Beyond California: In-N-Out's massive Tennessee expansion takes shape
In-N-Out Burger's expansion into Tennessee is coming into clearer focus with the recent approval of a new location just north of Nashville. Last week, a regional transportation committee approved two resolutions for an In-N-Out at RiverGate Mall, a shopping center undergoing renovation in Goodlettsville and Madison, according to Fox 17. Two years ago, the beloved Southern California-based burger chain announced its plans to expand into the Volunteer State with, at the time, an unspecified number of restaurants. 'I've fallen in love with really the whole state,' President Lynsi Snyder-Ellingson said at the time. Now, according to the Nashville Business Journal, In-N-Out is eyeing 35 possible Tennessee locations, in addition to a new regional headquarters in Franklin. They're expected to begin opening in 2026. Besides the RiverGate Mall site, other planned Tennessee locations include Lebanon, Mt. Juliet, Madison, Antioch, Knoxville, Chattanooga, Memphis, Clarksville, Cookeville, Jackson, Morristown, and the Tri-Cities area. Tennessee will mark In-N-Out's farthest expansion eastward to date. The chain currently operates over 400 locations across eight states: California, Texas, Arizona, Nevada, Utah, Colorado, Oregon, and Idaho. Its first Washington state location is expected to open this summer. In-N-Out Burger was founded by Harry and Esther Snyder in Baldwin Park, California, in 1948. Their granddaughter, Lynsi Snyder, took over the family business in 2010, and it remains a family-owned operation with no franchises. Earlier this year, the company announced plans to relocate its home office from Irvine, in Orange County, back to Baldwin Park by 2029. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. In-N-Out Burger Announced They're Headed To This Southern City
In-N-Out Burger has had Tennessee on its menu for a while. The first locations are expected to open in the Volunteer State in 2026, starting with Nashville. The Nashville restaurants will be In-N-Out's first to open east of Texas and could include as many as 15 locations. The California-based burger chain also has a new regional office under construction in Franklin, Tennessee, just south of Nashville. "I've fallen in love with really the whole state," President Lynsi Snyder-Ellingson told the Memphis Business Journal—and it looks like they'll have a big presence there. Here's a list of 35 possible locations the company is considering in Tennessee: Nashville: 10 to 15 stores Clarksville Cookeville Jackson Memphis: four to five stores Chattanooga: two to three stores Knoxville: three to five stores Morristown Tri-Cities: two to three stores If In-N-Out moves forward with all of them, Tennessee won't be far behind Texas, which currently has 43 restaurants. For those who are new to In-N-Out, the company's name comes from its trend-setting origins as a drive-through restaurant. In-N-Out is known for still using fresh beef patties rather than frozen, and restaurants slice their own fries and serve shakes made with real ice cream. In-N-Out isn't the only burger chain that's expanding in Tennessee. Texas-based Whataburger has restaurants set to open this year in Chattanooga and Knoxville, as well as its first-ever restaurants in the state of North Carolina.
