George Lucas to Make First-Ever Appearance at San Diego Comic-Con, an Event That ‘Star Wars' Helped Put on the Map

George Lucas has been to the Met Gala, but he's never been to San Diego Comic-Con before. That's about to change, as an appearance for the 'Star Wars' creator at the annual gathering has been announced for the forthcoming edition. Lucas's appearance will take place on Sunday, July 27, in Hall H, and he'll be joined by director Guillermo del Toro and legendary Oscar-winning Lucasfilm Senior Vice President and Executive Design Director Doug Chiang for a conversation moderated by Queen Latifah. The panel will discuss Lucas's ultimate passion project, his forthcoming Lucas Museum of Narrative Art, which will open in Los Angeles's Exposition Park in 2026. Wyeth, Norman Rockwell, Frida Kahlo, and Beatrix Potter, as well as comic book artists Alison Bechdel and R. Crumb, and photographers Gordon Parks, Dorothea Lange, and Henri Cartier-Bresson. It will also house the Lucas Archive, with props and models from Lucas's filmmaking career. It's easy to see how that intersection of media to power storytelling would fascinate mixed-media legend del Toro, and certainly Chiang. He won an Oscar as a visual effects supervisor on 'Death Becomes Her.' In 1995, Lucas hired Chiang to oversee the look of the entire prequel trilogy to come, and he's stayed on with Lucasfilm even after its sale to Disney to shape and curate the look of 'Star Wars' ever since. No one artist since Ralph McQuarrie has done more to shape the look of the franchise. This panel will also be a remarkable full-circle moment: Yes, Lucas has never appeared at San Diego Comic-Con before. But 'Star Wars' helped put San Diego Comic-Con on the map. Legendary publicist Charles Lippincott brought promotional materials for the original 'Star Wars' film to Comic-Con in 1976, almost a full year before the film was released. Howard Chaykin's iconic 'Star Wars' poster was on display then, and Lucasfilm told attendees a lot about what the film would be. They were not averse to major spoilers in those days: In fact, the novelization of 'Star Wars' by Alan Dean Foster in December 1976, almost six months before the film came out. David Glanzer, chief communications and strategy officer of Comic-Con, said in a statement: 'We are beyond thrilled to welcome George Lucas to Comic-Con for the very first time. Nearly five decades ago, 'Star Wars' made one of its earliest public appearances at our convention, along with a booth featuring Howard Chaykin's now legendary 'Star Wars' poster as a promotional item. Now, to have Mr. Lucas return — this time to debut the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art — is a true full-circle moment. His lifelong dedication to visual storytelling and world-building resonates deeply with us and our community, and the museum's mission to celebrate narrative art in all its forms perfectly reflects what Comic-Con has championed from the very beginning.' George Lucas makes Comic-Con debut for Lucas Museum of Narrative Art

Excited fans waved glowing Star Wars lightsabers on Sunday (Jul 27) at the San Diego Comic-Con panel for George Lucas' latest project, the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art. Along with Lucas, the panel included director Guillermo del Toro and Doug Chiang, vice president of Disney's Lucasfilm, with Queen Latifah moderating at the San Diego Convention Center. Attendees shouted "Lucas! Lucas! Lucas!" and clapped their hands in anticipation of the Star Wars creator's arrival, and gave the 81-year-old Lucas a standing ovation as he took his seat. "Opening in 2026, the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art is a first-of-its-kind institution dedicated to illustrated storytelling across time, cultures, and media," a press release from the museum said. The 11-acre campus, in Exposition Park in Los Angeles, will include a green space and a 300,000-square-foot building with galleries, two theatres, a library, restaurant, cafe, and retail and community spaces. Some of its collection will include art from comic book artist Jack Kirby, painter Norman Rockwell and illustrator Kadir Nelson, as well as a Lucas archive with models, props, concept art and costumes. "I love all art, no matter what it is," Lucas said after showing a video that gave a sneak peek at the museum. The video included renderings of the museum interior and exterior, as well as the museum's broad range of art ranging from more traditional fine art and comic book strips to Star Wars sculptures and installations. Lucas began the panel recalling his days as a college student struggling to pursue his dream of becoming an art collector due to the steep cost of fine art. But the filmmaker found an affordable exception with comic books, sold cheaply in "underground" markets. Now, rather than selling art he collected over around 50 years, Lucas said he prefers to create what he calls a "temple to the people's art". Lucas kept the conversation focused on the museum and did not discuss Star Wars or Indiana Jones. For del Toro, the museum offers a visual past that belongs to everyone and can't be erased, noting that he may move some of his personal art collection to the Lucas Museum.

George Lucas finally comes to Comic-Con to give a preview of his new museum

(Photo by Jordan Strauss/Invision/AP, File) SAN DIEGO — George Lucas is finally coming to the stage at Comic-Con. And while 'Star Wars' is sure to get a mention, the 81-year-old is making his debut appearance at the San Diego pop cultural extravaganza for a more earthbound reason: a preview of his long-in-the-works Lucas Museum of Narrative Art in Los Angeles. The Sunday panel discussion in Comic-Con's vaunted Hall H will act as a relatively quiet closing act to the four-day festival that brought its usual series of big, bombastic looks at upcoming sci-fi and superhero projects. The museum-centered session is also meant to be a broader discussion of the new institution's subject matter: the histories and traditions of narrative art across time and cultures. Lucas will be joined by fellow filmmaker Guillermo Del Toro and art director Doug Chiang, who has worked on a steady series of 'Star Wars' films starting with the Lucas-directed prequels in 1999. Queen Latifah will act as moderator. Lucas is easily on the Mount Rushmore of figures whose work has had the greatest inspiration on the kind of films and other pop cultural celebrated annually in Hall H at Comic-Con. But the convention wasn't a common showcase for blockbuster films when he was directing them himself. And he sold 'Star Wars' and Lucasfilm to the Walt Disney Co. in 2012, and Disney has used different venues to make big splashy presentations about its properties. The museum founded by Lucas and his wife, businesswoman Mellody Hobson, is set to open next year in Exposition Park, near the Los Angeles Coliseum, several of the city's other museums, and the University of Southern California. The 11-acre campus and 300,000-square-foot building designed by architect Ma Yansong includes galleries, two theaters and related spaces. Andrew Dalton, The Associated Press
