Gkids Takes North America For Cannes & Annecy Title ‘Little Amélie Or The Character Of Rain'
EXCLUSIVE: Oscar-winning animation producer and distributor Gkids has acquired North American rights for Little Amélie Or The Character Of Rain, following its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in May. Titled Amélie et la Métaphysique des tubes in French, the work is the feature directorial debut of French filmmakers Maïlys Vallade and Liane-Cho Han. The feature is adapted from The Character of Rain, the autobiographical novel of award-winning Belgian writer Amélie Nothomb, which is inspired by her own early years in Japan. The young protagonist Amèlie finds the world a perplexing, peaceful mystery until a miraculous encounter with chocolate ignites her wild sense of curiosity. As she develops a deep attachment to her family's housekeeper, Nishio-san, Amélie discovers the wonders of nature as well as the emotional truths hidden beneath the surface of her family's idyllic life as foreigners in post-war Japan. Vallade previously took storyboard artist credits on the Oscar-nominated feature I Lost My Body and Calamity, A Childhood of Martha Jane Cannary, while Han was animation director on the latter film and Long Way North. 'The emotional intelligence and visual creativity of Little Amélie or the Character of Rain stunned us,' said Rodney Uhler, Gkid Director of Acquisitions and Development. 'The film is an engrossing story of how a young person grapples with the confusing reality of the world she's brought into, but her discoveries will resonate with audiences of every age. The film feels like a beautiful gift from Vallade, Han and their team, and we cannot wait for audiences to discover its magic.' The deal was negotiated between Uhler and Jason Bressand of Goodfellas Animation. The feature is produced by Nidia Santiago and Edwina Liard for Ikki Films, and, Claire La Combe and Henri Magalon for Maybe Movies. Screenwriters were Han, Aude Py, Vallade, and Eddine Noël, who is also Art Director, while Ludovic Versace is the editor. The French-language voice cast features Loïse Charpentier, Victoria Grobois, Laetitia Coryn, Yumi Fujimori, Marc Arnaud, and Emmylou Homs. Nicolas Cage's ‘The Carpenter's Son' Lands at Magnolia
Magnolia Pictures has picked up the U.S. rights to the Nicolas Cage-led movie, The Carpenter's Son, ahead of the Cannes Film Festival. The horror pic, now in post-production, is directed by Lotfy Nathan and tells the childhood story of Jesus Christ, with Cage playing The Carpenter, Noah Jupe plays the Son and his Honey Boy co-star FKA Twigs is the Mother. Inspired by the Gospel of Thomas, the film, also written by Nathan, centers on a family hiding out in Roman Egypt. Known only as 'the Boy', the son is driven to doubt by another mysterious child and rebels against his guardian, the Carpenter. As the Boy exercises his own power, he and his family become the target of natural and divine horrors. Goodfellas, Anonymous Content and WME Independent are handling sales of The Carpenter's Son in Cannes. 'With The Carpenter's Son, Lotfy Nathan has delivered a genre-bending spectacle that defies expectations at every turn,' Magnolia Pictures co-CEOs Eamonn Bowles and Dori Begley said in a joint statement on Friday. The Carpenter's Son has Julie Viez sharing the producer credits with Alex Hughes, Riccardo Maddalosso and Cage on behalf of Saturn Films. David Levine and Nick Shumaker executive produce along with Noémie Devide, Jennifer Venditti, Nathan, Theo Vieljeux and Eugene Kotlyarenko. The distribution deal was negotiated by Magnolia's senior vp of acquisitions John Von Thaden, with AC Independent, a division of AC Studios, WME Independent, Goodfellas and Feig Finkel LLP acting for the filmmakers. Cannes Late Additions Include Eugene Jarecki's Julian Assange Doc ‘The Six Billion Dollar Man'
The Cannes Film Festival has added a handful of films to its official selection just days ahead of the 78th festival, which kicks off on Tuesday. Among the last-minute entries is Eugene Jarecki's Julian Assange documentary feature, The Six Billion Dollar Man, which will receive a special screening. The Six Billion Dollar Man had been set to screen at Sundance this year, but was pulled weeks before the festival with Jarecki saying he needed to incorporate 'significant recent and unexpected developments' into the film before releasing it. The film, starring Jackson Yee (Better Days) and Shu Qi (The Assassin), is being shopped at the Cannes market by Les Films du Losange. Other 11th-hour additions were Martin Bourboulon's 13 jours, 13 nuits, which will play Out Of Competition, and Ma Fere by Lise Akoka and Romane Gueret, which will screen as a Cannes Premiere. The 78th Cannes Film Festival runs May 13-24.
