It was unveiled as a Special Screening in Cannes and will be back on the festival circuit next week, playing in competition at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival.
The feature is adapted from The Character of Rain, the autobiographical novel of award-winning Belgian writer Amélie Nothomb, which is inspired by her own early years in Japan.
The young protagonist Amèlie finds the world a perplexing, peaceful mystery until a miraculous encounter with chocolate ignites her wild sense of curiosity. As she develops a deep attachment to her family's housekeeper, Nishio-san, Amélie discovers the wonders of nature as well as the emotional truths hidden beneath the surface of her family's idyllic life as foreigners in post-war Japan.
Vallade previously took storyboard artist credits on the Oscar-nominated feature I Lost My Body and Calamity, A Childhood of Martha Jane Cannary, while Han was animation director on the latter film and Long Way North.
'The emotional intelligence and visual creativity of Little Amélie or the Character of Rain stunned us,' said Rodney Uhler, Gkid Director of Acquisitions and Development.
'The film is an engrossing story of how a young person grapples with the confusing reality of the world she's brought into, but her discoveries will resonate with audiences of every age. The film feels like a beautiful gift from Vallade, Han and their team, and we cannot wait for audiences to discover its magic.'
The deal was negotiated between Uhler and Jason Bressand of Goodfellas Animation.
The feature is produced by Nidia Santiago and Edwina Liard for Ikki Films, and, Claire La Combe and Henri Magalon for Maybe Movies. Screenwriters were Han, Aude Py, Vallade, and Eddine Noël, who is also Art Director, while Ludovic Versace is the editor.
The French-language voice cast features Loïse Charpentier, Victoria Grobois, Laetitia Coryn, Yumi Fujimori, Marc Arnaud, and Emmylou Homs.

‘Super Robot Wars Y' Brings Back Some Fan Favorites With New DLC

In a new DLC trailer for Super Robot Wars Y, we get to see some familiar series return as well as a few surprising new ones. Specifically, the first DLC pack contains Galaxy Cyclone Braiger, The Big O, and Fuuto PI: The Portrait of Kamen Rider Skull. Whereas the second DLC pack includes Kotetsu Jeeg, Getter Robo: The Jet-Black Drifter, and The Brave of Legend Da-Garn. The big surprise is Kamen Rider, but I'm all for it. Some people don't think that live-action tokusatsu shows count as mecha, but I've been a big fan of Juspion for years, and that has the mighty Daileon as the main hero's spaceship that transforms into a giant robot. That aside, having classics like Braiger and Jeeg is also great. The last time I remember seeing Jeeg in a Super Robot Wars game was Alpha 3, which really needs a modern HD remaster. Then there's The Big O, which was a big part of the Super Robot Wars Z games, and is just a really cool series all around anyway. Time to Go: Japan pro board game player retires at 98

Japan's oldest professional player of the board game Go retired on Wednesday aged 98, saying that she can no longer handle "six hours without a break". Go is a strategy game considered to be even more complex than chess and involves players placing black and white stones at points on a square wooden table. Kazuko Sugiuchi turned professional in 1948 and won her first title 11 years later, before going on to win the prestigious Women's Meijin Championship four times in a row. She became Japan's oldest professional player in April last year, breaking the record previously held by her late husband Masao. She is set to be promoted to the rank of ninth dan after retiring, becoming the first woman to reach that level. She said the gruelling sessions at the board were the reason why she is calling it quits. "I have always worked hard with the belief that Go is an art and a lifelong pursuit, but I have decided that playing six hours without a break is no longer possible," she was reported as saying by national broadcaster NHK. "I would like to express my deepest gratitude to everyone who has shown me kindness over the 80 years since I first aspired to be a Go player." Go is especially popular in Japan, South Korea and China, and was played at the Asian Games in Hangzhou in 2023. amk/aph/pst

‘Gundam GQuuuuuuX' Director Thinks The ‘Gundam' Saga Has A Decade Left

In a new interview with Kazuya Tsurumaki, director of Gundam GQuuuuuuX, he talks about how Gundam as a series has about a decade left, and he's probably right. In the interview over on Yahoo Japan, picked up by those nice people at Automaton, Tsurumaki talks about how he thinks that Gundam has a limited future and may only have a decade or so left. Specifically, he thinks the following. I don't think those kids understand what it means to pilot a robot. For now, the generations that grew up admiring bikes and cars are still active, but in another ten years, even the Gundam series might not survive. I had already felt this while working on Evangelion, but there is a need to update the meaning of reason as to why this is the case is that he thinks mecha is not all that popular, which actually goes against what we're seeing in terms of games, toys, model kits, and everything else mecha-related selling like crazy across multiple demographics. However, he is onto something here, but it's more to do with the fact that Gundam itself has become stale, rather than the mecha genre as a whole. While Gundam's revenue has doubled in the last decade, that is down to the fact that pretty much all of the saga is now finally available in the West, and there is a new sturdy distribution setup for kits and merchandise internationally. No single series has been the major 'breakthrough', despite what some vocal Western fans claim, but rather the simple availability of the various host anime and their media mix progeny. This new success has made the management behind Gundam cautious in the new works they greenlight, because they don't want to rock the boat. The issue here is that Gundam is a complex and nuanced saga, which is now aging out due to the original generation that watched the first Mobile Suit Gundam getting older. In fact, GQuuuuuuX was a great example of this, as its popularity was split heavily between Japan and the Western fanbase. Mainly because it turned out to be a multiverse-infused nostalgia trip. Naturally, the older Japanese fans loved this (as did I), but the newer Western fans felt left out. What Gundam needs is a new and entirely fresh take by a team of fiercely creative people, without risk-averse micromanagement from Bandai Namco. Otherwise, it will just age out like all the older anime before it. Gundam GQuuuuuuX is now streaming worldwide via Amazon Prime me on X, Facebook and YouTube. I also manage Mecha Damashii and am currently featured in the Giant Robots exhibition currently touring Japan.
