It's all well and good spending £200million on Sesko and Co. but Arsenal defeat exposes a HUGE hole Man Utd need to fill
MANCHESTER UNITED have splashed the cash this summer but the goalkeeper position remains a concern. Here are SunSport's key takeaways from the narrow 1-0 defeat at home to Arsenal. 2 Ruben Amorim has a big problem to fix at Old Trafford Credit: Alamy 2 Altay Bayindir was at fault for Arsenal's goal Credit: Getty No 1 ISSUE United have been linked with Gianluigi Donnarumma and David de Gea in recent weeks, and surely they will sign a keeper before the window shuts. Ruben Amorim has faith in Andre Onana — even if a lot of the fans do not — but he did not consider him ready to start here. The Cameroonian has missed the whole of pre-season with a hamstring injury. So Altay Bayindir, who has played throughout the build-up to the season, got the nod — and ended up costing his team the game. He should have been stronger under pressure from William Saliba and flapped a corner on to the head of Riccardo Calafiori. READ MORE ON MAN UTD MAN UTD RATINGS Bayindir costs his team the game but Mbeumo has hugely promising debut Bayindir has had problems with set-pieces before. Amorim and sporting director Jason Wilcox have two weeks to come up with a solution before the end of the transfer window. BEST FREE BETS AND BETTING SIGN UP OFFERS NO GOALS — AGAIN United mustered just 44 goals in the Prem last season — and here they were starting with a blank again. The Red Devils have spent £200million sprucing up their forward line this summer, and there were encouraging signs from Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha. Ex-Prem ref says there was no foul on Man Utd's goalkeeper by William Saliba during Arsenal loss But new £74m centre-forward Benjamin Sesko stayed on the bench until the 65th minute. On a couple of occasions before then there were crosses into the box but nobody there to put them away. Amorim said on Friday he believes Sesko can be United's No 9 for many years to come — and that is why they spent so heavily on him. So it seemed a strange call to leave him on the bench for so long. Clearly the fans agreed as he was given a huge ovation when he arrived. A couple of late half-chances went begging but the Slovenian did enough to show he will be a threat. MIDFIELD STILL AN ISSUE United have abandoned their bid to land Carlos Baleba at least until next summer because of Brighton's asking price. There is an interest in Sporting's Morten Hjulmand, while United are one of several clubs who admire Adam Wharton of Crystal Palace. But there is a chance they will not sign another outfield player, and fans will be worried about the options in midfield. Casemiro was excellent in Europe last season but did not have the same impact in Prem matches, while we are still waiting to see the best of Manuel Ugarte. United are going to be more exciting to watch this season — that is clear already — but will they still have a soft centre?

Bruno Fernandes' double gives Ruben Amorim his first pre-season win in front of packed US crowd
Despite the victory in New Jersey, one high profile United player continued his poor form from last season MAN UTD 2 WEST HAM 1 Bruno Fernandes' double gives Ruben Amorim his first pre-season win in front of packed US crowd BRUNO Fernandes' double gave Ruben Amorim his first win of the pre-season campaign - and showed just how important it was to keep him at Old Trafford. Amorim gave his captain the choice of staying at the club or accepting the £100m Saudi offer. Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up 2 United captain Bruno Fernandes netted two in his side's friendly win over West Ham in New Jersey Credit: Getty And the Portuguese boss was given a reminder of what his fellow countryman brings to the party with the early goals in either half that ensured the majority of the 50,000-plus inside the MetLIfe Stadium went home happy. Fernandes put United in front inside just five minutes, rolling home from the spot after calamitous keeping from West Ham No 1 Alphonse Areola. And the United skipper was equally deadly when he had time to line one up from the edge of the box soon after the restart, Areole helpless once again. On a sultry evening which saw another run-out for £62.5m Brazilian Matheus Cunha - although no sighting of the club's other new big money recruit, Bryan Mbeumo - United were far too good for Graham Potter's side. Yet Rasmus Hojlund's struggles to find the net continued, the Dane slamming a first minute shot against the post but then failing to hit the target when well placed, before being left begging for a Fernandes pass that would have gifted him a sitter. For Amorim, though, the sight of Cunha and Fernandes showing early promise of a real understanding will have been the biggest boost, although