Adolescence star appears in new Sam Fender video

RTÉ News08-05-2025

Sam Fender has reunited Adolescence director Philip Barantini with Owen Cooper, the young star of the hit Netflix drama, in the new video for his single, Little Bit Closer.
Fender previously worked with Barantini and Adolescence star and co-writer Stephen Graham in 2021 for the video to Spit Of You.
Shot in the Lake District in the north-west of England, the video for Little Bit Closer follows Cooper and a group of friends on a camping trip, where Cooper's character quietly "contemplates questions of faith".
Speaking about the video, Fender, who plays two dates in Ireland this Summer, said, 'It's so great to be working with Phil again, I had no doubt he was the right director for this piece, his video for Spit of You was my favourite.
"Phil called to say he'd asked Owen if he'd like to be in the video, and that Owen was keen. I was elated that he could do it after seeing his incredible performance in Adolescence."
Barantini added, "To have the opportunity to direct another video for Sam was an immediate yes - an absolute no-brainer for me!
"Not only is Sam an incredible artist but he's a beautiful human and a great friend! Also, the opportunity to direct Owen again so soon after Adolescence was an absolute joy!"
Fender released his third album, People Watching, earlier this year and plays VITAL @ Boucher Road Playing Fields, Belfast on 28 August and Electric Picnic Festival, Stradbally on 30 August.

Katie Nicholl, who is Vanity Fair's royal correspondent, told The Sun's Speaking to The Sun's Royal Editor Matt Wilkinson, the commentator explained: "Anyone who knows Harry is aware he's always wanted a way out of the Royal Family. "He's said multiple times on the record that he wished he'd never been born a prince. "I think he really is living the life he wants to now. It's very, very sad that it's played out the way it has.' "We intend to step back as 'senior' members of the Royal Family and work to become financially independent, while continuing to fully support Her Majesty The Queen. "It is with your encouragement, particularly over the last few years, that we feel prepared to make this adjustment. "We now plan to balance our time between the United Kingdom and North America, continuing to honour our duty to The Queen, the Commonwealth, and our patronages. "This geographic balance will enable us to raise our son with an appreciation for the royal tradition into which he was born, while also providing our family with the space to focus on the next chapter, including the launch of our new charitable entity.'

Stephen Graham has emergency surgery on plane after terrifying mystery bleeding

Stephen Graham has opened up about the "scary" emergency operation he underwent while on a plane. Appearing on Late Night with Seth Meyers, the Adolescence actor spoke of a medical emergency that took place the last time he touched down in the States. After the host asked about his previous traumatic flight, Stephen responded by saying it was "a hell of an experience". He elaborated: "Look, I'm of a certain age, you know what I mean? You're a gentleman, like myself. I don't know; once you get over like 45, you tend to go to the toilet quite a lot of times." His storytelling made the crowd laugh and had viewers wondering where this story was going exactly, Mirror UK reports. Graham went on to explain how many people opt to have a catheter fitted, which is something he himself had opted for. Ultimately, it was supposed to aid him in his bathroom habits, and he explained that after "three to four months", you should be experiencing "fewer trips to the toilet". Although the Netflix star found himself in a bit of an unusual situation on a flight 10,000 feet in the air when everything had been fine, right up until that point. He tells the late-night host about drinking water on the flight as usual, going to the toilet and suddenly not being able to pee. "I'm like, Oh, this doesn't feel right," he told Myers. "I knew I had to, and then silly Stephen thought, 'Oh, well, if I go back to my seat and I just keep drinking water, at some point it will happen.'" After going back to his seat and some time passing, he went back to the toilet and was shocked by what happened next. Graham said: "Long story short, all of a sudden I went, but it was just pure blood," adding that it was "very scary". He further explained that he couldn't stop the sheer amount of blood and began to have a "slight panic attack". He admitted that the entire situation had made him quite emotional, but luck was on his side, as he remembers taking a selfie with a fan before the flight, who just happened to be a doctor. "He had another friend with him, who was a surgeon," the actor explained. "So I'm there, and I explain. He's like, 'Ok,' and the surgeon, Dr Haji, says, 'We can work this out.'" The entire area he was in was sterilised, and a catheter was pulled out of an emergency box. To put it bluntly, Graham said: "I drop my kecks, I get on the couch, and he performs a catheter operation there and then." And, once it was over and done with, the adolescence star took a selfie with the doctors and crew on board to remember the moment.
