It was unveiled as a Special Screening in Cannes and will be back on the festival circuit next week, playing in competition at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival.
The feature is adapted from The Character of Rain, the autobiographical novel of award-winning Belgian writer Amélie Nothomb, which is inspired by her own early years in Japan.
The young protagonist Amèlie finds the world a perplexing, peaceful mystery until a miraculous encounter with chocolate ignites her wild sense of curiosity. As she develops a deep attachment to her family's housekeeper, Nishio-san, Amélie discovers the wonders of nature as well as the emotional truths hidden beneath the surface of her family's idyllic life as foreigners in post-war Japan.
Vallade previously took storyboard artist credits on the Oscar-nominated feature I Lost My Body and Calamity, A Childhood of Martha Jane Cannary, while Han was animation director on the latter film and Long Way North.
'The emotional intelligence and visual creativity of Little Amélie or the Character of Rain stunned us,' said Rodney Uhler, Gkid Director of Acquisitions and Development.
'The film is an engrossing story of how a young person grapples with the confusing reality of the world she's brought into, but her discoveries will resonate with audiences of every age. The film feels like a beautiful gift from Vallade, Han and their team, and we cannot wait for audiences to discover its magic.'
The deal was negotiated between Uhler and Jason Bressand of Goodfellas Animation.
The feature is produced by Nidia Santiago and Edwina Liard for Ikki Films, and, Claire La Combe and Henri Magalon for Maybe Movies. Screenwriters were Han, Aude Py, Vallade, and Eddine Noël, who is also Art Director, while Ludovic Versace is the editor.
The French-language voice cast features Loïse Charpentier, Victoria Grobois, Laetitia Coryn, Yumi Fujimori, Marc Arnaud, and Emmylou Homs.

The Nintendo Switch 2 Should Get Its Most Important App Soon
Switch 2 The Nintendo Switch 2 is out and has sold millions of copies already. Its game roster is mostly reprised hits, with only a few truly new entries (Mario Kart World), but owners also want the handheld to be able to do more than just play games. As it stands, there is no YouTube app on the Nintendo Switch 2, mirroring the issue that the Switch 1 had for a long while. The original Switch was launched on March 3, 2017 and it did not get the much-requested YouTube app until November 8, 2018, over a year later. Nintendo and Google are apparently both trying to avoid that kind of lengthy wait this time around. The YouTube team app responded to a fan asking about the issue, and got a response: I'm not sure a list of other devices that play YouTube is helpful here. The timeline here is 'soon,' which I take to mean less than a year like we saw with the Switch 1. I am amazed that Nintendo has been making this console for probably half a decade and once again it launched without key dedicated video apps, YouTube included. I'm not clear on how they can get CDPR to tireless work on making Cyberpunk 2077 work well on the Switch but they can't figure out how to get YouTube or Hulu on the system for launch. It's bizarre. This is one of those things where I think we give Nintendo too much slack about, the fact that the console can launch with almost no actually new games and not even a ton of standard apps that it should have for day one. But hey, it's Nintendo and Nintendo always gets passes. Hopefully we hear more about this soon from a source other than what a help account bot, but I have to believe it's a priority on at least Google's side, if not Nintendo's. There's no way it can take as long as it did last time, right? Right? Follow me on Twitter, YouTube, Bluesky and Instagram. Pick up my sci-fi novels the Herokiller series and The Earthborn Trilogy.

The ‘Legend Of Zelda' Movie Has Already Been Delayed, Two Years Before Release
The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess It still may not be wide knowledge that The Legend of Zelda is getting a live-action filming in the coming years, one directed by Maze Runner veteran and Zelda superfan Wes Ball. Despite it not being out for two years, the film has already announced a delay. Albeit not a very long one. Here's what Shigeru Miyamoto himself said about what was happening: This seems a little odd, as the old release date was March 26, 2027 and the new date is just a month and a half after that. I'm not clear on what the issue is where you'd push for such a short delay this far out from the movie actually releasing, which includes zero promotion or even casting announcements yet. I wanted to check if this was trying to dodge some sort of other big movie releasing then. March 26 is the currently scheduled date for Godzilla x Kong: Supernova, the latest in the MonsterVerse series, a blockbuster string of films that has done well. Avengers: Secret Wars was recently moved and will be out in December of that year rather than midway through. But no, it doesn't really feel like this is just MonsterVerse dodging, and I don't take Miyamoto for a liar or obfuscator. Again, we know almost nothing about the movie other than its director and now its release date. It has always felt like a risk compared to say, Nintendo's recent Super Mario Bros. Movie blockbuster that performed incredibly well and stayed true to the cartoony aesthetic of the games. While I can understand how Zelda may be better suited for live-action, it still feels like it could go either way. LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA - APRIL 20: Hunter Schafer attends the HBO Max FYC event for 'Euphoria' at ... More Academy Museum of Motion Pictures on April 20, 2022 in Los Angeles, California. (Photo by Emma McIntyre/WireImage) A recent news item here was a report that popular fan-cast Hunter Schaefer was being looked at to play Zelda, because well, she really looks like Zelda. But this instantly resulted in a slew of unfortunately expected transphobia, and a question is if the film would in fact cast an iconic role with a trans actress given that it would almost certainly overwhelm the entire conversation about the film indefinitely. That's the unfortunate state of the media landscape. I do believe this film will come out and not get stuck in development hell like other projects, given that Nintendo is very much interested in multimedia IP expansion these days. But I'm not quite sure what to make of this oddly short delay two years out. Follow me on Twitter, YouTube, Bluesky and Instagram. Nintendo Is Delaying the ‘Legend of Zelda' Movie, but Only a Little Bit
Hoping that you'll still be oohing and ahhing over your new Switch 2, Nintendo has a teensy little bit of bad news: the Legend of Zelda movie is being delayed. The good news is that it's not for that long. Taking to Twitter rather than the Nintendo Today app this time, Shigeru Miyamoto released a brief statement confirming that Wes Ball's live-action Zelda movie will now release just over a month later than planned, on May 7, 2027. This is Miyamoto. For production reasons, we are changing the release date of the live-action film of The Legend of Zelda to May 7, 2027. It will be some weeks later than the release timing we originally announced, and we will take the extra time to make the film as good as it… — 任天堂株式会社 (@Nintendo) June 9, 2025 'For production reasons, we are changing the release date of the live-action film of The Legend of Zelda to May 7, 2027. It will be some weeks later than the release timing we originally announced, and we will take the extra time to make the film as good as it can be,' the statement reads in part. 'Thank you for your patience.' The release date, and now this changed one, is pretty much all we've definitively heard about the Zelda movie since its shock announcement from Nintendo and Sony Pictures back in November 2023. Although recently rumors have begun to swirl about potential casting, so much of just how one of the most beloved gaming series of all time is going to make the leap to live-action (outside of the occasional funky TV ad, that is) remains to be seen. We'll bring you more on Sony and Nintendo's plans for the Zelda movie as and when we learn them.
