Killarney's Vickers brothers win gold and silver for Munster in 800m race at Tailteann Games

Liam Rohan won gold medals in the shot and discus, Kevin O'Shea took gold in the javelin, and Babatunde Smith leaped to gold in the high jump Kerryman Kerry brothers Isaac and Ryan Vickers made history at the Irish Schools' Tailteann Interprovincial Games in SETU Carlow on Saturday when they won gold and silver respectively in the 800m event, the first time – as far as experts could tell – that brothers finished first and second in the same event at this level. Apart from the Vickers brothers amazing achievement, a host of other Kerry post-primary students produced brilliants results at these games, which give second-level students from the junior and intermediate grades a chance to represent their province based on their performances at the provincial schools' championships last month.

Liam Rohan threw championship best performances in the javelin and the shot put in the South event while Kevin O'Shea also had a championship best throw in the javelin in the North event Kerryman The high standard of athletics talent in Kerry's post-primary schools was on full show across four days of action in the North and South Munster Schools championships last week in Ríocht and MTU Cork respectively. It wasn't just the medals that were up for grabs in these championships but qualifying places for the Munster Schools Championships which are on this Saturday. Championship best performances (cbp) were clocked up by a number of Kerry students. Among them was the ever-improving Liam Rohan (Presentation Milltown) who threw the intermediate discus a whopping 43.97m in the South Munster Championships. For good measure, he repeated the feat in the shot put with a launch of 14.54m for another CBP.
