Why Next Season Will See The Best Of Lewis Miley At Newcastle United

(Photo by) Getty Images When Lewis Miley made his Newcastle United debut weeks after his 17th birthday on May 28, 2023, it was clear there was something different about this academy graduate. It was the final day of the season, Newcastle had already secured Champions League qualification and was bringing its campaign to a close with a 1-1 draw at Chelsea. Miley had the face of a boy and the core strength of a Premier League player. He was tall and lanky, but deft with the ball at his feet. There was one moment in the game to sit up and take notice; he picked the ball up in space in the Chelsea half, before driving forward and releasing a thunderous shot that clipped the crossbar. Newcastle has never had the best track record of producing youth players capable of becoming permanent fixtures in the first team. Sean Longstaff was the last player to do so in 2019; although he is still part of Eddie Howe's squad, he has never fully convinced and is expected to leave this summer should a suitable offer arrive. But from that day. the talk around Miley wasn't simply if he would make it but when and how far he could go. His passing range and game intelligence were well beyond his age and soon, as is always the way, comparisons were made with another midfielder of the same ilk from the region: former Manchester United and England man Michael Carrick. He signed professional terms that summer, but it was important for everyone to stay calm about his development, especially Miley himself. It is hard to see anything fazing him, though. Longstaff had similar attention when he first came through; a strange competition among fans with West Ham's Declan Rice emerging at the same time, and serious interest from Manchester United over a possible transfer led to a £50m ($68m) price tag. By that point, he had suffered an injury, ironically in a defeat at West Ham when Rice scored; as he went on to play for England and join Arsenal, Longstaff faltered. His career has been more than good; he has contributed in the first team regularly under Howe, who he admits 'saved his Newcastle career' when he arrived in November 2021 after a tough spell under former manager Steve Bruce. But there is a ceiling to his game. Miley, and those around him, should heed some of the warnings of what happened with Longstaff. There are key differences too; Miley is more than used to the first team pressure, in the Premier League and Champions League, and he is still younger than Longstaff was when he broke through. By November 2023, he was playing every game in midfield due to a mounting injury crisis. He set up a goal for Alexander Isak in his first full game against Chelsea before more than holding his own away at Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League and Manchester United, playing alongside Bruno Guimaraes, who has since been made club captain. By that point, the rest of England had woken up to his talent; in December, he scored his first goal against Fulham. Midfielders who were ahead of him in the pecking order, Joelinton and Joe Willock, returned from injury and Sandro Tonali's 10 month gambling ban ended last August. Now some questions over Miley's future have been asked; does he need more first team football and should he leave St James' Park to get it? Loan deals have been suggested, while Crystal Palace has been credited with interest in a permanent transfer. Context and calm are required; Miley is now 19 and ready for more regular games, but he will get them at Newcastle, back in the Champions League, next season. Coaches are often put under pressure to play young talents as often as they can when it is clear how good they are, but overplaying as a teenager can have a negative impact on development and longevity of careers in later years. The key is balance; usurping Guimaraes, Tonali and Joelinton is not going to be easy, but Miley has a great platform to take the next step in his career, steadily. Now, of course, there is expectation. Everybody knows how good Miley is, and he is the poster boy for the future of Newcastle's academy. He has to keep growing and inspire more to follow in his footsteps. With Profit and Sustainability Rules hindering Newcastle's growth at every turn, a thriving youth system is imperative. Next season is huge for Miley. He can become a key player for Howe, potentially as first reserve for the trio of more experienced midfielders. Even though he is still behind them in the pecking order, it doesn't mean he'd be better off anywhere else.

'I thought Miley might have been selected ahead of Willock'

BBC Radio Newcastle's Matthew Raisbeck says he was surprised Joe Willock started ahead of Lewis Miley on was not named in the squad against Ipswich, and it has been reported he could miss the rest of the season through a knee four games left to play, his absence could be a huge blow for Newcastle in their pursuit of Champions League who should replace Joelinton, Raisbeck said: "I thought Lewis Miley might have been selected on Saturday against Ipswich. I'm not questioning the decision, but he's so highly rated and I think we all want to see more of him. "I'm a big fan of Willock. We all want to see him get back to the level he was at two years ago when Newcastle got in the Champions League because he was terrific on the left side, going into the forward line. Because of injuries he's had a tough couple of years and hasn't really been able to get to that level again, which is a real shame. "Willock will always be a goal threat, but could Miley help Newcastle in possession against Brighton?"Sean Longstaff's last Premier League start was in December against Brentford. He's not a first-choice player anymore."Listen to the full clip on BBC SoundsWho would you select in midfield? Make your choice

