BRUNO Fernandes' double gave Ruben Amorim his first win of the pre-season campaign - and showed just how important it was to keep him at Old Trafford.
Amorim gave his captain the choice of staying at the club or accepting the £100m Saudi offer.

And the Portuguese boss was given a reminder of what his fellow countryman brings to the party with the early goals in either half that ensured the majority of the 50,000-plus inside the MetLIfe Stadium went home happy.
Fernandes put United in front inside just five minutes, rolling home from the spot after calamitous keeping from West Ham No 1 Alphonse Areola.
And the United skipper was equally deadly when he had time to line one up from the edge of the box soon after the restart, Areole helpless once again.
On a sultry evening which saw another run-out for £62.5m Brazilian Matheus Cunha - although no sighting of the club's other new big money recruit, Bryan Mbeumo - United were far too good for Graham Potter's side.
Yet Rasmus Hojlund's struggles to find the net continued, the Dane slamming a first minute shot against the post but then failing to hit the target when well placed, before being left begging for a Fernandes pass that would have gifted him a sitter.
For Amorim, though, the sight of Cunha and Fernandes showing early promise of a real understanding will have been the biggest boost, although Patrick Dorgu also impressed.
But while a victory was useful, the United boss will have been concerned at how easily Tomas Soucek slipped into the central hole left by Manuel Ugarte and Kobbie Mainoo, leaving youngster Ayden Heaven exposed as Jarrod Bowen slammed home for West Ham.
In pre-season games, though, such things are less important and a week after United were limp and lifeless against Leeds in Stockholm, their intensity levels were much better.
Hojlund's early strike was soon followed by the United opener, with Areola dropping a simple ball and then compounding his felony by clumsily and blatantly ploughing through Heaven for the most obvious penalty you could imagine.
Bruno made no mistake, sending the hapless Areola the wrong way and with West Ham pretty woeful, the surprise was that United, without £71m Mbeumo - not involved at all after only completing his move to the club on Monday - did not immediately extend their advantage.
Dorgu's pace was a constant menace, Hojlund was wastefully high from 16 yards - Amorim's slap of the head a sign of his feelings - and the lively Cunha shot straight at Areola.
Leny Yoro should have converted a Fernandes corner before the flag rightly denied Amad Diallo from a clever Manuel Ugarte pass, although Soucek should have made them pay when he nodded tamely at the exposed Altay Bayindir from six yards.
Amorim was asked for his interval views at the break - a sign of things to come under the new Prem TV contract coming into force this season - while cameras were also briefly allowed in the United dressing room.

Frustrations would have grown when Fernandes failed to get the ball past Areola after racing through the middle, when a simple pass would have given Hojlund a tap-in.
But the captain soon made up for the miss with an exquisite curler into the corner from the edge of the box, only for that misfiring central midfield to be punished as Bowen was too cute for Heaven before drilling home.
Bowen could even have nicked a draw with the last shot of the game, Bayindir making a smart save.
His goal, and the sight of Lucas Paqueta - who is set to be exonerated by the FA probe into alleged betting offences - were positives for Potter. He needs a few more.

The Blues have rejected a loan bid from Bayern Munich for Nkunku, 27, preferring a £50million sale to raise the funds to buy Garnacho for the same price. The Red Devils want at least £50m for the 21-year-old winger. It's understood that Garnacho only wants Chelsea, which is the main reason why he is still at Carrington nearly three months after boss Ruben Amorim told him to find a new club. The relationship between the two sides has completely broken down and on Sunday a mural of Garnacho close to Old Trafford was defaced by fans. Alejandro Garnacho issued with new snub as Man Utd negotiate Chelsea transfer