Patrick Dorgu also impressed. But while a victory was useful, the United boss will have been concerned at how easily Tomas Soucek slipped into the central hole left by Manuel Ugarte and Kobbie Mainoo, leaving youngster Ayden Heaven exposed as Jarrod Bowen slammed home for West Ham. In pre-season games, though, such things are less important and a week after United were limp and lifeless against Leeds in Stockholm, their intensity levels were much better. Hojlund's early strike was soon followed by the United opener, with Areola dropping a simple ball and then compounding his felony by clumsily and blatantly ploughing through Heaven for the most obvious penalty you could imagine. Bruno made no mistake, sending the hapless Areola the wrong way and with West Ham pretty woeful, the surprise was that United, without £71m Mbeumo - not involved at all after only completing his move to the club on Monday - did not immediately extend their advantage. Dorgu's pace was a constant menace, Hojlund was wastefully high from 16 yards - Amorim's slap of the head a sign of his feelings - and the lively Cunha shot straight at Areola. Leny Yoro should have converted a Fernandes corner before the flag rightly denied Amad Diallo from a clever Manuel Ugarte pass, although Soucek should have made them pay when he nodded tamely at the exposed Altay Bayindir from six yards. Amorim was asked for his interval views at the break - a sign of things to come under the new Prem TV contract coming into force this season - while cameras were also briefly allowed in the United dressing room. 2 West Ham's Nayef Aguerd hugs teammate Guido Rodriguez Credit: Getty Frustrations would have grown when Fernandes failed to get the ball past Areola after racing through the middle, when a simple pass would have given Hojlund a tap-in. But the captain soon made up for the miss with an exquisite curler into the corner from the edge of the box, only for that misfiring central midfield to be punished as Bowen was too cute for Heaven before drilling home. Bowen could even have nicked a draw with the last shot of the game, Bayindir making a smart save. His goal, and the sight of Lucas Paqueta - who is set to be exonerated by the FA probe into alleged betting offences - were positives for Potter. He needs a few more.

Ruben Amorim told how many signings Man Utd still need to stop Old Trafford becoming a 'Theatre of Nightmares' again at the start of 2025-26 season
United having quiet summer Cunha the only major new signing Concerns raised over Old Trafford atmosphere WHAT HAPPENED? WHAT HAPPENED? Amorim was tipped to completely overhaul the United squad after their dismal 15th finish in the Premier League last season, but it has been an eerily quiet summer at Old Trafford so far. Former Atletico Madrid and Wolves forward Matheus Cunha has been the only major new signing through the door, while United have also confirmed the arrival of 18-year-old full-back Diego Leon from Paraguayan outfit Cerro Porteno. Advertisement THE BIGGER PICTURE THE BIGGER PICTURE United are also chasing Brentford's Bryan Mbeumo, but the two clubs have yet to reach an agreement on a final fee, and with the Red Devils' pre-season campaign set to start on July 19, supporters are growing impatient with the lack of concrete movement in the transfer market, especially after seeing rivals Manchester City, Liverpool and Arsenal all make significant early changes to their squads. Two-time Premier League winner Paul Parker is also concerned, and has warned United's part-owners, INEOS, that the negative atmosphere around Old Trafford will only worsen if there continues to be no urgency in the recruitment department. WHAT PARKER SAID WHAT PARKER SAID When asked how many more signings United need to challenge for a place in Europe next season, former United defender Parker told GOAL - in association with Gameshub: "For Man Utd to just compete against anyone and not let themselves down, they need at least four more signings. They can't carry on where they are at this moment in time because they'll start next season and it will still be negative in the dressing room and with the fans. It became the Theatre of Nightmares towards the end of last season." Advertisement WHAT NEXT FOR MAN UTD? WHAT NEXT FOR MAN UTD? According to The Athletic, United are also having trouble raising extra funds for new signings through player sales. Amorim wanted the "unhappy" quartet of Marcus Rashford, Alejandro Garnacho, Jadon Sancho and Antony sold before the start of pre-season, but United have yet to find any potential suitors willing to match the players' wage demands. As it stands, Amorim is still working with a squad largely assembled by his predecessor, Erik ten Hag, and it remains to be seen if he is given the resources to rebuild the team in his image.
