RTA's AI-Powered Smart Monitoring System Transforms Driving School Oversight in Dubai
Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has announced strong results from its Smart Monitoring System, an AI-powered initiative launched to enhance oversight of driving school training sessions. Developed by the Licensing Activities Monitoring Department, the system has monitored nearly 1.73 million training sessions for over 245,000 trainees in just seven months—a 14-fold increase compared to the same period last year. The system uses advanced machine learning and computer vision through smart cameras installed in training vehicles to detect violations such as mobile phone usage, unfastened seat belts, inappropriate attire, and driver distractions. These real-time insights, managed via RTA's Licensing Intelligent Operations Centre and inspectors' tablets, have cut inspection times from 20 minutes to just one minute and increased the detection of violations by five times. As part of Dubai's digital transformation agenda, the RTA plans to integrate predictive analytics and instructor performance data into the system to further enhance training quality and compliance. The system reinforces RTA's commitment to building a safe, efficient, and smart mobility ecosystem that supports high professional standards in driver training. News Source: Dubai Media Office

RTA's Smart Monitoring System delivers excellent results in tracking driving school user behaviour
The Smart Monitoring System launched by Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) to track the behaviour of instructors and trainees using AI-powered cameras in driving school vehicles has delivered remarkable results. Developed by the Licensing Activities Monitoring Department at RTA's Licensing Agency, the system has monitored 1,734,790 training sessions for 245,764 trainees over the past seven months, a 14-fold increase compared to the same period last year. These outcomes reflect RTA's continued drive to realise its vision of becoming the World Leader in Seamless and Sustainable Mobility and underscore its sustained commitment to digital transformation and innovation in monitoring practices. The new system, which is run by RTA's Licensing Intelligent Operations Centre and through the inspectors' smart tablet, has also reduced inspection time from 20 minutes to just one minute, while enabling a fivefold increase in recorded violations. This positions it as a comprehensive monitoring tool that enhances training service quality and upholds the highest safety standards. The system uses technologies that enable real-time, round-the-clock monitoring of instructors and trainees through the installation of smart cameras in driving school vehicles. These cameras are equipped with artificial intelligence (machine learning) and computer vision, which enhance the effectiveness of supervision during training sessions. The system automatically detects violations such as mobile phone use by instructors or trainees, failure to fasten seat belts, leaving designated training zones, failure to wear the prescribed uniform or maintain professional appearance, and distractions including eating, drinking, sleeping while driving, or other distractions. The Smart Monitoring System for observing the behaviour of driving school vehicle users marks a fundamental shift in field monitoring concepts. It aligns with the vision and strategic direction of Dubai's government in digital transformation and innovation, while fostering a safe and professional training environment that prepares drivers to the highest standards. Additional innovative features are being introduced to the system this year, including predictive analytics and the integration of actual instructor performance data with licensing and permit systems. These enhancements aim to establish a more robust and integrated monitoring framework. Companies play a vital role in complying with all regulations and requirements to ensure a safe and efficient working environment. RTA collaborates closely with strategic partners to deliver safe and reliable training services, recognising that adherence to safety and security standards is a core responsibility. The new system presents a real opportunity to reinforce awareness of regulatory compliance, supporting improved performance and greater alignment with required standards across all training institutes.

RTA Initiates Comprehensive Campaign for Trailer Safety Inspections
Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) launched a targeted inspection campaign in early 2025 to improve trailer safety across the emirate's roads, uncovering over a hundred technical issues in the process. The initiative, titled Trailer Safety , was conducted by the Licensing Activities Monitoring Department as part of RTA's broader mission to enhance road safety and ensure compliance with technical regulations. Between January and March, inspectors carried out 2,638 checks on heavy vehicles at key locations, including Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road and Emirates Road. Of these, 177 trailers were specifically examined for adherence to critical safety standards. The inspections focused on tyre conditions, brake efficiency, lighting systems, license validity, and driver permits. The campaign revealed 134 technical faults and resulted in 88 violations, with common issues ranging from unfit tyres and defective lights to missing reflective stickers and improper cargo loading. Ahmed Mahboob, CEO of the RTA's Licensing Agency, reaffirmed the authority's commitment to routine inspections, highlighting their role in preventing safety risks linked to inadequate vehicle maintenance. He emphasized that the campaign aligns with the agency's annual plan to promote compliance and raise awareness through modern outreach methods. 'This initiative is part of our ongoing efforts to ensure road safety by targeting key sectors within the transport system,' Mahboob said. The campaign underscores the RTA's continued focus on reducing traffic risks through proactive enforcement and public education, particularly within the heavy vehicle segment, which plays a critical role in Dubai's transport infrastructure.
