Iconic BMW model is being discontinued after 35 YEARS with ‘retro-inspired' send-off
DEAD END It's getting one-last hurrah - with a selection of very cool colours and other added extras THE BMW 8-Series is set to be discontinued - a model that traces its roots back to the iconic 1990s E31 generation. And to send it off, the German giants are giving the stylish motor a retro-inspired send-off, courtesy of a very cool special edition called the Edition M Heritage. 4 According to the BMW Group in America, the limited-edition release will pay homage to the original 8 Series and, to that end, will mark the end of its production run with a host of nostalgic design cues. The car, based on the M850i xDrive Gran Coupe, will be limited to just 500 units, with buyers able to choose from some excellent colour finishes including Bright Red, Mauritius Blue, Cosmos Black, Oxford Green and Daytona Violet. It also comes with a carbon fibre roof adorned with M tri-colour stripes, special 20-inch alloy wheels and the M Sport Professional package - all as standard. This also includes upgraded brakes, black calipers and additional black exterior trim. Inside, buyers can expect plenty of luxury with Alcantara and black Merino leather seats featuring diamond stitching. Alcantara also lines the headliner, dashboard and parts of the door panels. Matte carbon fibre accents and M tri-colour stitching are also used throughout. As you'd expect with the 8 Series, it packs plenty of oomph - retaining the same power as the standard M850i, with a 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 producing 523 horsepower. That's good for a 0-60 mph time of 3.9 seconds and a top speed of 155 mph. The 8 Series' discontinuation was announced at the beginning of the year and various sources close to BMW have told us it will cease globally sometime in the middle of 2026. BMW M135 is a power-packed hot-hatch that's precise, solid & slick… everything about it is 'sheer driving pleasure' Sadly, no direct successor has been planned. The Edition M Heritage has been quoted at a price of $131,575, which is roughly £97,000 ,and a fair chunk pricier than the standard M850i Gran Coupe. The 2026 BMW M850i Edition M Heritage Takes a Colorful Page from 8-Series History
BMW is keeping the 8-Series flame alive a little while longer with a new special edition celebrating the model's heritage, announced Thursday at Monterey Car Week — and it's called the 2026 BMW M850i Edition M Heritage. Only 500 of these special edition 8-Series will be made, all of them in Gran Coupe form. What's so special about this model? BMW is celebrating the original 8-Series and giving folks the option to choose one of five exterior colors that the E31 generation debuted in at the 1989 Frankfurt Motor Show. These include Bright Red, Mauritius Blue metallic, Cosmos Black metallic, Oxford Green metallic and Daytona Violet metallic. Additionally, the carbon fiber roof comes standard, and BMW adorns it with model-specific M tri-color accents stripes. It's also fitted with 20-inch bi-color wheels wrapped in summer performance tires, the M Sport Professional Package (which includes M Sport brakes with black calipers) and both the Shadowline light and trim packages. The interior doesn't try to upstage the exterior, as the only color available is black. That said, it's a luxurious black, as the combination of Individual Full Black Merino leather and Alcantara upholstery on the seats is unique to this special edition. The seats feature a non-illuminated M logo, and Alcantara is generously used throughout the interior; also unique from other 8-Series is a matte finish carbon fiber trim for the center console. You'll be able to instantly tell this 8-Series apart upon stepping in thanks to door sill plates reading 'M850i Edition M Heritage' and a cupholder cover bearing '1/500' script. Everything else is business as usual for the M850i Gran Coupe. The 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 under the hood is unchanged, sending 523 horsepower and 553 pound-feet of torque through an eight-speed automatic transmission. You won't have to worry about ticking any option boxes either, as every possible one is automatically included in this special edition. Just pick one of the five colors, and go on your merry way. The whole package is priced at $131,575, which is $21,000 more than a standard M850i Gran Coupe. Production begins in November, and BMW promises deliveries in the first quarter of 2026. The big grand tourer, rumored to end production next year, is getting a limited Edition M Heritage model to celebrate the original car from the 1990s. And the colors are excellent . Based on the M850i xDrive Gran Coupe and limited to just 500 examples, the Edition M Heritage pays homage to the E31-generation 8 Series , sold from 1990 to 1999, with an array of colors available on the original car. Buyers will have a choice between Bright Red, Mauritius Blue, Cosmos Black, Oxford Green, or Daytona Violet. The special touches don't stop there. No matter which color you choose, the Edition M Heritage comes with a carbon roof with M tri-color stripes, along with special 20-inch alloy wheels. The M Sport Professional package, usually an optional extra, also comes standard. It adds things like better brakes, black calipers, and more black exterior trim. There are more changes inside. The M Sport seats are sheathed in Alcantara and black Merino leather stitched in a diamond pattern. That means things like the Bowers & Wilkins Diamond Surround Sound System and the Driving Assistance Professional Package are included. The only thing the customer needs to do is pick a paint color. That means it'll be expensive. The Edition M Heritage carries an MSRP of $131,575, including a $1,175 destination charge—just over $23,000 more than a normal M850i Gran Coupe.
