Sam Fender Recruits 'Adolescence' Star and Director for 'Little Bit Closer' Music Video — Watch!
Sam Fender reunited Adolescence actor Owen Cooper and director Philip Barantini for his latest music video. On Friday, May 9, the British singer-songwriter, 31, shared the visual for his track "Little Bit Closer." The music video, which was shot the Lake District of North-West England, features Cooper, 15, and a group of friends on a camping trip where the Netflix crime-drama star questions his faith. Fender previously collaborated with Barantini, 44, in 2021, working alongside him and fellow Adolescence star and co-writer Stephen Graham for the visual for "Spit of You." 'It's so great to be working with Phil [Barantini] again," the "Will We Talk?" musician said in a statement. "I had no doubt he was the right director for this piece." Fender then called the director's video for "Spit of You" his "favorite." "Phil called to say he'd asked Owen if he'd like to be in the video, and that Owen was keen," added Fender. "I was elated that he could do it after seeing his incredible performance in Adolescence." In a statement, Barantini discussed his experience working with Fender and Cooper on 'Little Bit Closer." "To have the opportunity to direct another video for Sam was an immediate yes - an absolute no-brainer for me!" he said. "Not only is Sam an incredible artist but he's a beautiful human and a great friend! Also, the opportunity to direct Owen again so soon after Adolescence was an absolute joy!" is now available in the Apple App Store! But Fender is really just enjoying the ride. 'The main reason for doing it is because you love music. Everything else that comes with it can f--- off," he said. You can look away from the school, you can look away from the police station, you can look away from the counselling, you can look away from the family. That was a thrilling thing.' Adolescence star Owen Cooper makes appearance in major musician's music video
Owen Cooper's next surprising career move has been revealed after he was cast in a Sam Fender music video. Earlier this year the 15-year-old made his acting debut in the Netflix series Adolescence, which flew up the charts and became the most watched UK series ever on the streaming platform. The critically acclaimed crime drama starred Stephen Graham as Eddie Miller, a father whose family is shattered after his 13-year-old son Jamie (Owen) is accused of murder. Many praised Owen's performance, with one critic saying it was 'the best debut ever seen by a child actor' while viewers said he was already in line for an Oscar. While he's recently been filming Emerald Fennell's adaptation of Wuthering Heights alongside Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi, Owen is also about to appear in the music video for Sam's single Little Bit Closer. Released in February, the song is off Sam's album People Watching, which he said explored 'colourful stories and observations of everyday characters living their everyday, but often extraordinary, lives'. Overnight he shared a teaser of the music video for the song, which shows a young boy covered in a blanket looking out over a lake, captioning it 'I get a little bit closer'. However, many people quickly released exactly who it was. 'Is that the kid out of Adolescence?' Carmel questioned. 'Is that Owen Cooper?' Cal commented. 'OWEN COOPER LET GOOOOOOOO,' a Sam Fender fan account added. Jumping into the comments section too, Adolescence's director Philip Barantini posted a wink face with a love heart confirming Owen's role in the music video. Meanwhile Owen later reposted a fan re-sharing the clip and tagging him. Earlier this year Sam also enlisted another actor to appear in a music video for a song from his latest album – with Fleabag's Andrew Scott portraying a drifter on a solitary journey. Describing his involvement in the video, Andrew called the song a 'masterpiece'. After initially having aspirations of becoming a footballer, after taking acting classes up as a 'hobby', Owen previously said was hooked. 'I only really wanted to start acting a couple of years ago,' he told Variety. More Trending 'It's not been long. I grew up wanting to be a footballer. I don't know what it was that made me want to do it, but I just wanted to do it.' 'And then I went to lessons with The Drama MOB in Manchester. And the lessons were just hourly lessons on a Tuesday where we'd get a piece of script and just read it off. But I was just doing it for a hobby and didn't expect much from it. But with them, I got a self-tape request for 'Adolescence.' I obviously took it a lot more seriously. And I just took it on the chin really, and just did it.' The young actor, who has been dubbed the 'Lionel Messi of the acting game' by his co-star Ashley Walters is also being put forward by the team behind the show to be nominated for an Emmy award in the upcoming campaign.
