You can finally take Metro to LAX more easily starting in June
Sometimes it feels impossible to find something that truly unites Angelenos, but there's one fact that we can all agree on: The traffic at LAX is the worst. Getting to—and more so around—the horseshoe-shaped automotive hell in the middle of the airport's terminals will test your patience, as well as just how much you love your family and friends in need of a ride. Thankfully, there's a little bit of relief on the way soon for the 'getting to' part of that equation: Metro announced that the LAX/Metro Transit Center station, a new light rail stop east of the airport with bus transfers and bike parking that serves both the K and C Lines, will open on June 6, 2025. As for the 'getting around' part of your LAX trip, this is still only half of what you're really waiting for. The station will eventually connect with a stop on the Automated People Mover, a separate 2.25-mile transit line owned by Los Angeles World Airports that will make three stops inside of the central terminal area. But that persistently delayed project won't open until early 2026. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (@metrolosangeles) So why is this still a big deal now? After all, the C (formerly Green) Line opened a station with 'LAX' in its name back in 1995, and it added the Aviation/Century stop with last fall's expansion of the K (formerly Crenshaw) Line. Well, the short version: way more rail connections and a much more useful train station. Let's start with the connections. Currently, the C Line operates a free airport shuttle from the Aviation/LAX station (which, despite its name, sits underneath the freeway near the farthest corner of the runway), but that's most useful for folks south of the 105 freeway. There's also the relatively new Aviation/Century station, where you can wait for a bus connection from the sidewalk along Century Boulevard. But due to construction, these stations have been marooned for riders who approach from the north; that half of the K Line currently wraps up at Westchester/Veterans, meaning you have to take a temporary bus and then transfer to another bus to the airport. But with the opening of the LAX/Metro Transit Center stop, the K Line will run seamlessly from Crenshaw to North Redondo. Moreover, it means that Metro riders along the E Line, which runs from Santa Monica to East L.A., can now make it near LAX with only a single train transfer. (Though if you're coming from Santa Monica, the Big Blue Bus will still be a much more geographically direct option, and for Downtown L.A. folks, the FlyAway bus will likely still be quicker.) Finally, there's the station itself. From the early previews, it looks like the sort of full-fledged station you'd expect to find by one of the world's busiest airports: a slick indoor-outdoor space with 16 bays for bus transfers plus secured bike parking, a customer service center and a passenger pickup and drop-off area. Look out for a suspended, origami-like sculpture from artist Glenn Kaino, too. Perhaps most importantly, it'll also tout a connection to the People Mover, an infamously delayed project that we included in our 'things to look forward to' previews for 2023 and 2024, but finally wised up and excluded it from our 2025 edition. That was a good call: Its last official update now eyes a January 2026 opening. Once in service, you'll be able to ride it between terminals, as well as to the economy garage, rideshare pickup, the rental car garage and, yes, a direct C and K Line transfer at the LAX/Metro Transit Center station. Once both of these projects finally open, if you're looking for another transit line to pine over, then allow us to introduce you to the K Line Northern Extension, a north-south route that would connect all of the major rail lines and let you take a one-seat ride from Hollywood toward the airport by— sigh —2047.

How Wildfire Survivors Can Access Free Metro Rides
The Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Metro) is offering free rides to those affected by the wildfires. Although the board resumed subway fare collection on January 27, after suspending all fees when the fires began, rides will remain free for wildfire survivors who apply for assistance. The rides are covered under the Low-Income Fare is Easy, or LIFE, program. The Metro board expanded eligibility for the program to include wildfire victims. The expansion will help survivors access relief resources across the county and reduce transportation costs as they rebuild. Anyone who experienced the loss of a home, employment, or financial hardship due to the wildfires can apply for 90 days of unlimited free rides on Metro and participating transit systems, including: Wildfire survivors can immediately access a 30-day digital pass upon applying online. They will receive a pre-loaded TAP card mailed to them for use during the rest of their eligibility period. After the initial 90 days in the program, riders will receive 20 free regional rides per month loaded onto their TAP card for an additional three months. Once those free rides are used up, fares can be waived again after taking three rides in one day or 11 in one week. The benefit also includes access to Metro Micro, the on-demand rideshare service. However, it does not cover Metro Bike or Metro Parking, and it only lasts for six months. Some Metro bus routes and train lines may still be affected by wildfire-related closures. Visit the Metro website for the latest updates and service changes in affected areas.

Metro set to close Van Nuys G Line Station for aerial bridge construction
Metro is set to close the Van Nuys G Line Station Friday for three years to begin construction on two aerial bridges. The Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority will be closing the station, parking lot and adjacent bike path. The closure is part of the G Line Improvements Project, which is aimed at enhancing transit mobility, reducing bus travel time and increasing safety. The project will include building two aerial bridges over Van Nuys Boulevard and Vesper Avenue, Metro said. The agency will be implementing detours between Sepulveda Boulevard and Woodman Avenue for buses and cyclists. "The $668 million project will upgrade the existing Bus Rapid Transit line between North Hollywood and Chatsworth with aerial bridges over three streets (including Sepulveda Boulevard later this year), better signal priority technology and a four-quadrant gating system at selected intersections," Metro said in a statement. Bus riders will be able to board G Line buses at temporary stops near the northeast corner of Oxnard Street for traveling to Chatsworth and the southwest corner for traveling to North Hollywood. Individuals who park at the Van Nuys Station should drive to the nearby Sepulveda G Line Station parking lot at 15430 W. Erwin Street, Van Nuys, CA 91411. The lot is accessible from Haskell Avenue and Erwin Street. Metro reported that the G Line, which is an 18-mile dedicated bus rapid transit line, has become one of the most successful lines in the region. The line stretches from North Hollywood to Chatsworth.

Metro expands its TAP-to-Exit program to Union Station in Los Angeles
The Metro's TAP-to-Exit program is expanding to Union Station in Los Angeles, beginning Tuesday. The Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority announced that riders will need to scan valid Metrolink fare to enter and exit the station. Turnstiles will be latched at both entrances and exits to rail lines at the historic transportation station, Metro said. Metro ambassadors will be on-site at Union Station assisting riders with their fares. Representatives will also be present to enroll income-qualified riders. Metro will be offering an "education period" that will be effective until Feb. 25, allowing riders a grace period to become accustomed to the new enforcement. After that date, security and law enforcement officers will begin issuing citations for those who do not follow the rules. The agency said it's expanding its program to help support its public safety effort. "Controlling access to the system helps to ensure that people are using the system for their transportation needs and is just one of the ways that Metro is working to improve safety," the agency wrote. Metro launched the TAP-to-Exit program in May 2024 at the North Hollywood B Line Station. A few months later, the Downtown Santa Monica E Line Station implemented the program. "In a survey of North Hollywood riders, 90 percent stated that this pilot made the station feel cleaner and 86 percent stated that this pilot made them feel safer," Metro said.
