Lorenzen Dominant In 7 Innings, Witt Homers In Royals' 4-0 Win Over Diamondbacks

Michael Lorenzen struck out seven in seven dominant innings. Bobby Witt Jr. homered and the Kansas City Royals beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 4–0 on Sunday. Lorenzen (5–8) kept the Diamondbacks off-balance all afternoon with a mix of mid-90s fastballs and changeups. He struck out the side in the first inning and didn't allow a hit until Randal Grichuk's two-out double in the fifth. Lorenzen allowed two hits and walked one. Witt hit a solo homer off Anthony DeSclafani (0–1) in the fifth inning to extend his team-record road hitting streak to 26 games. Salvador Perez also hit a solo homer in the Royals' fourth win in six games. Arizona had three hits and didn't get a runner past second base to lose for the fourth time in five games. Witt's homer with one out in the fifth–his 12th of the season–was the first hit off DeSclafani. Perez followed with his 10th later in the inning. John Rave chased DeSclafani with a run-scoring single in the fifth inning and Kyle Isbel followed with another to put Kansas City up 4–0. DeSclafani allowed four runs on four hits and struck out six in four innings. Key moment: Witt's homer in the fifth was the first hit by either team. Key stat: Witt's road hitting streak ties for the second-longest in the last 10 years behind the 32-game streak by the Dodgers' Trea Turner from 2021–22. Marcus Semien also had a hit in 26 straight road games for Toronto in 2021. Up next: Kansas City LHP Andrew Heaney (4–7, 4.16 ERA) pitches the opener of a three-game home series against Pittsburgh on Monday night. Arizona RHP Zac Gallen (6–9, 5.45) opens a four-game series at San Diego on Monday night.

Diamondbacks look to Corbin Carroll in rubber game vs. Royals

(Photo credit: Patrick Breen/The Republic / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images) Arizona's Corbin Carroll was 0-for-5 in his return Saturday after missing more than two weeks with a fractured left wrist, but the Diamondbacks will need his contributions to get out of their doldrums. Despite their 7-1 win over the Kansas City Royals in Phoenix on Saturday, the Diamondbacks have lost seven of their last 10 games entering Sunday afternoon's rubber game of the series. Carroll, the team's right fielder and leadoff hitter, is batting .251 with 20 home runs and 44 RBIs this season. He has impressed teammates by returning to the lineup so quickly. 'He just wants to help the team win,' third baseman Eugenio Suarez said. 'And he's hungry to play. He's a guy who loves this game and just wants to be out in the field. It's very impressive because with the fracture he has, they said he might be lost for like a month, but he's back (much sooner). It's awesome for us. For me, I was very happy to see him back in the lineup.' Said manager Torey Lovullo: 'I'm grateful for the commitment and the dedication. He's one of our best players and one of the best players in the National League, and the fact he's in the lineup is going to give us a much-needed boost.' Right-hander Anthony DeSclafani (0-0, 4.82 ERA) is Arizona's scheduled starter on Sunday. He has one previous appearance against the Royals in his career. He got a no-decision in a start, while with the San Francisco Giants on April 9, 2023. DeSclafani allowed a run on three hits in 6 1/3 innings, did not walk a batter and struck out seven in a 3-1 Giants victory. Kansas City was stifled by Ryne Nelson on Saturday. He retired the first 16 Royals in order and allowed a run and four hits over seven innings. Nelson did not walk a batter and struck out five. Kansas City's only offense came in the sixth inning. Freddy Fermin singled with one out to become the Royals' first base runner. Jonathan India singled one out later, and Bobby Witt Jr. followed with an RBI single. Center fielder Alek Thomas then came to Nelson's rescue by denying Kansas City more runs when he made a sliding catch coming in on Vinnie Pasquantino's liner with two outs and runners on first and third to end the inning. 'We were another hit away from a couple more runs,' India said. 'The center fielder made a really good play on Vinnie's ball. So it just didn't go our way.' The Royals will send right-hander Michael Lorenzen (4-8, 4.95 ERA) to the mound on Sunday. He's 2-1 with a 3.26 ERA in nine career games against the Diamondbacks. The last time Lorenzen faced them, he was a member of the Detroit Tigers. That was on June 9, 2023, when he started and took the loss by giving up six earned runs and seven hits in 6 2/3 innings. Lorenzen walked a batter and struck out three. The D-backs won 11-6. --Field Level Media

