Form 1 students plead guilty to slapping classmate
KAJANG: Two 13-year-old boys pleaded guilty today to a joint charge of indecent behaviour after they slapped a classmate at a mall last week. The Form One students, who cannot be named because they are juveniles, made their plea in Mandarin before magistrate Fatin Dayana Jalil in a closed-door proceeding. The boys were accused of committing the offence at 11am on July 30 at a shopping mall. The charge was framed under Section 14 of the Minor Offences Act for indecent behaviour that is likely to cause a breach of the peace. It was read with Section 34 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum RM100 fine. The boys' lawyer, Lee Tee Kiat, said outside the courtroom that his clients were granted bail of RM500 with one surety each. "I urged the court to impose a reasonable bail sum because if it is excessive, it is akin to punishment for the boys," he said. "The boys will now undergo a social assessment with the Welfare Department for a month before the report is submitted to the court." Lee said the teenagers were remorseful over what had happened. "They are sad. They do not know the implications of their actions. The court can punish them severely, and I told them to repent," he said. Earlier, Deputy Public Prosecutor Siti Nur Alia Safri had requested bail be set at RM5,000 with one surety each. The court set Sept 18 for the submission of the report before sentencing. It was previously reported that the students were arrested after the victim lodged a police report. A video of the incident had gone viral.
