Ruben Amorim urged to block £30m transfer and hold crunch talks after Benjamin Sesko deal

Dimitar Berbatov believes Benjamin Sesko 's arrival at Manchester United provides the competition Ruben Amorim should desire with Rasmus Hojlund. The Danish striker endured a lacklustre season with the Red Devils last term, scoring just four Premier League goals. As a result, Ruben Amorim has wasted very little time in bolstering his front line this summer, securing the services of Matheus Cunha from Wolves in a £62.5million move, and Bryan Mbeumo from Brentford in a package worth up to £71m. However, it now appears as though United will see RB Leipzig sensation Sesko also join the ranks at Old Trafford. The 22-year-old has been a highly sought-after prospect this summer as a result of impressing in the Bundesliga, with the Red Devils and Newcastle United embroiled in a tug-of-war for his signature. And it now appears as though United have walked away victorious in their pursuit, with Sesko landing in the UK for a medical on Friday after a deal totalling £73.7m was agreed. And as a result, Hojlund will now have stiff competition for his place. It's something that Berbatov, who scored 56 goals and provided 27 assists during his time under Sir Alex Ferguson between 2008 and 2012, believes may allow the youngster to flourish if he adopts the right mentality. Speaking exclusively to Mirror Football about what the arrival of Sesko means, the LiveScore and LiveScore Bet European Brand Ambassador said: "I am excited with him going to United, but at the same time I am a bit cautious because [Joshua] Zirkzee and Hojlund were performing great in their previous clubs. "I watched how they moved, how they bullied defenders, how they scored goals, but then going to the Premier League, they found it difficult to adjust. And the stats speak for themselves, right? Three goals, four goals, for a striker you are going to be disappointed with yourself. "So it's not easy, and is it the speed? Is it the new team? Is it the new environment? Is it most of the time the expectation people put on you because when you are number nine of United, you need to score goals, you need to perform, this is your job, this is your job description. "Of course, there is so much more to being number nine. Dropping down deep, getting the ball, then releasing your team-mates. Running of course, defending when you need to defend, release the spaces for the other team-mates. It's a lot more to [being a] number nine these days, but ultimately it's about the goals you score. "It was difficult campaign for them and it's a difficult period that they are going through, and now with another striker coming in, of course the competition is going to be high. When you buy a striker now you start to think, 'Well am I going to play? Is my place in United? Am I still belonging here? Do I need to start looking for a club?' "Or maybe then you start thinking, 'Alright, I like the competition. Now I'm going to show you. Now I'm going to fight for my place. Now I'm going to bring the fire.' "So it's a two-way scenario. You choose the one I said or the other. So let's see what they are going to bring to the table as well." Berbatov also explained that Amorim must make Hojlund feel wanted and valued should he hope to get the best out of him in the future, and that competition could turn out to be positive for the youngster. He added: "You always want the competition, but at the same time, as a striker, because we think we're special, you need to feel welcome and wanted in the team, by the coach, by everybody. "Then your motivation is going to be higher and your self-esteem is going to be higher. It's a lot of factors. It's not easy, but it's all in the head." For that to happen, Amorim would need to block any incoming transfer interest for Hojlund as the summer transfer window starts to draw to a close. At present, United are willing to let Hojlund part ways with Old Trafford for around £30m, despite the striker insisting that he wants to stay and fight for his place. With Hojlund already on Berbatov's way of thinking, it's up to Amorim to change the board's stance on the player to see if healthy competition truly allows him to flourish in a fresh season. However, it now appears AC Milan are set to approach the Red Devils to take him to the San Siro on loan for the new season. A change of scenery could also, of course, help benefit Hojlund as he looks to find his footing again, especially since he has previously excelled in Serie A. The youngster scored 10 goals in 34 appearances for Atalanta before United signed him in a £72m deal back in 2023, and a temporary move to Milan could allow him to develop his game and return stronger than before next year. 'I know exactly what Alexander Isak's thinking – these are his Liverpool and Newcastle dilemmas'

