Bodoland stun Punjab to make it to top
Bodoland FC gifted the fullhouse crowd at SAI Stadium in Kokrajhar a memorable victory against an ISL club on Saturday that also took them to the top of the Group D table and ended Punjab FC's chances of going ahead in the 134th Durand Cup. It was an inch-perfect curling kick from the corner by Gwgwmsar Gayary in the 69th minute that was met by a poaching header from Colombian striker Robinson Blandon Rendon — rising above the Punjab FC defenders — whose power and angle made sure that goalkeeper Ravi Kumar could do nothing to stop it, or the home fans from breaking into a rapture of joy. While Punjab tried their best for an equaliser in the dying minutes, Bodoland came out the deserving winners and the three points that made them leapfrog Punjab to the top of the group with six points from three matches against their ISL rivals' four points. The first half unfolded in heavy rain, with Punjab immediately taking the attacking initiative against the home side with Nikhil Prabhu and Princeton Rebello leading upfront, and Vishal and Suhail from the wings. But the Bodoland defence led by Mosang Basumatary and Dinesh Basumatary stood firm, cutting out crosses and blocking shots. And the hosts' attack, too, had its moments of brilliance in the rain. With the rain settling for a drizzle in the second half, came the turning point of the game, but not completely against the run of play, as Bodoland were awarded a corner kick and Robinson breached the Punjab FC goal with a powerful header.
