Travelling in AKA's footsteps: Lynne Forbes' healing journey to remember her son

Travelling can provide solace and clarity for those grappling with the weight of grief.
For Lynne Forbes, the mother of late South African rap icon Kiernan "AKA" Forbes, her recent journey to the Northern Cape was more than just a trip; it was a powerful step towards healing.
This journey enabled Forbes to walk in her son's shoes, uncovering cherished memories and sharing in the stories of those who knew him.
During her visit to The Big Hole in Kimberley, Forbes met a tour guide who had a special connection to AKA.
He shared how they bonded over a mutual love for wrestling.
'He was my favourite singer, and we had a passion for wrestling. He loved Bret Hart, I loved The Rock, so I am privileged to meet you,' said the guide.
This personal encounter provided warmth and comfort as Forbes reflected on her son's legacy.
Forbes took to Instagram to express her feelings: 'Life has a gentle way of placing the right people in your path at the right moment.'
She detailed her heartfelt interactions with not only David, the tour guide, but also Lugano and Elisa, who recounted memorable encounters with her son.
These stories brought her joy amidst her sorrow.
The Big Hole, known as the world's largest hand-dug excavation, is a testament to the diamond rush era.
It offers a glimpse into South Africa's rich history and serves as a unique attraction where visitors can explore the museum, the reconstructed old town, and admire the massive crater.
Earlier this year, Forbes and her granddaughter, Kairo Forbes, travelled to Istanbul.
Their time there was steeped in special memories, as they ventured through the city's spectacular landmarks and bustling markets.
'Kiernan always wished to take us to visit Istanbul,' she recalled.
'On this trip, it literally feels as if we are walking in his footsteps, with him leading the way wherever we go.'

Prince Kaybee slams Dricus: 'Why did he lie about white genocide?'
Prince Kaybee is one of many South Africans on social media who have called out Dricus du Plessis over his endorsement of US President Donald Trump and Elon Musk, who have accused South Africa of promoting a 'white genocide'. Over the weekend, the MMA fighter was dethroned of the UFC Middleweight World Champion title belt by his opponent Khamzat Chimaev. On his X account, Prince Kaybee criticised Dricus du Plessis on his views on South Africa. He tweeted about the former UFC champion: 'Why did he lie or carry the white genocide propaganda? We have our differences. But in most cases, people just generally get along. I mean, I have white people who religiously listen to my music, and I appreciate them as people who support me. 'Why was he embracing the falsehood? Did he not think it would come with some backlash? What was he thinking, man?' Dricus du Plessis has not said anything relating to a 'white genocide'. However, he has shown public support for President Trump and Pretoria-born billionaire Elon Musk Earlier this year, Dricus infamously donned a slogan T-shirt that read: 'Trump prefers champions'. When asked about the re-elected president, the MMA fighter said, 'He is amazing, and I've had the privilege of meeting him. 'He said good changes are coming. He's holding many people and countries accountable for everything, and it's amazing to see'. Dricus du Plessis has praised Donald Trump and Elon Musk for speaking out about South Africa. Images via Instagram: @ufc Dricus also gave a 'big shout out to fellow South African Elon Musk for also doing the right thing.' In recent months, Trump and Musk have publicly condemned South Africa for 'racial discrimination' towards white people. According to the world's richest man, his home country is guilty of 'promoting a white genocide'. Like Trump and Musk, Dricus has often spoken out about his concerns for white South Africans, particularly farmer murders. At his UFC debut in 2020, he told the media of his home country, 'It's unbelievable, people are being murdered daily. Because it's Africa, a lot of the world doesn't see it. Nobody knows what is going on…I want the world to see what is happening in South Africa.' Let us know by leaving a comment below, or send a WhatsApp to 060 011 021 1. Priscilla Nkoane: how a Bloemfontein girl became Durban's go-to travel and lifestyle influencer
Priscilla Nkoane (26) is Bloemfontein born influencer carving a name for herself finding the best that Durban has to offer in food and travel. "I create content about food, lifestyle, and travel," says Nkoane, "with a focus on adding creativity and purpose to everything I share." Originally from Bloemfontein, this dynamic Pedi woman uses her platform to celebrate the beauty found in everyday moments. In the heart of Durban, 26-year-old Priscilla Nkoane is carving a niche as a prominent lifestyle and travel content creator. Motivated by the fresh opportunities each new day presents, Nkoane wakes up every morning thankful for the chance to try again. "Every day is another opportunity to come closer to my goals," she shares. This stirring hope fuels her passion for content creation, providing her with avenues to learn and engage with diverse communities through vibrant experiences. Her love for fun shines particularly through her favourite local and international destinations. "Cape Town is absolutely breathtaking; the views, the food, the vibe - it's like a little escape," Nkoane observes. She contrasts this with the tranquillity of Switzerland, a favourite international getaway where the mountainous landscape feels like stepping into a living postcard. Nkoane's journey into content creation began during one of the most challenging periods of her life. "I had just lost my job and my Instagram account, which felt like everything was falling apart," she recalls. But from this turmoil emerged a fresh start. "Starting over allowed me to create something new and authentic. I began sharing everything I had previously been afraid to post, ultimately building a space that truly reflects my passions." Her platform is driven by a desire to connect and inspire. "I've always believed there's power in sharing - being open, relatable, and real," she notes. Nkoane seeks to be a beacon of encouragement for young women, emphasising that there is space for everyone's unique journey in the industry. However, the digital landscape is not without its challenges. Nkoane candidly addresses the jealousy that can sometimes plague female creators. "I really don't agree with that mindset. I focus on my own journey and protect my peace," she affirms, managing to steer clear of unhealthy competition by concentrating on her goals and aspirations. In her journey, Nkoane draws inspiration from figures like Robyn-Leigh Mentor, whose positive energy and authenticity resonate deeply with her. "Robyn's grace and gratitude remind me to stay grounded as I pursue my passions," Nkoane reflects, underscoring the importance of community support. To young aspiring creators contemplating their digital presence, Nkoane has valuable advice: "Nobody is paying as much attention to your life as you think, so post that thing you're afraid to post. Create because it brings you joy, not for validation." It is in this authenticity that true magic lies.
