"The First Homosexuals" art exhibit at Wrightwood 659 in Lincoln Park explores early modern LGBTQ+ identity

Today, it's known as the LGBTQ community, but years ago, members were just called "homosexuals". Even though the term might seem outdated, the creation of the word was a major shift in the way people thought about sexuality. A new art exhibit in Lincoln Park called "The First Homosexuals" explores LGBTQ history. "This is that pivotal turning point, where the terms homosexual and heterosexual are first coined," Johnny Wilson, assistant curator of "The First Homosexuals," said. The first time the words "homosexual" and "heterosexual" were used in print, they appeared in a letter written by a European activist in the 1860s. The words established sexuality as an identity, not just an action. The collection of art shows people in the gay, lesbian, and trans community in the years following the creation of the term. "It's about how art captures that transition," Wilson said. And the meaning of that art was often coded. For example, there is a sculpture from French actress and artist Sarah Bernhardt. "She's depicting herself as a chimera. She has the wings of a bat," Wilson said. "For her, a bat was a symbol of her lesbian dissonance. The exhibit features hundreds of pieces from collections worldwide. It took staffers like Wilson years to put it together. He says it's much more than just an exhibit. "I feel like this is my version of protest," He said. "In this political moment, at a time when queer and trans are facing attacks, it's simply surreal and invaluable to share this history. Wilson says he's tried to get other museums in the U.S. to show the exhibit as well. But so far, there have been no takers. "Museums are afraid of doing exhibits like this, this is the uncensored history of queerness," He said. "This is an exhibit that at times challenges you, but that's what art is all about." The exhibit runs through July 26 at the gallery Wrightwood 659. A book on the exhibit will come out next month.

Grand Forks police arrest driver after pursuit through Lincoln Park that later ended near downtown

May 7—GRAND FORKS — A driver was arrested after a chase through Grand Forks that went through Lincoln Park before finally ending near downtown. The incident started at approximately 6:20 p.m. on Wednesday, May 7, when an officer observed a vehicle driving eastbound on DeMers Avenue at a dangerously high rate of speed, according to a report sent to the media by the Grand Forks Police Department. When the officer activated his lights and siren and tried to catch up to the vehicle, the 2003 Chevy Silverado passed through the intersection of DeMers and Washington Street. It eventually went through residential neighborhoods and into Lincoln Park. After the chase went north on Cherry Street, police were able to use a maneuver to stop the fleeing vehicle in the 400 block of First Avenue South. According to the GFPD report, "officers then performed a high-risk traffic stop on the individuals inside the vehicle and detained three subjects." The driver, Martin Romo, 22, of North Carolina, was arrested and charged with reckless driving, reckless endangerment, fleeing in a motor vehicle and attempted assault on a law enforcement officer. The passengers were released without charges. There were no injuries.

Royal Caribbean reveals new dining and entertainment for Star of the Seas

Royal Caribbean on Tuesday revealed details about new entertainment and dining aboard Star of the Seas, the line's second Icon-class ship debuting this August. Like sister Icon of the Seas, the Star will have a supper club concept. The upcoming one, Lincoln Park Supper Club, will have a Chicago theme (the Empire Supper Club on the Icon has an old New York theme). Royal Caribbean said the specialty restaurant "will serve up a multicourse dining journey inspired by 1930s Chicago." Royal Caribbean said live jazz music will be paired with "sophisticated cocktails and curated dishes that nod back to iconic dining spots in the Windy City, from the Chez Paree nightclub to the famed Pump Room." At the AquaDome Market, a food hall exclusive to the Icon class, there will be five food stands -- three of them new. One will serve smoked pulled pork and beef brisket. Another will feature Southeast Asian dishes like pad thai and beef panang, and another South American specialties like empanadas and arepas. The Star of the Seas will debut on Aug. 20, departing on a preview cruise from Port Canaveral. Royal Caribbean describes it as "a revved-up aqua show featuring athletic artists, synchronized swimmers, dancers and slackliners for an action-packed show of thrilling stunts, cutting-edge tech and immersive visuals." Also in the AquaTheater will be "Pirates & Mermaids," combining dance, artistic swimming and diving, all set to a "comedic vibe." Royal Caribbean said the pirates meet the mermaids, "culminating in a heartwarming lesson about the true treasure of life." At the Absolute Zero ice arena, "SOL" will star Royal Caribbean's largest ice-skating cast. The all-new ice show follows the sun's path, complete with "mind-blowing stunts and visuals," says Royal Caribbean. An all-new Royal Caribbean production, "Create" will be performed at the Royal Theater. Royal Caribbean said the show follows the "soul-searching journey of a curious robot, KRE-8 -- harnessing song, dance and visual arts." Royal Caribbean previously announced the the Star's headline show will be "Back to the Future: The Musical." The line said the shows songs will be played by the largest orchestra at sea, and that the audience can anticipate "surprise Royal Caribbean twists." The Star of the Seas will debut on Aug. 20, sailing a preview cruise from its homeport, Port Canaveral.
