Union minister G Kishan Reddy: Centre won't favour Andhra Pradesh over Telangana or vice versa; calls for amicable water-sharing

HYDERABAD: Union minister G Kishan Reddy on Friday said that the Centre would not show any favouritism towards Andhra Pradesh at the expense of Telangana, or vice versa. He emphasised the importance of both states working together to resolve water-sharing issues amicably. Addressing the media, he advised both states to address their concerns constructively. He also questioned chief minister A Revanth Reddy, asking why, despite taking office in Telangana well before Chandrababu Naidu did in AP, has not presented a plan for water usage and irrigation projects. He noted that within six months, Naidu proposed the Banakcharla project. "The chief minister is only busy making false accusations against me and the Centre," he added. "However, if both states agree to some other arrangement, we are ready to consider it, but it must be done through legislation," he stated. He also countered Revanth's allegations regarding Muslim reservations in BJP-ruled states, clarifying that such reservations have been in place since the British era and are based on profession, not religion. "I have said many times before that BC leaders should consider this: when 10% is allocated for Muslim reservations from within the 42% quota, BCs are left with only 32%. The Congress govt must answer this - are they increasing reservation for BCs or reducing their share?" He also noted that the Central govt is willing to build an airport in Warangal, but the previous administration failed to allocate land for the project. He mentioned that the MMTS is being expanded till Yadagirigutta. The initial cost for the MMTS extension to Yadagirigutta was estimated at ₹330 crore, but the budget may increase. Additionally, he recalled that a new railway station at the Komuravelli Mallanna pilgrimage site was inaugurated by the CM of Madhya Pradesh, and that work on the station is nearly complete.

Centre okays Rs 100 crore to extend MMTS from Ghatkesar to Yadagirigutta

HYDERABAD: The Union Ministry of Railways has allocated Rs 100 crore in the current financial year for the long-pending Ghatkesar-Yadagirigutta section under the Multi-Modal Transport System (MMTS) railway line project, following a representation made by Bhuvanagiri MP Chamala Kiran Kumar Reddy during zero hour in the Lok Sabha earlier this year. The Ministry of Railways has taken up the project on its behalf, in the event of non-deposit of the state government's share of funds. In a letter addressed to the MP on Wednesday, Minister of State for Railways Ravneet Singh recalled the issue raised on April 3, 2025, and clarified that the proposed 33-km third railway line between Ghatkesar and Yadadri was originally sanctioned in 2016 under the MMTS on a cost-sharing basis with the state government. However, the project could not move forward due to the non-deposit of the state's share of funds. The estimated cost of the project remains Rs 412 crore. The latest budgetary provision of Rs 100 crore marks a significant step towards reviving the long-delayed infrastructure project, aimed at improving connectivity to the temple town of Yadagirigutta. In a statement, MP Kiran Kumar Reddy thanked Ashwini Vaishnaw for sanctioning the funds.

₹100 crore allocated for Ghatkesar-Yadagirigutta MMTS extension; MP Chamala thanks Ministry of Railways

Bhongir Congress MP Chamala Kiran Kumar Reddy has thanked the Ministry of Railways for allocating ₹100 crore in the 2025–26 financial year for the long-pending extension of the Multi-Modal Transport System (MMTS) from Ghatkesar to Yadagrigutta (Raigiri), a 33-km stretch sanctioned in 2016. In a post made on X, the MP said that he had raised the issue during the Zero Hour in the Lok Sabha on April 3. In a written response, Union Minister of State for (Railways) Ravneet Singh informed the MP that the Ministry of Railways had decided to fully fund the project, which was originally taken up on a cost-sharing basis with the Telangana government. Reason for delay in execution The Union Minister said that the delay in execution was due to the State not depositing its share of the estimated cost. 'However, the project is now being taken up with complete funding by the Railways,' Mr. Singh said, adding that the ₹100 crore allocation for the current financial year would depend on the progress of the work and the demand from the executing agency. Land acquisition for the extension is currently underway, and Mr. Reddy assured that he would coordinate with the concerned agencies to expedite the process The MP also thanked Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw for the full financial backing of the project.

Eatala Rajender sticks to his guns on KLIP

BJP Malkajgiri MP and former Finance Minister Eatala Rajender has stuck to his guns on the Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Project (KLIP) getting Cabinet clearance under the KCR regime and offered to quit politics if he was proved wrong. Addressing a press conference on Thursday, to highlight his one year work as an MP, Mr. Rajender was irked when questioned about his stance on the controversial project as told to the Justice Ghose Committee. 'I am being unnecessarily targeted. Doesn't Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy know that no project can be built without Cabinet clearance? Isn't his Cabinet meeting regularly to discuss such issues? There are three ministers in his own Cabinet who were present in the BRS government too, why can't he ask them? I can also state that former Chief Minister KCR even went to the extent of telling various departments not to take unilateral decisions but get them cleared in the Cabinet,' he maintained. The BJP leader said he was ready to provide evidence of the official papers to the media to prove his point. He was also among the first to have opposed the irrigation projects taken up to benefit Andhra Pradesh like the Pothireddypadu work during the Y.S. Rajashekara Reddy Government. Progress report Top BJP leaders, including Union Minister for Coal & Mines G. Kishan Reddy, will be attending a meeting at Imperial Gardens in Secunderabad on June 22, where he will present his one year progress card (works taken up in the constituency) with an exhibition. It will also highlight the Modi Government's initiatives in the third term. Mr. Rajender spoke about the ongoing national highway works, completion of MMTS phase two, Cherlapally terminal station and Malkajgiri station improvement, and proposed flyovers connecting Medchal and Shamirpet. He demanded that the ₹300 crore compensation to be paid to the Secunderabad Cantonment Board (SCB) by the government for the proposed flyovers should be utilised to build housing for the poor in the area itself. Senior leaders S. Malla Reddy and others were present.

Growing airport traffic in Hyderabad drives demand for better connectivity

HYDERABAD: As passenger numbers at the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) in Hyderabad climb steadily, efficient transport links have become increasingly vital. Among the key options is Umdanagar Railway Station, situated approximately 6 km from the airport. Functioning as a major suburban rail hub, it connects travellers across the city via the Multi-Modal Transport System (MMTS), with 22 daily trains operating to and from the station. This service offers a low-cost and reliable transit alternative for airport commuters. Umdanagar Station currently handles 1,800 to 2,000 passengers daily. Recognising its strategic role, the station is undergoing a Rs 12.37 crore renovation under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme to upgrade passenger amenities and infrastructure. However, passengers have reported challenges, including frequent MMTS train cancellations and extended halts at certain stations. Pushpak AC bus services, operated by TGSRTC, provide another crucial public transport link to RGIA. The corporation runs approximately 60 Pushpak services daily, with buses departing every 20 minutes. Fares range from Rs 50 to Rs 300 depending on the boarding point. Beyond individual tickets, the service has gained popularity among frequent travellers and airport employees, with around 2,000 monthly bus passes (costing Rs 5,000 each, excluding GST) currently in use. Looking ahead, long-term solutions are progressing to streamline airport access further. The recent approval of Hyderabad Metro's Phase 2B project marks a significant milestone. This 86.1-km expansion, jointly funded by the state and Union governments at an estimated cost of Rs 19,579 crore, includes a pivotal 39.6-km corridor linking RGIA at Shamshabad to Future City. Hyderabad's growth is driving higher airport traffic, and demand for seamless, affordable connectivity remains strong. While Pushpak buses and MMTS trains currently bridge critical gaps, commuters continue to press authorities for more punctual and reliable services.
