What is an exclusive rights free agent in the NFL?
What is an exclusive rights free agent in the NFL? With NFL free agency set to begin this week, there are three categories of players: unrestricted free agents, restricted free agents and exclusive rights free agents (ERFAs). Today, we're taking a quick look ERFAs. ERFAs have no leverage in negotiations. They are players with fewer than three accrued seasons in the NFL and an expiring contract. Teams can offer their in-house ERFAs one-year, league-minimum contracts. If an ERFA receives a tender, their options are to sign it or sit out the season. Once they receive a tender, ERFAs cannot negotiate with other clubs. If their team decides not to give them a tender, the ERFA would then become an unrestricted free agent. This year, the Denver Broncos had five ERFAs and they gave one-year tenders to all of them. The Broncos brought back CB Ja'Quan McMillian ($1.03 million), TE Lucas Krull ($1.03 million), OLB Dondrea Tillman ($960,000), DL Jordan Jackson ($960,000) and DB Devon Key ($960,000) ahead of the start of NFL free agency. After securing their in-house ERFAs, Denver's front office will now turn its attention toward unrestricted free agency. We will track all of the team's moves on Broncos Wire. Broncos place 1-year ERA tender on tight end Lucas Krull
Broncos place 1-year ERA tender on tight end Lucas Krull The Denver Broncos placed one-year tenders on all five of their exclusive rights free agents on Tuesday, including tight end Lucas Krull. The ERFA tenders are worth the league minimum. For a player with two years of experience like Krull, that's $1,030,000. That marks a raise from the $915,000 Krull earned last season, but the contract is not guaranteed, so it provides little assurance of making the team. Krull (6-6, 260 pounds) entered the league as an undrafted free agent out of Pittsburgh with the New Orleans Saints in 2022. After spending his rookie season on their practice squad, Krull was cut by the Saints following training camp in 2023. Krull then joined Denver's practice squad and he ended up dressing for seven games that season. Krull appeared in 13 games last fall, hauling in 19 receptions for 152 yards. Through two seasons (20 games) with the Broncos, Krull has totaled 27 catches for 247 yards and one touchdown. He'll now get another chance to compete for a role this summer. In addition to Krull, Denver also placed one-year ERFA tenders on cornerback Ja'Quan McMillian, pass rusher Dondrea Tillman, defensive lineman Jordan Jackson and safety Devon Key.