Alexander Isak is still wanted by Liverpool, and it has left the Newcastle United striker in limbo, while one Premier League legend knows exactly what he's going through Dimitar Berbatov believes Alexander Isak will be contemplating more than just the future of his career as Liverpool continue to target the Newcastle United striker. To say he has impressed since arriving from Real Sociedad in 2022 would be an understatement. ‌ Isak is one of the best centre-forwards in Europe, and his finishing backs that up, having scored 62 goals in 109 appearances for the Magpies. Isak has also been instrumental in helping the club finish fourth, seventh and fifth in the Premier League over the past three seasons, not to mention scoring the winner in the 2025 Carabao Cup final. ‌ However, the 25-year-old's future on Tyneside has been clouded in speculation this summer, as the Swede made clear he wished to explore his options away from Newcastle, with Premier League champions Liverpool the only realistic destination for Isak at present. ‌ According to Berbatov, who faced a similar situation when he left Tottenham Hotspur to play for Manchester United back in 2008 in a £30.75million move, Isak will have plenty on his mind, and he knows just what the player is going through. Speaking exclusively to Mirror Football, the LiveScore and LiveScore Bet European Brand Ambassador said: "I've been there. I've been in that situation as well, so for a striker or any star player of a team at one point or another, more often than not, it's going to come down to this. "Him wanting to leave if a bigger club comes after him. Of course, it's different because every individual, every player is different. Everybody thinks differently. But more times than not, when a big, big club comes for you, then you start thinking about trophies, about Champions League, about playing with the best, against the best. "Of course Newcastle is one of the best teams in England and I used to support them because when [Alan] Shearer was there raising his hand, and all the time it was great watching them. And even now it's entertaining, what they're doing. But when Liverpool comes after you, Man City, Real Madrid, Barca... you know one of the biggest teams in the world, then trust me, your head is going to go like this, thinking about it and imagining it. "'Oh my god the white shirt of Real Madrid,' you know? 'The red of Liverpool. Is this the next step of my development? So do I need to take it? What happens if I don't? Maybe I miss my opportunity and that's going to be it for me.' ‌ 'Of course, maybe the pay raise, more money, because football is business these days. So a lot of questions that I'm sure are going to Isak. Of course his agent around him, his family around him, friends, environment is also very important. Giving him opinions, guidance maybe, and it's going to come to a point, I don't know if that's the point now that we're seeing, where you say to the club, 'Look I've given enough, now it's time to move on.' "The club's maybe not going to react well, especially if they don't have the replacement in hand, so now they need to react quickly. Maybe they don't want to let you go, because they have high expectations of you for the next season. "I go through the team and then friction starts to happen. Then it becomes bigger, and bigger and bigger, and all like this until it reaches the point where everybody is angry and disappointed. You're speaking through the agents and not with the player, then you banish him to train alone or whatever. It's never a good thing, it's never a good thing and it pains me to see stuff like this." ‌ The now 44-year-old also highlighted how he faced a similar scenario when he joined United from Spurs in 2008, given how highly thought of he was at White Hart Lane at the time. He added: "I went through that thing. It was a difficult period as well. "I understand the player, I understand the club and I hope they will find the solution in the middle, a balanced one where everybody will be happy. Of course, the fans, some of them will be okay, the majority of them probably will not understand because this is the star player, the player who scored goals, the player who Newcastle gave the opportunity to show what he can do. ‌ "So it's never an easy thing and it's just a situation where honestly you don't want to be in. But again, understanding from a player point of view, I understand the team. But again, Harry Kane left Spurs, I left Spurs to go to United. "Many players are leaving their clubs to go to different clubs and the teams are always there. They will continue to do well. Newcastle, they will find a good replacement, they will continue to do well. So it's about finding the right answer." Liverpool have already approached Newcastle United for Isak with a bid of £110m, only to see it quickly rebuffed due to the Magpies' £150m valuation of their star man. However, it is thought that the Reds will continue to monitor Isak's situation closely as they approach the final few weeks of the summer transfer window. ‌ With regards to bolstering their own strike force this summer, Newcastle's outlook has been incredibly bleak thus far. The Magpies initially registered an interest in Eintracht Frankfurt sensation, Hugo Ekitike, only for the Frenchman to instead complete a £79m move to Liverpool. While talks for RB Leipzig's Benjamin Sesko appeared promising at first, the 22-year-old has instead jetted off to Manchester United to have a medical on Friday, where he is expected to complete a long-term deal. ‌ The club are now said to be interested in pursuing Chelsea's unsettled Nicolas Jackson, but they'll face stiff competition from Spurs in doing so should Richarlison leave the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in the coming weeks. for more information.

