'Sharpness will come' for Motherwell, says Fadinger

Motherwell midfielder Lukas Fadinger says the players are "all really excited" about the football philosophy manager manager Jens Berthel Askou is trying to instil at Fir Austrian scored an extra-time winner as the Steelmen booked their place in the League Cup quarter-finals with a hard earned, but deserved, 1-0 win at St Johnstone."It was [a tight angle] at first I thought it was offside but I am just happy that it went in, we are so happy to go to the quarter finals," Fadinger largely dominated things at McDiarmid Park, serving up a slick style of a lack of cutting edge looked like it could cost them before the midfielder's dramatic late 24-year-old added: "Of course we weren't that sharp in the final third but it will come for sure. We are trying to do our best, we give our best in every training session and try to improve and I am 100 per cent sure it will come."We are all really excited, we try to play football and I think not many teams try it in this league and yes I am just happy that we tried to play and give our best and it will come with time."We weren't that sharp but I think we can play the final passes and we have players who can play this and I am looking forward to the next games."

Motherwell boss hails side for keeping frustrations in check to sink St Johnstone in extra-time

The Steelmen needed a late Lukas Fadinger goal to edge into the quarter-finals of the Premier Sports Cup Jens Berthel Askou praised his Motherwell players for not letting frustrations get the better of them before edging past St Johnstone 1-0 to reach the Premier Sports Cup last 16. ‌ The Premiership side prevailed in Perth thanks to a goal in the second half of extra-time from Lukas Fadinger. ‌ The Austrian latched onto a clinical Elliot Watt pass to settle a terrific tie and Danish coach Askou is impressed by his team picking up his dynamic, possession-based style so quickly. ‌ They failed to turn dominance into goals in last week's stalemate at St Mirren, but they wore down the Championship leaders away from home and that is seven games without defeat since the start of a new campaign. Askou said: 'It seems natural to the players; they don't think too much about it anymore. 'They don't react emotionally when they're not successful or lose the ball. 'They just react instantly to win it back or block a shot. There are some emotions which are good to have. 'But some which might, with the style of play we try to implement, not be the most productive. 'Fear and frustration, for example. Anger too. If we want to play the way we want to play, we need optimism, positivity, resilience and bravery. ‌ 'Those are the emotions we try to instil in the players and push. Then there are some we try to tone down. 'It's about being more effective as a football team. It's been a while since we lost a game so there is a good feeling.' ‌ Askou admitted St Johnstone were a serious test for his side. 'You have to earn the right to win games and I think we invested a lot into it,' he said. 'So did St Johnstone and big praise to them, because they pushed us to the limit. 'We tried to drive the tempo from the start but they also had their moments. ‌ 'We had to defend really well at times but, with more sharpness in the final third, we might have decided the game in 90 minutes.' Saints boss Simo Valakari lamented two missed chances, saying: 'It wasn't an easy game – Motherwell kept the ball and tried to break us down. 'But our players gave everything – every little bit they had inside their body. And in some moments, we played very well. 'We had two of the clearest chances in the match – Jason Holt and Makenzie Kirk. 'When you face a Premiership team you need to take them (chances).'

Jens Berthel Askou pleased with Motherwell's progress so far

Jens Berthel Askou is pleased with the application and aptitude of his Motherwell players as they plough through their Premier Sports Cup group campaign. The Steelmen drew 2-2 at Clyde in their group opener last weekend before winning the penalty shoot-out, followed by a 2-1 comeback home win over Peterhead – with Austrian striker Lukas Fadinger scoring a stoppage-time winner. Ahead of the third Group G game at Stenhousemuir on Saturday, Well's new Danish boss was positive. 'First of all, we've seen a squad and a group of players who are very eager to show that they want to learn,' said Askou, who will assess whether Lennon Miller, the 18-year-old midfielder linked with a big-money move away from the Fir Park club, will be fit to play at the weekend after missing the first two games with a minor injury. 'And they're very eager to drive the tempo in the game and to take some initiative, and they've been quite brave in a lot of the phases. 'They've adapted really well and they're really trying and really eager to show that they want to play the style of football we want. 'I think the development from the game in Clyde to the one on Tuesday night was quite obvious in some phases. 'And then it's also still clear that we need to improve in the effectiveness in the final third, and to how to deal with especially the direct play that we face at the minute with teams going very direct against us. 'First of all, how we stay composed in these situations, and when we can, take the ball down instead of doing what most of the players have been used to throughout the whole career, to just clear the ball up the park as far away as possible, no matter how much time and space they actually have to bring the ball down and play and get the game in our terms. 'So that's something we are still working on, getting these habits in. 'And then, again, trying to lift the tempo every day we train, and the quality, and the decision-making and also the relations in the final third is also about that. 'There's a lot of new players trying to find each other and understand each other. And that sometimes takes a little bit of time.'
