Leica partners with Greg Williams for the first-ever 'Artist Look' in the Leica Lux app inspired by the classic Tri-X 400 look

Leica has unveiled the latest update to its LUX iPhone app, and with it, the first in a new series of cinematic "Artist Looks" - a collaboration that begins with British photographer Greg Williams. Known for his emotionally resonant and cinematic imagery, Williams brings his distinct visual language to Leica Lux, creating a photographic experience that channels the classic character of Kodak Tri-X 400 film, reimagined for mobile photography. This new aesthetic prioritizes warmth, authenticity, and intimacy - consciously steering away from artificial enhancements to deliver a look that feels timeless and natural. Greg Williams is no stranger to the Leica world. His lens has captured the likes of Daniel Craig, Kate Winslet, and Margot Robbie, shaping the public face of modern Hollywood with a style that is both polished and unfiltered. A long-time Leica devotee, Williams was also behind the lens of the Leica Q2 Daniel Craig Edition campaign. His work is grounded in a philosophy of cinematic realism - a blend of documentary honesty and crafted composition. That same ethos now arrives in the Leica Lux app, allowing users to channel his unique vision in their everyday shooting. 'I wanted to create a look that feels real – not overdone, not artificial. No extra sharpening, no effects – just the image and the moment. The Leica Lux app made it possible to bring that aesthetic to the smartphone – with a cinematic depth I previously only knew from my Leica cameras,' Williams says. The new look has been carefully calibrated to perform in a range of lighting conditions, staying faithful to the subtleties that define Williams' work. Alongside the introduction of the Artist Look, Leica Lux v1.7 adds a layer of practicality with a customization feature that lets users mark their favorite looks for quicker access. It's a considered update that caters to photographers working with consistent stylistic themes and seeking efficiency on the go. Leica has also confirmed that this new look will be integrated into the Leica FOTOS app in the near future, meaning the aesthetic developed by Williams will soon be available for use with Leica cameras themselves. Since acquiring the Norwegian smartphone photography startup Fjorden Electra in 2023, Leica has made bold moves into the mobile space. The Leica LUX app, which launched in 2024, has aimed to bring the character of Leica lenses to iPhone photography, complete with manual controls and a suite of visual presets that echo the brand's legendary optics. With an App Store rating of 4.8 stars, it's already proving to be the photographer's mobile tool of choice. The latest update, v1.7, is available now. The Greg Williams Artist Look is included in the full version of the app, and available free for one year with registration of a Leica Lux Grip.

Leica can now style your iPhone photos to mimic a pro photographer

Leica is bringing a new kind of filter effect called 'Artist Looks' to its Lux camera app for iPhones, with the first one adjusting your photos to resemble the style and body of work of celebrity photographer Greg Williams. Artist Looks, like the other color and black-and-white looks in Leica's app, are essentially one-click filter presets for easy photo editing. It's the first time Leica Camera has collaborated with a pro on looks designed to mimic their personal aesthetic. In Williams's case, his Artist Look is lightly inspired by Kodak Tri-X film, converting your color photos to black and white — with the white point shifted a touch to make the whites slightly off-white and yielding a more vintage warm-tone feel. The Leica Lux app update version 1.7 on the iOS App Store will offer the Greg Williams look for Lux Pro account subscribers paying $6.99 per month or $69.99 annually, or included for anyone who buys Leica's phone grip that now costs $625 post-tariffs. The Lux app is Leica's dedicated camera app for iPhones, allowing free and paid users to take smartphone pictures with a bit of Leica's color science. In addition to a selection of Leica-tuned photo filters like Classic, Chrome, and one based on the vintage Leica I Model A camera, the app also offers some signature looks taken from specific Leica lenses. The in-app 'lenses' are essentially portrait mode processing recipes modeled after lenses like the 50mm f/1.2 Noctilux or a 35mm f/1.4 Summilux. Leica is also releasing an update to its Fotos app that allows owners of the Leica Q3, Q3 43, SL3 and SL3-S to download the Greg Williams look directly into their cameras. And if you don't have one of those newer models, the Fotos app can apply the filter to JPG files shot with any Leica with Wi-Fi that can upload images to the app. There's no paywall for the Artist Look in the Fotos app, other than the barrier to entry of owning an actual Leica. Photo filters and film recipes are nothing new to mobile photography or users of Fujifilm cameras. While Fujifilm leans on its own film stocks for reference in its popular X100 line, other camera-makers typically go the standard route (vivid, neutral, etc.) or get creative, like Panasonic's Lumix S9 camera and its many custom profiles. This new way of leaning on a pro photog's own style is certainly novel. It might be cool to see some iconic Leica photographers get their own Artist Look, if I'm ever strolling down the street and feeling a little Elliott Erwitt-y. Though, I imagine some pros may charge a pretty penny to cop their style.

Turn your iPhone into a Leica camera with the new Leica Lux Grip

When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. If you have ever dreamed of owning a Leica camera and can't quite afford their premium prices, or perhaps you are just a Leica obsessive who looks on non-Leica color science with disdain – you can now get as close as possible to a full Leica camera experience on your iPhone with Leica's brand new Leica Lux Grip and Leica Lux app. The newly announced magnetic grip attachment snaps to the back of an iPhone using Apple's built-in MagSafe magnetic array and connects to the phone via Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) pairing. The grip looks to be designed and built to Leica's usual premium high-quality standards and is made from metal – although thankfully aluminum and not brass like a Leica M11 – and weighs just 130 grams. The grip features a two-stage shutter release, with a half press activating the focus and a full press taking the image. There are also two custom buttons – although by default one will switch between shooting modes, and the other can be used to access frequently used settings – you can change these using the Leica Lux app. Finally, there is a control dial on the front of the grip for flicking between settings like zoom, aperture, shutter speed, and exposure compensation. Image 1 of 3 Image 2 of 3 Image 3 of 3 The Leica Lux Grip works in tandem with the Leica Lux app, which is available right now for free on the iOS App Store, (sorry Android users, but this is not for you), and doesn't actually require the Lux Grip to use. Not to be confused with Leica Fotos, which is used for transferring images from Leica cameras – the Leica Lux app was released last year as a pro camera app for capturing images with classic Leica Looks directly from the iPhone cameras. The app can also mimic the style of certain Leica lenses as well as get in-depth with manual capture controls. Unfortunately, some of the best looks in the Leica Lux app are locked behind a paywall, but buying the Leica Lux Grip grants one year of Lux Pro (usually $69.99/year or $6.99/month) which unlocks all of Leica Lux's Looks and lenses. This is not the first iPhone camera grip from Leica, with its Fjorden sub-brand previously releasing another much more discrete MagSafe compatible control grip – although interestingly, this time around, Leica has decided to brand this new grip with its own name. The Leica Lux Grip is available immediately from Leica stores and will cost $329 / £260 – and the Leica Lux app can be downloaded right now from Apple's App Store for iOS (or iPadOS).
