Real Madrid target surprise Arsenal star with contract talks 'not going well'
Real Madrid could make a shock move for an Arsenal star whose contract negotiations are 'not going well' according to reports. It's set to be a big summer for both clubs who ended up having underwhelming seasons, finishing runners-up in the Premier League and La Liga. Arsenal are close to securing a £51million transfer for midfielder Martin Zubimendi and are planning to spend big on a new striker, likely to be either Benjamin Sesko or Viktor Gyokeres. Real meanwhile have a new manager as Xabi Alonso replaces Carlo Ancelotti and the Spaniard has already made his first signing in the form of Trent Alexander-Arnold. The right-back was set to move to Madrid on a free but Los Blancos will now pay Liverpool £8.4m to sign him early so he can play in the upcoming Club World Cup. Real have also been linked with making a big money move for William Saliba, but they now have their eye on another Arsenal defender. Myles Lewis-Skelly has just 12 months left on his Gunners contract and, as reported by The Guardian, talks over a new deal are 'not going well'. Real are keeping tabs on the situation and could look to sign another England star following Jude Bellingham and Alexander-Arnold. 18-year-old Lewis-Skelly has enjoyed a meteoric rise since his senior debut last September, making 39 appearances across all competitions, including two stunning performances against Real in the Champions League. More Trending Thomas Tuchel is certainly a fan, selecting the teenager in his first England squad in March before he scored on his debut against Albania. While bizarrely not nominated for the official award, both Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher named Lewis-Skelly as their young player of the season. 'At 18 you're a baby,' Liverpool hero Carragher said on Sky Sports. 'The thought you could win Young Player of the Year at that age. That's something that Michael Owen does or Wayne Rooney, absolute superstars. 'I couldn't believe he wasn't on that list. The reason I went for him was how well he played in big games that I've watched. Against Man City, against Liverpool, in the Bernabeu [against Real].' 'That [left-back] has been a massive problem position for Arsenal and he's gone in and looked like it's his and he's always been there,' Manchester United legend Neville added. 'That's the biggest compliment you can give to a young player, they just slot in. [Bukayo] Saka's done it in the last few years. To go in that position and do what he's done.' Lewis-Skelly's efforts have been all the more impressive given that he came through the academy as a midfielder but has played almost exclusively as a left-back under Mikel Arteta. Arsenal will be desperate to tie him down to a new deal and they are also in contract talks with fellow wonderkid Ethan Nwaneri. The likes of Lewis-Skelly and Alexander-Arnold will next be in action when England take on Andorra in a World Cup qualifier on June 7. For more stories like this, check our sport page. Real Madrid interested in Lewis-Skelly with Arsenal star's deal up in 12 months and contract talks ‘not going well'
MYLES LEWIS-SKELLY is being eyed for a stunning transfer by Real Madrid, according to reports. The youngster has enjoyed a breakthrough campaign under Mikel Arteta at the Emirates, playing 42 games for the Gunners and chipping in with one goal and three assists. That's because with just one year left on his contract, Real Madrid are now "sniffing around" the situation as they possibly eye another free transfer for an English star. According to The Guardian, negotiations between the player and Arsenal over new terms are "not going well." And this has left Spanish giants Real on red alert to sign the England international full-back. Combined with Jude Bellingham already at the club, it means Xabi Alonso's new-look Madrid team could feature as many as three English stars at the Bernabeu. But ultimately, the player's future could depend on where he is seen as playing long-term. Lewis-Skelly played as a midfielder during his days in the Hale End Academy, but has primarily starred as a left-back - often inverting - since breaking into the Arsenal first-team. He said: "He is very intelligent, very willing and very physical. If you have those three ingredients and you have a personality that can go through blips — it can happen — that is Myles. Lewis-Skelly was selected in Thomas Tuchel's latest England squad. Tuchel deployed him as a full-back in his last two Three Lions' appearances, World Cup qualification clashes against Albania and Latvia in March, the first of which Lewis-Skelly scored in. Losing him to Los Blancos, who have also been long-term admirers of William Saliba, would be a bitter blow to the Gunners long-term transfer plans. In terms of incomings this summer, Arsenal have submitted an offer to land Sporting Lisbon star Viktor Gyokeres but have been joined in the pursuit by Chelsea. However, the Blues being boosted after news emerged that Liam Delap wants to join them may give the Gunners a clear shot at the former Coventry ace. 5 Advertisement Join SUN CLUB for the Arsenal Files every Friday plus in-depth coverage and exclusives from The Emirates

Arsenal star labelled 'incredible' has Carragher and Neville in agreement
Jamie Carragher and Gary Neville believe Arsenal star Myles Lewis-Skelly is the Young Player of the Season, with the 18-year-old defender enjoying an "incredible" breakout season Jamie Carragher and Gary Neville have hailed Arsenal's teenage sensation Myles Lewis-Skelly and named the 18-year-old as their pick for Young Player of the Season. Lewis-Skelly has enjoyed a breakout campaign for the Gunners, making 38 appearances across all competitions. The defender has also earned two England caps under new manager Thomas Tuchel, but he did not make the Premier League's shortlist for their Young Player of the Season award despite both Carragher and Neville believing he deserves to win it. Sharing their picks for a number of end-of-season awards on Sky Sports ' Monday Night Football, Carragher compared Lewis-Skelly to Michael Owen and Wayne Rooney. "At 18 you're a baby," Carragher said. "The thought you could win Young Player of the Year at that age. That's something that Michael Owen does or Wayne Rooney, absolute superstars. I couldn't believe he wasn't on that list. The reason I went for him was how well he played in big games that I've watched. "Against Man City, against Liverpool, in the Bernabeu [against Real Madrid ]. It was more five or six big performance in big venues. I remember going to those venues at 23-24 and that was a lot for me. "To actually go there and play well, you felt like you needed to be in your peak to go to these big stadiums and play really well and feel comfortable. To be doing that at 18. Wow!" Neville also branded Lewis-Skelly "incredible", with the teenager making the most of his opportunity at left-back after the likes of Jurrien Timber and Riccardo Calafiori were sidelined with injuries early on in the campaign. "That's been a massive problem position for Arsenal," Neville explained. "And he's gone in and looked like it's his and he's always been there. That's the biggest compliment you can give to a young player, they just slot in. "[Bukayo] Saka's done it in the last few years. To go in that position and do what he's done. The ability to take the ball in the biggest games in tight situations. It's incredible what he's doing." And Gunners boss Mikel Arteta has been delighted with Lewis-Skelly's progression this season, describing him as a "very rare" talent after impressing in a north London derby win earlier this year. "At 18 years old, playing against [Dejan] Kulusevski and [Brennan] Johnson in a big London derby for the first time, to perform with that composure again," Arteta said. "With that attitude, that control, emotionally, it's very rare to see. "It makes everybody at the club very proud. He's been in our system for a very long time. The kind of education that the academy has given to our boys to get prepared, and then we have to pick them in the moment that we believe they are ready. "With him, it was early and in a different position, because he has never played as a full-back before. He responded in the manner of his own, which is a joy to watch."
