Al-Ahly Tripoli clinches derby win to top championship playoff group
Al-Ahly Tripoli has taken the lead in the Libyan Premier League's championship playoff group after a commanding 4-1 victory over city rivals Al-Ittihad in the derby clash of matchday three. The win puts Al-Ahly Tripoli at the top with 7 points, two ahead of closest challengers Al-Hilal and Al-Akhdar, who drew 2-2 in their fixture. The match started with high intensity as Algerian forward Ismail Belkasmi opened the scoring for Al-Ahly Tripoli in the second minute, assisted by standout performer Hamdou Elhouni. Al-Ittihad responded through Taher Bin Amer, who capitalized on a defensive error by Ayman Al-Tihar, leveling the score before halftime despite Ahli Tripoli's dominance. In the second half, Al-Ahly Tripoli turned their control into goals. Full-back Mohamed Al-Ajnaf restored the lead, followed by a strike from Moayad Al-Lafi—again set up by Elhouni. The fourth goal came via an own goal by Al-Ittihad midfielder Wissam Abu Zreida, who lobbed the ball over his own goalkeeper Muad Al-Lafi. The match also saw tensions flare and missed chances, including a missed penalty by Moroccan Noufel Zerhouni. In another fixture, Al-Ahly Benghazi kept their hopes of securing a continental spot alive with a 2-0 win over Al-Swehli—marking their first victory and lifting them to 3 points, while Al-Sweihli remains on one. The playoff action continues Wednesday with potentially decisive matchups in round four. Leaders Al-Ahly Tripoli face Al-Sweihli, while Al-Hilal meets Al-Ittihad, who are still aiming for a continental berth. Meanwhile, Al-Akhdar takes on Al-Ahly Benghazi in a key battle among the chasing pack. Tags: Libyan Football League

Libyan Football Federation announces date for League playoffs
The Competitions Organizing Committee of the Libyan Football Federation announced on Thursday the launching date for the Championship Playoff six-team playoffs) of the Libyan Premier League's 50th edition, set to begin on July 24 at stadiums in Italy. The announcement came after the committee published the schedule of the five playoff rounds on its Facebook page. The first round will kick off on July 24 with a top clash between the leaders of both playoff groups: Al-Ahly Tripoli and Al-Ahly Benghazi. Other matches will see Al-Ittihad face Al-Akhdar, and Al-Hilal take on Al-Sweihli. This announcement puts an end to days of speculation and controversy over whether the playoff could actually be held in Italy as previously declared by LFF President Abdulmawla Al-Maghribi. Concerns had circulated on social media about difficulties in obtaining Italian visas, leading to widespread speculation in the sports community about possible backup plans involving stadiums in Tunisia, Turkey, or Algeria. The committee has not yet announced the specific stadiums for the matches, pending the conclusion of a site visit by an organizing delegation currently in Milan to inspect hotels for the teams, training grounds, and match venues. Potential stadiums include Atleti Azzurri d'Italia, home of Atalanta, and U-Power Stadium, home of Monza. There are also circulating reports suggesting the iconic San Siro stadium may host the Libyan Cup final, which will feature Al-Akhdar, Al-Ittihad, and Al-Ahly Tripoli and Benghazi teams in the semifinals, scheduled to take place in Italy after the conclusion of the playoff tournament. Libyan Football Federation Launches Probe into Al Ahli Tripoli-Al Ittihad Match Incident
The Libyan Football Federation (LFF) has announced the formation of a fact-finding committee to investigate the incidents that occurred during the match between Ahli Tripoli and Al-Ittihad. The game, part of the fourth week of the return leg in the first hexagonal round of the Libyan Premier League, was held on Tuesday, June 19, 2025, at Tripoli Stadium. The decision was issued by the LFF Board of Directors under Resolution No. 96 of 2025. The investigative committee includes Ali Mahdi Al-Sanousi (Board Member), Al-Mabrouk Mohamed Shouia (Appeals Committee Member), and Adel Misbah Swaisi (Referees Committee Member). According to the resolution, the committee is tasked with reviewing official complaints submitted by both clubs, Ahli Tripoli and Al-Ittihad, and will collect testimonies from all parties involved in the match-day events. The investigation will also include a full review of official reports and all available video footage and photographic evidence. The committee must submit a detailed report within 72 hours of the decision's issuance. The report will outline the circumstances of the incident, identify responsibilities, and provide recommendations to the LFF Board. The LFF also directed the Competitions Committee to postpone any decision regarding the outcome of the match until the investigation is complete. However, the Federation confirmed that the final round of the hexagonal stage will proceed as scheduled and will not be impacted by the ongoing inquiry. The decision is effective immediately and is binding on all relevant entities. Libya has been in chaos since a NATO-backed uprising toppled longtime leader Muammar Gaddafi in 2011. The county has for years been split between rival administrations. Libya's economy, heavily reliant on oil, has suffered due to the ongoing conflict. The instability has led to fluctuations in oil production and prices, impacting the global oil market and Libya's economy. The conflict has led to a significant humanitarian crisis in Libya, with thousands of people killed, and many more displaced. Migrants and refugees using Libya as a transit point to Europe have also faced dire conditions. The planned elections for December 2021 were delayed due to disagreements over election laws and the eligibility of certain candidates. This delay has raised concerns about the feasibility of a peaceful political transition. Despite the ceasefire, security remains a significant concern with sporadic fighting and the presence of mercenaries and foreign fighters. The unification of the military and the removal of foreign forces are crucial challenges.