VA-TA-RA: LiveScore Bet now pays out on disallowed goals

The 2025-26 Premier League season is nearly upon us and, ahead of the new campaign, LiveScore Bet has unveiled a new, groundbreaking promotion it is offering for existing customers. With the bookmaker's new 'VAR Payout' promotion, punters will be paid out on all Premier League goalscorer bets, regardless of whether the goal stands or is ruled out by VAR. LiveScore Bet promotion gives added security to goalscorer bets To say VAR (video assistant referee) has been controversial since its introduction to the Premier League in 2019-20 is an understatement. Last season alone, 108 decisions were overturned by VAR reviews in the Premier League, with 47 of those leading to disallowed goals. Numbers refer to decisions, not points Source: ESPN. With this new feature from LiveScore Bet, though, whenever you place a single, multi or bet builder pre-match bet on a player to score in any Premier League match, you will be paid out even if your player scores and the goal is disallowed by VAR for whatever reason. This promotion will apply to selected goalscorer player markets only, such as first goalscorer, anytime goalscorer or betting on a player to score multiple goals. If you are betting on a player to score or assist, note that only the goalscorer part of the bet is covered by the VAR Payout promotion. Already a LiveScore Bet member? 2025 US Open Prediction, Best Bets & Golf Odds: Expect Strong DeChambeau Defence

US Open Betting Tips Bryson DeChambeau to finish in the top five - 19/10 Betfred Collin Morikawa to finish in the top 20 - 6/5 Bet365 The 125th US Open gets underway at the Oakmont Country Club in Pennsylvania on Thursday, where all eyes will be on defending champion Bryson DeChambeau, Masters champion Rory McIlroy and world number one Scottie Scheffler. Advertisement Unsurprisingly, the trio make up three of the top four in the US Open market on betting sites, along with Jon Rahm, who is priced at 13/1 just ahead of McIlroy. Scheffler has won three of his last four tournaments, including a five-shot win at last month's PGA Championship, and is the favourite at 3/1 while DeChambeau, who is looking to become the first player to win successive US Open titles since Brooks Koepka won in 2017 and 2018, is 15/2. This is the 10th time in history that the Oakmont Country Club has hosted the US Open, and the last time was nine years ago when Dustin Johnson picked up the first of his two major titles. The course, which is renowned as being one of the toughest in the US, thanks largely to its hazardous bunkers, has also hosted the US PGA Championship, US Women's Open and US Amateur Championship. US Open Betting Preview: Can Bryson go Back to Back? Backing DeChambeau to be there or thereabouts doesn't seem like a great risk and backing him at 15/2 is an interesting option, as is the 14/5 on offer for a top three finish with some golf betting sites. Advertisement He has finished in the top six in the last five American majors and has been first at some point in the week in his last five starts - so could this be the tournament when he finally converts? The reigning champion won't want to give up his title without a fight, but he knows the challenges of trying to defend his crown at the testing Oakmont Country Club. So rather than back DeChambeau for the win, a top five finish at US Open odds of 19/10 is the preference. US Open prediction 1: Bryson DeChambeau to finish in the top five - 19/10 Betfred Morikawa Can Tame Tricky Oakmont Collin Morikawa has only been on the pro tour for six years but he's already accrued seven tour wins, including the 2020 PGA Tour Championship and The Open Championship 11 months later. Advertisement He is one of four golfers to finish inside the top 15 in the past four US Opens, and he has the second-most top five finishes at majors since the start of 2020 with seven. The 28-year-old also currently ranks second on the PGA Tour in terms of driving accuracy, which could be essential for staying out of the impenetrable rough at Oakmont. US Open prediction 2: Morikawa to finish in the top 20 - 6/5 Bet365 US Open Free Bet Offers Golf betting sites are rolling out the offers for the third major of the year and there are several free bet offers available ahead of the action at Oakmont teeing off on Thursday.
