Eid Prayers Cancelled as Fighting Erupts in Libya

By Ahmad El-Assasy Violent clashes broke out on Thursday between rival militias in the western Libyan city of Sabratha, resulting in multiple deaths and injuries, according to medical sources. The fighting was triggered by the killing of an armed fighter from the city of Zawiya, prompting fierce retaliation by his militia group. Local sources confirmed that a child from the Al-Dabbashi family was also killed during the exchanges of fire. The violence erupted after an assault on the "Liberton" beach resort, which is reportedly under the control of local militia leader Ahmed Al-Dabbashi, known as "Al-Amo." The facility was set on fire during the attack. As gunfire from medium and heavy weapons echoed throughout the city, authorities cancelled Eid Al-Adha prayers for public safety. In the wake of the violence, a video circulated online showing groups of irregular migrants fleeing detention facilities in Sabratha amid the ongoing clashes. The Libyan Red Crescent's Sabratha branch issued an urgent appeal to residents, urging them to stay indoors and avoid conflict zones. The organization warned that civilians were at serious risk and emphasized the need to prioritize their safety. The fighting involves Al-Dabbashi's militia, which has been linked to drug trafficking, and a rival group from Zawiya known as the "Far" militia, accused of smuggling fuel, narcotics, and human trafficking. In a video message released after the outbreak of violence, Ahmed Al-Dabbashi ("Al-Amo") declared his intention to expose all parties involved in migrant smuggling networks operating in the city. 'I will name everyone implicated in this dirty business — individuals and entities alike. What happened today cannot be ignored,' he said. read more Gold prices rise, 21 Karat at EGP 3685 NATO's Role in Israeli-Palestinian Conflict US Expresses 'Strong Opposition' to New Turkish Military Operation in Syria Shoukry Meets Director-General of FAO Lavrov: confrontation bet. nuclear powers must be avoided News Iran Summons French Ambassador over Foreign Minister Remarks News Aboul Gheit Condemns Israeli Escalation in West Bank News Greek PM: Athens Plays Key Role in Improving Energy Security in Region News One Person Injured in Explosion at Ukrainian Embassy in Madrid News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier Sports Former Al Zamalek Player Ibrahim Shika Passes away after Long Battle with Cancer Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt Sports Neymar Announced for Brazil's Preliminary List for 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers News Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouly Inaugurates Two Indian Companies Arts & Culture New Archaeological Discovery from 26th Dynasty Uncovered in Karnak Temple Business Fear & Greed Index Plummets to Lowest Level Ever Recorded amid Global Trade War Arts & Culture Zahi Hawass: Claims of Columns Beneath the Pyramid of Khafre Are Lies News Flights suspended at Port Sudan Airport after Drone Attacks News Shell Unveils Cost-Cutting, LNG Growth Plan

Tripoli sees armed clashes amid chaos

Tripoli - Saba: News reports indicated that the Libyan capital, Tripoli, has been witnessing a dangerous escalation in the intensity of clashes since Wednesday morning between security and military formations affiliated with the unity government, on the one hand, and others affiliated with the Deterrence Force to Combat Organized Crime, on the other. Reports indicated that the clashes, in which heavy and medium weapons were used, extended to densely populated areas, including streets belonging to the municipalities of Tripoli Central and Ain Zara, as well as the vicinity of the Souq al-Juma municipality and other scattered neighborhoods, further complicating the humanitarian and security situation. The reports indicated that as the fighting intensified, families trapped in the fighting areas appealed to the relevant authorities to open safe corridors and allow them to leave to more areas. Meanwhile, the Libyan Red Crescent announced a state of maximum alert, noting that it had received a large number of distress calls, given the difficulty of field movement and the lack of safe routes. It called for the provision of safe corridors to enable them to provide aid and evacuate stranded families. The fighting resulted in extensive damage to public and private property, with a number of homes and vehicles severely damaged. Official authorities have yet to announce the final death toll. In this regard, the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), along with a number of diplomatic missions, called for an immediate and unconditional cessation of hostilities, stressing that the ongoing clashes deepen instability and threaten to spread the violence to other areas. These developments come after escalating security tensions in Tripoli over the past two days following military operations carried out by the Ministry of Defense affiliated with the Government of National Unity. These operations resulted in the seizure of the headquarters of the Stabilization Support Apparatus, affiliated with the Presidential Council, and the killing of the head of the apparatus, Abdul Ghani Al-Kikli, in an incident that sparked the ongoing clashes. Bodies of 29 more migrants found in southeast Libya, security official says

BENGHAZI (Reuters) - Libyan security authorities have recovered at least 29 more bodies of migrants in a mass grave in the southeast of the country, a security official told Reuters on Thursday. The total number of bodies recovered has now climbed to 57, after the attorney general said on Sunday that the authorities had recovered the corpses of 28 others in the north of Kufra, a huge southeastern district of the country. The International Organization for Migration said on Monday that the bodies found in two mass graves in Libya bore gunshot wounds. The main town in Kufra lies about 1,700 kilometres (1,000 miles) from the capital Tripoli. "We expect to find other graves during the ongoing recovering operation," said Mohamed Fadil, the head of services fighting illegal migration in the largely desert region. Fadil said the bodies had been numbered and samples for DNA testing taken in the presence of prosecutors and the criminal investigation department. Pictures shared with Reuters by a security source from Kufra showed security authorities and Libyan Red Crescent volunteers had set up tents in the desert, with white lines visible on the ground marking out the graves. Libya has become a transit route for migrants fleeing conflict and poverty to Europe via dangerous routes across the vast Sahara desert and over the Mediterranean, following the toppling of Muammar Gaddafi in a NATO-backed uprising in 2011. On February 6, the security directorate in the Alwahat region in the east of Libya recovered 19 bodies from a mass grave in Jikharra, while the Libyan Red Crescent recovered 10 bodies of migrants off Dila port in Zawiya city in the west after their boat sank.