Newcastle's Lewis Miley drawing interest from top leagues: Report

Newcastle United midfielder Lewis Miley is attracting attention from clubs across England and Germany ahead of the summer transfer window, according to a report by Fabrizio Romano. The 18-year-old has struggled for regular minutes under Eddie Howe this season, following a metatarsal fracture that ruled him out of last summer's pre-season tour. Advertisement Although Miley returned to action in October 2024, the strong competition in Newcastle's midfield—one featuring Bruno Guimaraes, Sandro Tonali, and Joelinton—has made it impossible for Miley to find steady playing time. After making 19 starts and nine substitute appearances during his breakout 2023–24 campaign, Miley has started just one Premier League match this season, playing just a total of 219 minutes across 11 league appearances before the road game at Aston Villa. Miley also featured in all three of Newcastle's FA Cup matches before their fifth-round exit to Brighton and came off the bench in two Carabao Cup ties. Despite the reduced role this term, the midfielder's talent has not gone unnoticed. Clubs in both the Premier League and Bundesliga are monitoring his situation closely, as reported by Romano. Miley remains under long-term contract at St James' Park, with his current deal running until June 2029. Advertisement Miley, a lifelong Newcastle fan from County Durham, joined the club's academy at age seven and signed his first professional contract in May 2023. He made his Premier League debut later that month and scored his first top-flight goal in a 3–0 win over Fulham in December 2023, becoming the youngest player to score for Newcastle in the Premier League. Miley has since made two appearances for England's Under-21 side, but his days in Tyneside might be numbered. More from

'Should absolutely stay' or 'a loan the best plan'? Fans on Miley

We asked for your views on whether 18-year-old Lewis Miley should be sent out on loan next are some of your comments:Richard: He absolutely needs to stay! With Europe, hopefully in the Champions League, there will be plenty of opportunity for the minutes he needs for fluency. We have been saying we need better squad depth all season - it would be lunacy to loan him out!Josh: I think Miley would benefit from a loan, either with one of the relegated clubs in the Championship like Leicester or Ipswich, or with one of the promoted clubs like Burnley, Sheffield United or Leeds. Yes, he wasn't brilliant against Leicester but in all honesty I don't think anyone was, and he has put in some amazing displays. Give it to the end of the season and we'll see - I'm a bit on the fence with this If you send out Miley and William Osula on loan, who takes their place on the bench? Surely staying and training with the first team will benefit them in the long run. It's also worth remembering we'll be playing European football next season which will mean more game time for the both of Miley makes little impact at the moment when he does come on and he is not advanced enough physically to put his stamp on the game. He does little wrong but does not get involved, so a loan out may be best plan.

‘It feels like we lost the game': Howe left bemused by Forest's comeback

As the final whistle blew at St James' Park and Nottingham Forest's players collapsed to the turf in despair, Eddie Howe looked simply bemused and confused. Shortly afterwards Newcastle's manager said that, even though his team had won 4-3, he felt as if they had lost one of the most extraordinary Premier League games of the season. Torn between exasperation and relief, Howe did not initially know quite how to react as his side clung on to beat Nuno Espírito Santo's side in a match the home team had led 4-1 at one stage. It left Newcastle fifth and only three points behind Forest following a chaotic afternoon that could exert a significant bearing on Champions League qualification at the end of the season. 'I am still trying to control my thoughts and stay positive,' Howe said. 'It was a crazy game. You've seen the best of us and the worst of us. It feels like we lost the game, even though we won it.' At the end Yasir al-Rumayyan, Newcastle's chair, making a rare visit from Riyadh, stepped onto the pitch and embraced Howe. 'It was good to see the chairman but he might have heard a couple of swear words from me,' conceded the manager. 'I think he was in the same sort of emotional state though.' Newcastle's Saudi Arabian owners will decide this week whether they want the club to remain at a rebuilt St James' Park or seek planning permission for a new build in nearby Leazes Park and Al-Rumayyan will lead discussions with UK-based directors amid the seclusion of the Northumberland countryside. Any new ground will struggle to host matches as dramatic as this. 'At our best we were free flowing and dynamic but we weren't perfect,' Howe said. 'We couldn't get a grip when we lost momentum in the second half. It was a great first-half performance but we didn't manage the game well and we showed frailties at set plays.' At least Howe had Alexander Isak on his side. Newcastle's manager duly praised his Sweden striker for scoring his 49th and 50th Premier League goals in 76 appearances for the Tyneside club. 'It's a huge achievement, when Alex plays like he did in the first half, he's massive for us,' he said. Howe also had warm words for his 18-year-old midfielder Lewis Miley, who shone throughout and scored Newcastle's first goal. 'A really good performance from Lewis Miley,' he said. 'I'm very pleased with his development.' 'We made mistakes, Newcastle made mistakes but it was two totally different halves,' the Forest manager said. 'In the first half I didn't recognise our team, we were so bad, but the second half was much better. 'We started well and scored but then Newcastle just rolled over us. In the first half every time Newcastle had the ball they looked like scoring. But I wish there had been another 10 minutes at the end of the second half. We needed that extra time because, by the end, we were on top and had Newcastle on the ropes. 'Now it's about trying to settle down, calm down and be our true selves.'
