Travelling can provide solace and clarity for those grappling with the weight of grief.
For Lynne Forbes, the mother of late South African rap icon Kiernan "AKA" Forbes, her recent journey to the Northern Cape was more than just a trip; it was a powerful step towards healing.
This journey enabled Forbes to walk in her son's shoes, uncovering cherished memories and sharing in the stories of those who knew him.
During her visit to The Big Hole in Kimberley, Forbes met a tour guide who had a special connection to AKA.
He shared how they bonded over a mutual love for wrestling.
'He was my favourite singer, and we had a passion for wrestling. He loved Bret Hart, I loved The Rock, so I am privileged to meet you,' said the guide.
This personal encounter provided warmth and comfort as Forbes reflected on her son's legacy.
Forbes took to Instagram to express her feelings: 'Life has a gentle way of placing the right people in your path at the right moment.'
She detailed her heartfelt interactions with not only David, the tour guide, but also Lugano and Elisa, who recounted memorable encounters with her son.
These stories brought her joy amidst her sorrow.
The Big Hole, known as the world's largest hand-dug excavation, is a testament to the diamond rush era.
It offers a glimpse into South Africa's rich history and serves as a unique attraction where visitors can explore the museum, the reconstructed old town, and admire the massive crater.
Earlier this year, Forbes and her granddaughter, Kairo Forbes, travelled to Istanbul.
Their time there was steeped in special memories, as they ventured through the city's spectacular landmarks and bustling markets.
'Kiernan always wished to take us to visit Istanbul,' she recalled.
'On this trip, it literally feels as if we are walking in his footsteps, with him leading the way wherever we go.'