Manchester United kicked off their Premier League season with a 1-0 defeat to Arsenal at Old Trafford on Sunday, a game where Alejandro Garnacho was unsurprisingly absent, with his United career all but over Wantaway Manchester United misfit Alejandro Garnacho will not play for Argentina in their upcoming World Cup qualifiers at the start of September. ‌ Garnacho is set to leave United before the transfer window closes, if the Red Devils and Chelsea can come to an agreement over a transfer fee. The Blues are pushing hard to take the young winger to Stamford Bridge, with United ready to cash in if the money is right. It's understood Garnacho has already agreed terms with Chelsea. ‌ The 21-year-old has been training on his own at Carrington for a month and has been frozen out of the squad completely by Ruben Amorim, with his comments and subsequent social media antics following the Europa League Final the last straw for the United head coach. Garnacho had initially fallen foul of Amorim when he was dropped for the Manchester derby last December, before being reintegrated back into the squad - unlike Marcus Rashford, who was loaned to Aston Villa in January. ‌ Unsurprisingly, Garnacho was not involved in United's Premier League opener against Arsenal at Old Trafford on Sunday. Now he has been left out of the Argentina squad for the World Cup qualifying fixtures with Venezuela and Ecuador next month. Garnacho, who made his international debut as a teenager in 2023, was a consistent selection by boss Lionel Scaloni in 2024, but has been left on the outside looking in during 2025. During United's pre-season tour of the United States, Amorim was asked whether it was a shame it hadn't worked out with Garnacho and himself. He said: "I think Garnacho you can understand and you can see, he's talented, he's a really talented boy. And sometimes things don't work out. "You cannot explain specifically what it is. But I have the feeling, I think it's clear that Garnacho wants a different thing with a different leadership. And I can understand that. "So I think it's not a problem. Sometimes you adapt to one guy, you have the connection. Other times, you want a new challenge. So, we try to make everything okay to all the parts. To the club, to the coach and to the players. So, it's a natural thing in football." There are five Premier League based players in the Argentina squad: Emi Martinez (Aston Villa), Cristian Romero ( Tottenham), Julio Soler ( Bournemouth), Alexis Mac Allister ( Liverpool) and Claudio Echeverri ( Manchester City).

Chelsea failed in bid to sign Tottenham's new £55m 'top-class' star

Chelsea failed in an attempt to sign Tottenham's new £55m 'top-class' star Mohammed Kudus earlier this summer, according to reports. Kudus joined Spurs from West Ham in July and has shined since his switch to north London, conjuring up two assists on his Premier League debut for his new club on Saturday in a 3-0 win over Burnley. Spurs head coach Thomas Frank has already labelled Kudus' one-on-one skills and ability to create opportunities as 'top-class' following his arrival. It has now emerged via The Sun that Chelsea saw a player-plus-cash bid for Kudus rejected by West Ham before he moved to Tottenham. Metro's new weekly football newsletter: In The Mixer. Exclusive analysis, FPL tips and transfer talk sent straight to your inbox every Friday – sign up, it's an open goal. Kudus was said to be 'high on Chelsea's list' and the Ghana international had even agreed personal terms before Spurs hijacked the deal. Chelsea and West Ham did not strike an agreement with the Blues offering £20m plus Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall for Kudus. The west London club felt Dewsbury-Hall was worth £30m – but West Ham did not agree with their valuation – and only saw him as a £20m player. Spurs then swooped in with an initial offer of £50m, which eventually went up to £55m after West Ham negotiated a slightly higher price. Kudus ended up agreeing terms with Spurs and the rest is history as Chelsea eventually sold Dewsbury-Hall to Everton instead for £29m. Tottenham icon Ledley King says Kudus is a 'great signing' for his former club after Chelsea missed out on the player. 'Mohammed Kudus looks [like] a great signing,' King told BetMGM. 'From what I've seen, Spurs have signed a very exciting player. 'I was really impressed with him at West Ham – when Spurs beat them 4-1 at home [last season], he was their best player by quite some margin before he got sent off. 'He's one of those players who looks like he can cause problems whenever he gets the ball. More Trending 'Hopefully with a bit of support around him, he can take his game to the next level and help Spurs progress.' Former Spurs manager Harry Redknapp, meanwhile, told football betting site BetVictor: 'I thought Kudus was very bright [in the Super Cup defeat to PSG]. 'No [James] Maddison for most of the season is a huge blow for the team and for the lad himself, I was gutted for him. 'Kudus has come in, though, and I think he could be a very, very good addition.'