Veteran Pitcher Dubbed 'Most Likely' Royals Trade Candidate If Team Takes Step Back

Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Last season, the Kansas City Royals burst on the scene as a postseason contender, largely due to the MVP-caliber play from superstar shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. While Witt is still incredible, there's a chance the Royals regress to the mean this season, especially considering how well the Detroit Tigers are playing. If they fall out of postseason contention, they could look to make a few big moves. ESPN's David Schoenfield predicted the Royals would cut ties with veteran Michael Lorenzen in a blockbuster trade if they happen to fall out of postseason contention. KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI - APRIL 24: Starting pitcher Michael Lorenzen #24 of the Kansas City Royals pitches during the first inning of game two of a double-header against the Colorado Rockies at Kauffman Stadium on... KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI - APRIL 24: Starting pitcher Michael Lorenzen #24 of the Kansas City Royals pitches during the first inning of game two of a double-header against the Colorado Rockies at Kauffman Stadium on April 24, 2025 in Kansas City, Missouri. More"Considering the Royals' out-of-nowhere playoff season last year, it wouldn't necessarily be a surprise to see them take a step back," Schoenfield wrote. "Let's hope not, as the more reasons to watch Bobby Witt Jr., the better. But it looks as if they're going to need some offense. "If the lineup doesn't come around, teams will certainly inquire about Seth Lugo or a couple of the relievers, but Lorenzen would be the most likely to be traded. He's making $5.5 million this year with a $12 million mutual option for 2026." Lorenzen likely has a decent bit of trade value, especially considering how many contending teams need pitching. He could fit with the Chicago Cubs, Baltimore Orioles, New York Yankees, or Boston Red Sox, among others. Lorenzen has gotten off to a good start to the season following five outings of 3.90 ERA baseball. The righty's consistently posted an ERA+ of 100 or higher over the last few seasons. Michael Lorenzen goes 6, Kyle Isbel homers as Royals top Twins

April 8 - Kyle Isbel went 3-for-4 with a homer and two RBIs to lead the Kansas City Royals to a 4-2 victory over the visiting Minnesota Twins on Monday night. Michael Lorenzen pitched six solid innings and Vinny Pasquantino and Bobby Witt Jr. drove in one run apiece as the Royals won the opener of the four-game set. Willi Castro and Harrison Bader drove in runs for the Twins, who lost for the third time in their last four games. Bader and Matt Wallner had two hits apiece for Minnesota. Lorenzen (1-1) allowed one run and five hits. He struck out three and didn't walk a batter while helping Kansas City win for the third time in its last four games. Hunter Harvey and Lucas Erceg tossed scoreless innings before Royals closer Carlos Estevez ran into trouble in the ninth. Estevez hit Ty France on the elbow with one out then walked Castro with two out before Bader lined a single into left center to score France. Estevez then retired pinch hitter Edouard Julien on a grounder to second to record his third save. Minnesota's Simeon Woods Richardson (0-1) was touched up for four runs and eight hits over 5 2/3 innings. He struck out six and walked four. The Royals moved ahead to stay by pushing across two runs in the second inning. MJ Melendez narrowly missed a home run to right and cruised into second with a double to lead off the inning. Maikel Garcia then singled to right to put runners on the corners. Isbel reached on an infield single to score Melendez and one out later Witt hit into a fielder's choice to score Garcia and give Kansas City a 3-1 lead. In the bottom of the sixth, Isbel jumped on a first-pitch changeup and hit a two-out homer to right to make it a three-run margin. Jonathan India led off the bottom of the first with a double on a drive to deep left center that Minnesota's Byron Buxton had carom off his glove. One out later, Pasquantino hit an RBI double to left. The Twins tied the score in the second. France double with one out, moved to third on a two-out wild pitch by Lorenzen and scored on Castro's double to center. --Field Level Media
