Riley backs bill that aims to lower energy costs

(WIVT/WBGH) – Congressman Josh Riley is backing a bipartisan bill aimed at lowering energy costs. The freshman Democrat has introduced the Weatherization Enhancement and Readiness Act which would add additional funding to a program already run by the Department of Energy. The DOE's Weatherization Assistance Program provides funding for insulation, air sealing and moisture control. Riley says the effort also covers energy assessments for homes. He says the average family that participates in the program saves nearly $400 a year on their utility bills. 'I've got families across the region that are really struggling to get by, making really tough choices between paying the utility bills, cutting back on the groceries, maybe picking up extra shifts at work, but then you need to pay for more childcare,' said Riley. Co-sponsors on the bill include fellow Upstate New York representatives Democrat Paul Tonko and Republican Mike Lawler. The act would reauthorize the funding through 2030. ACA launches rebrand with help of former client

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – In what's being described as a full circle moment, the American Civic Association is receiving help from an industry professional it helped to get on her feet. The ACA has a new brand and website courtesy of Idea Kraft. The local design firm was founded by Creative Director Ewelina Zajac-Holdrege. Back in 2004, she was a recent immigrant from Poland and in graduate school. Zajac-Holdrege says the American Civic Association helped her with her legal path to citizenship. Now, she's helped to provide a whole new look for the organization at a discounted price as a way to pay them back. 'They helped me with a green card, work authorization. I was just graduating without any financial resources, didn't know anyone and they were very kind and welcoming and helped me really to get my life started here,' said Zajac-Holdrege. Idea Kraft helped the ACA to develop a visual identity with new branding and messaging. They created a new logo and new interactive website. ACA Executive Director Hussein Adams says the old website was outdated and didn't properly reflect the services the organization offers for newcomers. Adams says that at a time when the immigration and refugee landscape is changing at the federal level, it's critical to provide accurate and up-to-date information for new arrivals. 'It's important to make sure that the community is fully up to date in regard to our challenges, in regard to the need for the support of the community,' said Adams. Adams says the old ACA logo featuring the Statue of Liberty became problematic because it gave the false impression that the non-profit was a governmental agency. Adams says many immigrants are fleeing persecution and are suspicious of any form of government. Idea Kraft also helped the ACA come up with a new slogan: When new Americans thrive, we all thrive. Molinaro nominated to lead Federal Transit Administration

(WIVT/WBGH) – Josh Riley's predecessor in the 19th District appears poised to take a job in the Trump administration. According to the Mass Transit online magazine, Republican Marc Molinaro has been nominated to head up the Federal Transit Administration. The FTA supports transit systems nationwide, including buses, subways, light rail, commuter rail, trolleys and ferries, through funding and technical assistance. It has previously invested more than $20 billion a year in transit systems. As Administrator, Molinaro would report to the Secretary of Transportation. During his two years in Congress, Molinaro sat on the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure. Long-Stay Pet Program helps pets find forever home

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – The Broome County Humane Society is a part of a new program where animals can transfer between different shelters across the state until they're adopted. The BISSELL Pet Foundation launched its new Long-Stay Pet program. Dogs and cats that have been waiting adoption for more than 30 days will get added to BISSELL's online platform. Other shelters can see which animals are available on the platform and ask to have them transferred to their facility. The shelter manager at the Humane Society, Amberly Ondria, says sometimes, just showing the pets to a new audience is all it takes for them to find their forever home. 'See if they would like to trade dogs. Or even, if they don't want to trade, maybe they have an adopter who's looking for a border collie, and they don't have one in their area. But a humane society in Rochester may have it. They can pull that dog from that shelter, bring it to their facility, and pursue an adoption with somebody who may be looking for that animal,' said Ondria. Ondria says all across the country, shelters are struggling with increased capacity. The Humane Society says from 2023 to 2024, dog adoptions have declined by 1%. Community members are encouraged to visit their local shelters regularly, as new pets will continually be transferred in. Truth Pharm continues to combat opioid crisis with new initiatives

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – A local non-profit organization dedicated to educating the community on substance use is inviting the public to join it in the fight to end overdose. Truth Pharm is hosting a monthly event called 'Train the Trainer'. During the 90-minute session, those in attendance will learn about addiction and how to use Narcan properly. They will then earn a certification that allows them to teach others how to use the lifesaving medication. Participants will also leave with five Narcan kits to distribute. Truth Pharm has a goal of training 100 Broome County residents through the program. So far, it has trained over 60 people. Founder and Executive Director Alexis Plues says she hopes participants walk away feeling empowered because they have the tools needed to save a life. 'You're more likely to come across a person experiencing an overdose than a heart attack. A lot of us have become CPR certified just because we want to be good community members and be able to help someone who might need it. Narcan training is the same thing,' said Plues. The next training session is on Wednesday at 6 p.m. at the Truth Pharm office, located at 49 Pine Street in Binghamton. In addition, Truth Pharm has a new initiative for certified Narcan trainers. The Broome Overdose Prevention Specialists, or BOPS, are a volunteer team who brainstorm new ways to educate the community and prevent overdose in Broome County. The group meets the second Thursday of every month. Truth Pharm is also preparing for the annual Trail of Truth. Trail of Truth honors those who have lost their lives to substance use disorder while offering support to families and individuals impacted by overdose. The event will take place on August 16 in downtown Binghamton.
