Val Kilmer died of pneumonia, death certificate confirms
April 11 (UPI) -- Batman Forever actor Val Kilmer died of pneumonia, his death certificate has confirmed. Known for his roles in such films as Top Gun, Kilmer died April 1 and was cremated April 7. He was 65. The death certificate issued by the Los Angeles County Department of Health confirms what Kilmer's daughter Mercedes previously told the New York Times about the actor's death. The certificate also lists additional causes -- acute hypoxemic respiratory failure, chronic respiratory failure, squamous cell carcinoma. Kilmer was diagnosed with throat cancer in 2014, and addressed his health issues in his 2020 memoir, I'm Your Huckleberry. "It was very hard to embrace my original diagnosis," he wrote in the book. "It was surreal. I didn't believe I was decomposing, and I wasn't ready to die."

Val Kilmer's cause of death revealed one week after he died
Top Gun star Val Kilmer's cause of death has been confirmed just a week after he died at the age of 65. The Los Angeles County Department of Health's death certificate cited pneumonia as the primary cause, TMZ reported. Kilmer's daughter previously shared that he had been dealing with the illness. But the death certificate also listed several underlying causes, including acute hypoxemic respiratory failure, chronic respiratory failure, and squamous cell carcinoma of the base of the tongue, according to TMZ. Contributing factors included malnutrition and a tracheocutaneous fistula, otherwise known as a hole in the neck connecting the windpipe directly to the skin. Kilmer was cremated on April 7, according to the outlet. The Batman Forever star dealt with several serious health issues in the years leading up to his death. He was diagnosed with throat cancer in 2014. He had a tracheotomy, which resulted in the loss of his voice. AI was used to recreate Kilmer's voice for his appearance in Top Gun: Maverick. Kilmer was also bedridden in the months before he died, with cancer treatments having left him 'frail,' sources told TMZ. His health struggles were documented in the 2021 film Val. His family released a statement to People in the days following his death, saying, 'Thank you for honoring our extraordinary father's memory. We are so proud of him and honored to see his legacy celebrated.' 'At this time, we would like to grieve privately.' In the days following Kilmer's death, dozens of his co-stars have paid tribute. Josh Brolin — who starred with Kilmer in Top Gun: Maverick — hailed him as 'a smart, challenging, brave, uber-creative firecracker.' He said 'there's not a lot left of those.' Brolin continued: 'See ya, pal. I'm going to miss you. I hope to see you up there in the heavens when I eventually get there. Until then, amazing memories, lovely thoughts.' Another Top Gun co-star, Tom Cruise, held a moment of silence for Kilmer at CinemaCon.

Val Kilmer's official cause of death revealed
Val Kilmer died of pneumonia, Fox News Digital has learned. The Los Angeles County Department of Health released the actor's death certificate Thursday. Secondary causes included acute hypoxemic respiratory failure, chronic respiratory failure and squamous cell carcinoma of the base of the tongue. Contributing factors included malnutrition and a tracheocutaneous fistula. Kilmer's daughter confirmed the "Top Gun" star died April 1 after battling pneumonia. He was 65. "Thank you for honoring our extraordinary father's memory," his family shared in a statement provided to Fox News Digital at the time. "We are so proud of him and honored to see his legacy celebrated." Kilmer had previous health issues and battled throat cancer in 2015. Kilmer most recently appeared in "Top Gun: Maverick" in 2022 to reprise his infamous role as Lt. Tom "Iceman" Kazansky. Although he could portray his character, he still had difficulty due to damage from a tracheostomy. Kilmer required the use of a breathing tube. After his death, Kilmer was honored by "Top Gun" co-star Tom Cruise during a promotional event for "Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning." "I'd like to honor a dear friend of mine, Val Kilmer, for a moment," Cruise said at CinemaCon, according to The Hollywood Reporter. "I can't tell you how much I admired his work. California braces for massive storm; evacuation warnings, closures in LA
California braces for massive storm; evacuation warnings, closures in LA Show Caption Hide Caption This week in weather: Tornadoes, wildfires, blizzard possible This week will bring the possibility of over two dozen tornadoes, a high fire risk and a blizzard. California braced for the arrival of a major Pacific storm on Wednesday, enacting road closures and issuing evacuation warnings in parts of Los Angeles and Malibu vulnerable to mudslides and debris flows. The potent storm, which will put nearly the entire central U.S. at risk of dangerous weather later this week, will dump several feet of snow along the Sierra Nevada mountains and bring torrential rain to San Francisco, Los Angeles and San Diego. A smaller storm system moved over the state on Tuesday. The incoming rain could fall at rates of an inch per hour, raising the risk of flooding, mudslides and debris flows, especially in areas charred by the wildfires that engulfed whole neighborhoods earlier this year. The Los Angeles Fire Department issued evacuation warnings and orders for residents in the areas torched by the Palisades, Sunset and Hurst wildfires. Over two dozen neighborhoods in Malibu were also placed under evacuation warnings. "Residents should prepare to evacuate now due to the significant risk of flash flooding, debris flows and mudslides," the city's office of public safety said in a statement on social media. "These hazards pose a serious threat to life and property." In addition to the evacuation advisories, officials shut down several major roads, including a section of Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu, Las Flores Canyon Road and Malibu Canyon Road. Water quality advisories issued for all LA county beaches The Los Angeles County Department of Health issued an advisory telling beachgoers to stay out of the water "due to potentially higher bacteria levels." The county said heavy rain from the incoming storm could carry bacteria, chemicals, debris and other hazards into public waterways. "Individuals who enter the water in these areas could become ill," the health department said, adding that areas near storm drains, creeks and rivers are at most risk. The ocean water quality advisory will be in effect until at least 4 p.m. Friday, the agency said. Multiple feet of snow to blanket the Sierras The National Weather Service anticipates between 1 to 3 feet of snow piling up across the Sierra Nevada mountains this week, raising the risk of avalanches and making travel at high elevations dangerous. "Heavy snow and powerful wind gusts of 40-70 mph below many major passes will create dangerous to potentially impossible travel conditions across the Sierra Nevada and northern California higher terrain this afternoon into Thursday," the National Weather Service said. AccuWeather warned blizzard conditions are possible in the Sierra Nevada due to the high winds. The storm heading east this week may bring blizzard conditions to the high Plains. Storms brewing in the South A low pressure system will move over the southern Plains on Wednesday, possibly bringing severe thunderstorms to northeast Texas, Oklahoma, western Arkansas and Louisiana, where large hail and wind damage is possible into Thursday, the weather service said. These storms are only a preview of the major impacts forecast for the central U.S. on Friday and into the weekend, when the storm set to wallop California makes its way across the country. The colossal storm will put over 100 million people at risk of severe weather, from blizzard conditions in the northern Plains to tornadoes and wildfires in the South. It has the potential to be "the most significant severe weather outbreak of the year" so far, AccuWeather said.
