Dodgers bring in former Yankees reliever for bullpen depth

Former New York Yankees reliever Lou Trivino is getting another shot. After being released by the San Francisco Giants this week, the Los Angeles Dodgers signed the right-hander to a minor league deal on Saturday, according to MLB Trade Rumors' Anthony Franco. Trivino's journey has been anything but smooth since the Yankees acquired him at the 2022 trade deadline. He was part of the deal that sent J.P. Sears and other prospects to Oakland. Advertisement Trivino suffered a ulnar collateral ligament tear in the 2023 spring training and he missed both the 2023 season and 2024. The Yankees declined his $5 million option for 2025, making him a free agent. Trivino signed a minor league deal with the Giants in February and made their Opening Day roster after an impressive spring. However, his regular-season performance was inconsistent, with a 5.84 ERA over 12⅓ innings, leading to his designation for assignment. Now with the Dodgers, Trivino can try to reclaim his pre-injury form. For Yankees fans, it's a reminder of that horrible 2022 trade. Montas made nine appearances and eight starts for the Yankees over two seasons. Coincidentally, he is currently on the injured list for New York's other team, the Mets. Trivino never pitched for them after the 2022 season. Advertisement Meanwhile, Sears has become a staple in an up-and-coming A's rotation and faced the Yankees on Saturday. Former Yankees arm promoted by Dodgers after bullpen injury troubles

Lou Trivino is back in the big leagues, and Yankees fans might do a double-take when they see where he landed. The Dodgers are calling up the one-time Yankees reliever after placing Kirby Yates on the 15-day injured list, according to The Athletic's Fabian Ardaya. Trivino didn't exactly light it up during his brief stint with the Giants this season, posting a rough 5.84 ERA over 12 1/3 innings before being designated for assignment. After clearing waivers, he elected free agency and wasted no time landing a minor league deal with Los Angeles. Advertisement Now, after exactly one appearance and one scoreless inning with Triple-A Oklahoma City, he's back in the majors. Talk about falling into the perfect situation. Former New York Yankees relief pitcher Lou TrivinoBrad Penner-Imagn Images Yankees fans will remember Trivino from his 2022 run in pinstripes, when he arrived as part of the Frankie Montas deal with Oakland. While Montas became the cautionary tale, barely making any starts for the Yankees before a nagging shoulder injury put him on the injured list, Trivino quietly turned in some solid work out of the bullpen down the stretch. He posted a 1.66 ERA over 25 appearances in 2022 and he looked like the silver lining in that deadline trade that went bust. . There was even talk of him becoming a key late-inning option before injuries derailed his 2023 season. Advertisement Now the Dodgers will see if there's anything left in the tank. And if there's one team that knows how to squeeze every last ounce of value from a reliever, it's Los Angeles. Dodgers designate Chris Taylor for assignment, parting ways with another veteran

Chris Taylor, the Dodgers' longest tenured position player, was designated for assignment on Sunday as the team made room on its roster for Tommy Edman's return from the injured list. (Icon Sportswire / Getty Images) The Chris Taylor era in Los Angeles is over. On Sunday, Taylor was designated for assignment by the Dodgers after a 10-year tenure with the club, according to a person with knowledge of the situation who wasn't authorized to speak publicly. Advertisement In corresponding roster moves, the Dodgers activated Tommy Edman from the injured list and added pitcher Lou Trivino to the 40-man roster. Trivino was in Los Angeles on Sunday — occupying the same locker stall Taylor used to — after fellow reliever Kirby Yates suffered a hamstring injury Saturday night. The former All-Star was the longest-tenured position player on the roster, after the Dodgers designated Austin Barnes for assignment last week. But, just like with Barnes, Taylor's declining production coupled with the emergence of rookie utilityman Hyeseong Kim left the 34-year-old expendable. Thus, for the second time in the last week, the Dodgers parted ways with one of the most familiar faces of the team. Sign up for more Dodgers news with Dodgers Dugout. Dodgers sign former Yankee Lou Trivino to minor league contract

The Los Angeles Dodgers find themselves in a pitching situation that seemed inconceivable a mere two months ago. Heading into 2025, the Dodgers boasted one of the most talented and deepest collection of arms that baseball has seen in recent memory. However, a slew of injuries have plagued Los Angeles and forced them to look elsewhere for innings. Advertisement According to Anthony Franco of MLB Trade Rumors, the Dodgers have signed pitching support in light of a depleted staff: Trivino was most recently on the San Francisco Giants, where he made 11 appearances with a 5.84 ERA and 7.00 FIP before being designated for assignment. Now, as a member of Los Angeles, he will look to tap into his second-half of 2024 success with the New York Yankees. New York Yankees relief pitcher Lou Trivino (56) pitches in the seventh inning against the Houston Astros during game three of the ALCS for the 2022 MLB Playoffs at Yankee Penner-Imagn Images Over 25 games and 21 and 2/3 innings for the Yankees last summer, Trevino had a stellar 1.66 ERA, a 3.34 FIP, and 22 strikeouts to 10 walks. At 33 years old, it feels unlikely Trivino will spend the rest of 2025 in the minors. He has had an up and down MLB tenure, but still carries a career 3.94 ERA and 4.03 FIP. Advertisement Trivino is not going to completely overhaul the Dodgers' bullpen, but he is a proven arm in a desperate time. Los Angeles is currently without Evan Phillips (15-day injured list), Michael Kopech (60-day), Blake Treinen (60-day), and Brusdar Graterol (60-day). That is without even mentioning injured starters like Blake Snell, Tyler Glasnow, Clayton Kershaw, and Shohei Ohtani. The Dodgers are still 26-13, atop the competitive National League West, and have the 12th best team bullpen ERA in the Majors at 3.68. NL Title Contender Makes Roster Move On Former Yankees Pitcher

Former New York Yankees pitcher Lou Trivino's long-awaited return to the majors proved to be short-lived. The San Francisco Giants designated Trivino, 33, for assignment on Sunday. The longtime Athletics reliever posted a 5.84 ERA and 11-5 K-BB ratio across 12.1 innings for the Giants. Advertisement Trivino allowed four home runs against 54 batters. However, the veteran righty recorded scoreless outings in four of his last five games for a 22-13 Giants team that woke up Monday only 1.5 games out of first place in the NL West. San Francisco subsequently promoted lefty Kyle Harrison from Triple-A Sacramento. Before a scoreless March 29 outing against the Cincinnati Reds, Trivino hadn't pitched in the big leagues since Oct. 22, 2022, in a Game 3 ALCS loss to the Houston Astros. At that point, Trivino was wrapping up a stellar half-season with the Yankees. Trivino recorded a sterling 1.66 ERA over 21.2 innings with the Yankees that summer, and he then tallied four scoreless outings during the Bronx Bombers' playoff run. Advertisement A 2013 11th-round pick, Trivino owns a 3.94 ERA in 297 career innings for the Giants, Athletics, and Yankees. We'll see if the Yankees attempt bringing him back, now that he's finally healthy, or if Trivino is headed for another team's bullpen.
