
BMW Showcases Limited-Edition M850i During Monterey Car Week
Buyers can choose from five original E31 8-series color profiles.
The limited run of only 500 M850i special-edition cars comes at a cost, starting at $130,400.
The original 8-series launched in 1990 with a wind-tunnel-designed body and a proud smirk of a front fascia. The E31 might smirk all the more had it been at the reveal of its successor during the 2025 Monterey Car Week.

BMW announced a special run for fans of the 8-series Gran Coupe, the 2026 M850i Edition M Heritage. Limited to 500 examples worldwide, the M Heritage pays tribute to the first 8-series with exterior paint colors that reference the original offering first shown at the 1989 Frankfurt Motor Show. Buyers can choose from Bright Red, Mauritius Blue metallic, Cosmos Black metallic, Oxford Green metallic, and Daytona Violet metallic. Rounding out the exterior dress-up are two-tone Orbit Grey 20-inch dual-spoke alloy wheels clad in summer performance tires and a carbon-fiber roof with subtle three-color M stripes.
The M goodies don't stop there. Inside, the Heritage edition offers M Sport seats finished in BMW diamond-stitched black leather and faux suede. The soft stuff continues up over the headliner, dashboard, and upper door panels. The seats, door panels, and belts also get sporty red and blue tri-stripe stitching. Matte finish carbon fiber covers the center console, out of which juts a glass shift lever to remind everyone that this isn't just a performance car, but a luxury one as well.

Less subtle reminders can be found in the M badge on the front headrests, the numerous places sporting the model's full name—"M850i Edition M Heritage"—and a shout-out to the exclusivity with "1/500" displayed on the doorsills.
Don't worry that you'll have to check all these boxes on the order form. The M850i Edition M Heritage comes in one configuration only, based on the M850i xDrive Gran Coupe with all the cosmetic upgrades previously mentioned and popular features like a Bowers & Wilkins Diamond surround sound system and BMW's driver's assistance package, all included in its $130,400 pricetag.

Beneath the retro colors and M callouts, the Heritage edition makes use of the same engine and chassis setup as a top-trim M850i, which means that under the hood is a 523-hp 4.4-liter twin-turbo V-8 sending 553 lb-ft of torque through an eight-speed automatic transmission and to the ground via all four wheels.
We're expecting no change in performance from non-special editions, so the Heritage model should go from zero to 60 mph in 3.9 seconds according the BMW, and 3.5 seconds according to our test team. It should stop well from its electronically-limited 155-mph top speed thanks to M Sport brakes.
We like all the flash of the M850i Edition M Heritage, but with so much fanfare and so many M stripes, we're curious why BMW didn't just go all in and make a special-edition M8 Gran Coupe. Customers interested in the M Heritage can place orders now, with production planned for November 2025 and deliveries in early 2026.

Austin Dillon makes NASCAR Cup playoffs with redemptive victory at Richmond
RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Austin Dillon left no doubt this time that he will make the NASCAR Cup Series playoffs with his second consecutive victory at Richmond Raceway. A year after his championship eligibility was revoked for wrecking two drivers on the final lap, Dillon grabbed a playoff berth Saturday night with a clean run to the checkered flag on the 0.75-mile oval. The Richard Childress Racing driver outdueled Ryan Blaney over the final 100 laps, seizing control with a shrewd strategy call to pit his No. 3 Chevrolet four laps earlier than the Team Penske driver's No. 12 Ford. Dillon, who led 107 of 400 laps, won by 2.471 seconds over Alex Bowman. Blaney faded to third, followed by Joey Logano and Austin Cindric. With his sixth career victory, Dillon became the 14th race winner to lock into the 16-driver field for the Cup playoffs, which are contested over the final 10 races of the season. The regular season will conclude next Saturday night at Daytona International Speedway, where the final two playoff drivers will be confirmed. Streak over After a consistent start to his season, Chase Elliott is in a slump heading into the playoffs. The 2020 Cup champion finished last at Richmond and failed to finish for the first time since last October at Las Vegas Motor Speedway (27 races ago). 'I think Kyle just didn't know that we were trying to squeeze by the wreck on the bottom,' Elliott said. 'We had a good start to the night, and it just slowly unraveled until it finally fell apart. Since briefly taking the points lead after his June 28 win at Atlanta, the seven-time Most Popular Driver has finished outside the top 10 in five of seven races. If you can do those things, then I think you will have a better case to having two races here.' Back to reality A week after his fourth consecutive Cup victory on a street or road course, rookie Shane van Gisbergen finished an impressive 14th at Richmond after scraping the wall twice in qualifying and starting 27th. Though the New Zealand driver said he feels more competitive and comfortable on short tracks such as Richmond, his inexperience remains a major hurdle. At Richmond, the rookie tried to improve by studying the laps of Hamlin and Trackhouse Racing teammate Ross Chastain. 'Different tracks might be different people,' van Gisbergen said. Chase Elliott gets wrecked moments after avoiding Richmond pileup
Just a couple of laps short of the halfway point in Saturday night's NASCAR Cup race at Richmond Raceway, chaos broke out as drivers battled in the middle of the field. After contact with Ross Chastain and Brad Keselowski, Busch dove to the bottom of the track in an effort to get under Chase Briscoe. Busch ran into the back of Briscoe instead, sending him spinning up the track. Justin Haley plowed into the accident scene, sustaining race-ending damage while several other cars made contact as they attempted to slow down and avoid the spinning car. Chase Elliott was one of the drivers lucky enough to navigate the way through the wreck, but his good fortune would not last. Just as he cleared the smoke and carnage, he collided with Busch as the No. 8 Richard Childress Racing Chevrolet came back down the track. Elliott crashed hard, nearly taking teammate William Byron with him as he slammed the outside wall. His race was over, suffering his first DNF of the 2025 season and ending his shot at the regular season championship. 'I have no idea what happened," said Elliott after being released from the infield care center. "I saw them crashing and were all stacking up, trying to get stopped. After the wreck was over, I thought we were done wrecking and I was just trying to squeak by. I guess somebody didn't know I was down there. I guess Kyle didn't know I was to the left. 'Whoever was next to me [Zane Smith] and myself were trying to get through the accident, and we were coming through there at a decent rate. Unfortunately, Kyle just didn't know that we were on the bottom. Hate that. We had a good start to the night, and it slowly unraveled until it finally fell apart. Here is what the firm said: 'Another top contributor during the quarter was Lithia Motors, Inc. (NYSE:LAD) one of the largest global automotive retailers operating in North America and the United Kingdom. In late June, the auto industry was impacted by a cyberattack on CDK Global's dealership management system, which runs all back-office functions at Lithia as well as over 85% of all franchised dealers in the United States. In its Q2 2024 earnings release, LAD reported a -6.4% decline in same-store sales, driven primarily by a -4.7% decline in new vehicle units as LAD was not able to process sale transactions late in the quarter due to the CDK outage.
