Mohun Bagan Thrash Diamond Harbour 5-1 to Seal Durand Cup Quarterfinal Spot
Last Updated: Mohun Bagan Super Giant triumphed 5-1 over Diamond Harbour FC, bagging a spot in the Durand Cup quarterfinals. Dominant Mohun Bagan Super Giant triumphed over Diamond Harbour FC with a 5-1 win, bagging their place in the quarterfinals of the Durand Cup on Saturday, August 9. In a crucial Group B game, Anirudh Thapa put the Mariners ahead, but Luka Majcen equalised five minutes later. However, goals from Jamie MacLaren, Liston Colaco, Sahal Abdul Samad and Jason Cummings ensured Mohun Bagan advanced to the quarterfinals as group winners. Diamond Harbour now must rely on other results to qualify for the knockouts as one of the best second-placed sides. Mohun Bagan opened the scoring in the 19th minute when Anirudh Thapa received a first-time pass at the edge of the box and curled a beautiful shot into the top-right corner. Diamond Harbour responded just four minutes later. A defensive error by Mohun Bagan gave Luka Majcen space in the box, and he made no mistake by slotting past the advancing Vishal Kaith to level the score. The match was balanced until the 33rd minute, when Bagan regained the lead. A poor pass from the Diamond Harbour goalkeeper permitted Jamie MacLaren to seize possession and score with a precise toe-poke finish, igniting the home crowd. As the halftime whistle blew, Mohun Bagan held a narrow 2-1 lead. In the second half, Bagan quickly tightened their grip on the match. Just minutes after the restart, the Mariners earned a penalty when Liston Colaco was brought down inside the box by Naresh Singh Yendrembam after a sharp run. The foul resulted in a straight red card for the defender, reducing Diamond Harbour to ten men. Colaco stepped up for the penalty and calmly converted, sending the goalkeeper the wrong way to make it 3-1. The pressure paid off in the 64th minute when Diamond Harbour's defensive lapse allowed Sahal to seize a loose ball inside the box. With trademark calmness, the midfielder slotted past the goalkeeper to score Bagan's fourth goal of the night. In the 80th minute, Cummings exploited the space on the edge of the box, collecting a well-timed pass before slotting the ball into the net to register Mohun Bagan's fifth goal. Durand Cup: Luka winner gives DHFC full points against Md Sporting
Kolkata, July 28 (UNI) Debutants Diamond Harbour FC (DHFC), rode on Slovenian poacher Luka Majcen's injury time winner, to register a historic 2-1 victory against former champions and local giants Mohammedan Sporting in the first Group B clash here today. Thokchom Adison Singh scored for the Kolkata giants in the first half with DHFC's Sairuatkima drawing parity in the second for the debutants at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan (VYBK). Just as it looked that the match was petering out into a tame draw, Luka penetrated the Mohammedan defence, got lucky with a rebound and calmly slotted home the winner to give his side full three points. Celebrated DHFC coach Kibu Vicuna began with a four-man defence and three-man forward line. Mohammedan gaffer Mehraj Ud Din Wadoo, on the other hand, went in with a 3-4-3 formation to begin proceedings. The first goal came after the half-hour mark and before that the only chance of note had fallen to the I-League 2 champions, when new recruit from Brazil, Clayton Da Silva hit his shot just wide off the Mohammedan post. Ashley Alban Koli it was with the assist as he found Thokchom's run from the right with a floater from centre of midfield. The diminutive Mohammedan winger controlled well and burst in with pace. With experienced defender Melroy Assisi in attendance, Thokchom drove towards the near post with keeper Mirshad in position. The low drive caught Mirshad's palm, deflected onto his thighs and bulged the net. Vicuna did not waste time as Mohammedan took the lead into the half-time break. He made two changes, bringing in Luka Majcen and Samuel in place of Clayton and Naro Hari Shrestha up front. That brought immediate results just after the break, as Samuel's corner from the right saw DHFC defender Sairuatkima meet it with a strong header which beat Subhajit Bhattacharjee in the Mohammedan goal. Former Chennayin FC star Sajal Bag then had the best chance of the rest of the half when his pile driver from range in the 83rd minute, shaved Mirshad's palm and struck the post. Mohammedan did play good football throughout the match and looked stronger in finish, but Luka Majcen's opportunism inside the box, changed the course of the match. Samuel chested down to put Luka through and after his first shot was saved by Subhajit, it deflected off Dinesh Meetei in the Mohammedan defence and rolled back in the Slovenian's path, who finished with elan.
