responders — if you were out in the field, no matter if it was police, fire, or EMS, Les is the one you would want to be sitting in the chair behind the radio.' Those who worked alongside Leatherman saw his compassion firsthand. He was the kind of colleague who didn't wait to be asked−he showed up, stepped in, and supported his fellow responders in every way possible. Prewitt continued by expressing how great Leatherman truly was at his job, and how his dedication and heartfelt attitude would never leave the dispatch. 'Les's heart was and will always be in the radio room of a dispatch center, and you could sure tell it,' Prewitt stated. 'He was the best example of a great dispatch.' Whitley County Judge Executive Pat White Jr. called Leatherman a 'devoted and knowledgeable dispatcher and Assistant Director,' and said he was remembered by many as 'the calm voice on the other end of the phone.' 'Les spent his life in public service. He dedicated nearly all of his adult life to serving others,' White said. 'He was a tremendous asset to Whitley County E-911. Les was instrumental in training our employees at the dispatch center and was a fine person who will be very missed.' Through every call answered and every life helped, Maj. Leslie Leatherman left a mark on his community that will certainly not be forgotten. The impact of his service remains woven into the fabric of southeastern Kentucky's emergency response system. The echo of his calm voice mentioned by White, the memory of his bravery touched on by Prewitt−these examples he set will continue to guide and inspire those who serve after him. As the region mourns his loss, Maj. Leatherman will be honored not only for how he served, but for the way he lived — with courage, humility, and an enduring commitment to protecting others.

2 Florida beaches land on Dr. Beach's top 10 list for 2025

Two of Florida's Gulf Coast beaches have been recognized among the top 10 beaches in America, according to an annual ranking from Dr. Beach. The 2025 list includes Delnor-Wiggins Pass State Park in Naples at spot number four and St. Andrews State Park in Panama City at spot number seven. Coopers Beach in Southampton, New York, took the top spot in this year's annual ranking that Dr. Stephen Leatherman has been compiling since 1991. The Florida International University professor considers 50 factors when selecting the nation's best beaches each year. Some of the criteria are beach material (fine sand ranks highest), air and water temperature, number of sunny days, wildlife, litter and development. Hawaii's beaches took four of the top 10 spots on the list, which also honored stretches of sand in South Carolina, Massachusetts and one other New York beach. Since 2016, Florida beaches have landed at the top of the list three times including St. George Island State Park in the Panhandle in 2023. The 2020 winner was Grayton Beach State Park while Siesta Beach on Siesta Key was named number one in 2017. These top beaches were removed from contention for this year's title after winning previously. Caladesi Island State Park came in number four last year but was taken out of consideration for this year's list; the beach is still closed amid ongoing recovery efforts following 2024's tumultuous hurricane season. Delnor-Wiggins Pass ranked number eight on last year's list and moved up four spots for 2025. 'This barrier island beach boasts of beautiful white sand beaches and crystal-clear Gulf waters,' Leatherman writes on his website. 'Activities include swimming, snorkeling, paddle boarding, shelling, and fishing. Wildlife in the park includes bald eagles, ospreys, and manatees. Pine trees provide welcome shade.' As for St. Andrews State Park, which has Leatherman notes that 'This strikingly white sandy beach is great for shelling and bird watching. Swimming and snorkeling are popular in both the Gulf of America and St. Andrews Bay on the other side.' ‘Dr. Beach' names top 10 US beaches of 2025

(NEXSTAR) – Stephen Leatherman, the coastal scientist and professor known as 'Dr. Beach,' has revealed his picks for the top beaches of 2025. This year, a beach on Long Island in New York topped the annual list, which has often been dominated by sandy spots in Hawaii or Florida in previous years. 'Coopers Beach is located on the south shore of Long Island, New York, shielded from the cold Labrador currents in the beautiful village of Southampton,' reads a description shared to Dr. Beach's official website. 'As the first 'Gold Coast' in the country, Coopers Beach is hundreds of yards wide, made of grainy white quartz sand,' Leatherman added. 'The beach is backed by large sand dunes covered by American beach grass interspersed with extravagant mansions.' Coopers beach has also been on a steady trajectory toward the No. 1 spot, having placed third in Dr. Beach's list in 2023 and earning second place in the 2024 edition. (AP Photo/Kathy Willens, File) As for the rest of the 2025 list, two beaches in Hawaii — Wailea Beach in Maui, and Poipu Beach in Kauai — were ranked second and third. Additional beaches in New York and Hawaii, as well as beaches in Florida, South Carolina and Massachusetts, rounded out the top 10. Leatherman, a professor and the director of the Laboratory for Coastal Research at Florida International University, has been publishing his annual list since 1991. He bases his annual rankings on evaluations of fifty different criteria, including water temperatures, sand softness, crime levels and the availability of beach amenities. Being an advocate for smoke-free beaches, Leatherman also awards 'bonus points' for beaches that prohibit such activity, according to his past news releases. Past winners, and more information on each of the beaches that made this year's list, can be found at the Dr. Beach website.
