T sees sharp rise in deaths on rly tracks
Hyderabad: Rail-related accidents in Telangana have reached alarming proportions, with an average of three fatalities reported daily. The growing frequency of such incidents has become a major concern for railway safety authorities in the state. According to railway crime records, over 1,300 individuals lost their lives in rail related incidents across Telangana in 2024. These incidents were primarily due to trespassing, crossing tracks dangerously, using mobile phones, and falling from moving trains, officials say. Accidental deaths—one of three categories in death cases—have risen sharply, rising from 408 in 2021 to 735 in 2024. Already, 460 fatalities have been recorded on the tracks in the first four months of this year alone, with suspicious deaths and suicides contributing to 186 of them. "In Telangana, most fatal accidents occur in suburban sections, particularly near stations with MMTS services. The primary reason is passengers opting to cross the tracks instead of using foot over bridges, often in haste. Accidents also occur when individuals misjudge the speed of oncoming trains while boarding or alighting, leading to serious injuries or death." Craze for selfies, reels "More recently, youngsters have been spotted climbing onto train rooftops to shoot social media reels or dangerously positioning themselves near moving trains," said a senior South Central Railway official. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo Additionally, suicide attempts are a grim contributor. "When someone appears in front of a moving train, even if the driver applies brakes, the train needs nearly a kilometre to come to a complete stop—making it nearly impossible to avert a fatal accident," the official added. Authorities have also raised concerns about passengers seated near the doors or steps of coaches—particularly during night journeys—being at risk of accidentally falling off due to drowsiness. Travellers are advised to stay alert and avoid leaning too close to the doors, especially during overnight travel. Data from National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) further highlights the extent of the problem. Over 70% of railway accidents nationwide involve passengers either falling from trains or being struck while crossing tracks. In 2022 alone, India recorded 23,139 railway accidents, resulting in 2,457 injuries and 20,792 fatalities. Trespassing on railway tracks and bid to board or alight from moving trains, is not only life-threatening but also a criminal offence. Under Section 147 of the Railways Act, 1989, trespassers may face jail for up to six months, fine of 1,000, or both.

He said that under Prime Minister Modi's leadership, the railway system across the country is rapidly developing. Currently, 1,300 railway stations have been undergoing development simultaneously in India, an unprecedented feat. 'In Telangana, 40 railway stations are also being developed concurrently. By 2026, these stations will be designed to reflect the local culture and heritage. The Secunderabad Railway Station is receiving an investment of Rs 720 crore for its development. Prime Minister Modi has also sanctioned the construction of Komuravelli Railway Station, with Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav performing the ground-breaking ceremony. This station will be dedicated to the devotees of Komuravelli Mallanna during this year's Dussehra festival. Kishan Reddy noted that there had been a delay of 6 to 7 years in the MMTS Phase-2 project due to the previous government's negligence. Despite the lack of support from the state government, the construction of MMTS Phase-2 has commenced under Prime Minister Modi's leadership, with an investment of about Rs 1,000 crore. Work for MMTS has also been sanctioned for Yadagirigutta, which will commence soon with Rs 400 crore allocated. The Central Government is introducing 'Kavach' technology across 617 km in Telangana as a pilot project to prevent railway accidents. 'Up to now, 121 unmanned level crossings have been removed, and 203 new road under bridges, 43 railway over bridges (ROBs), and 45-foot over bridges have been constructed.' Kishan Reddy, without naming the BRS executive president, and former Municipal Administration and Urban Development Minister KT Rama Rao, contended that the former minister criticises development projects on Twitter, and urged him to understand the facts. Additionally, high-speed WiFi has been set up at 174 stations, along with 88 stalls. Prime Minister Modi laid the foundation stone for a railway manufacturing unit in Kazipet, with an investment of Rs 580 crore.

Passengers raise pitch for train halts at RK Nagar, Mlk'giri Jn
Hyderabad: With South Central Railway (SCR) operating most of the summer special trains from Charlapalli Terminal Station instead of Secunderabad Railway Station due to ongoing development works, there is a need to arrange halts at Dayanand Nagar East Railway Station (RK Nagar) and Malkajgiri Junction and introduce more MMTS to Charlapalli. In that regard, members of the travellers' association and a few daily passengers submitted representations to the concerned officials of SCR, who urged a stoppage of train services at nearby Secunderabad Railway Station. Several passengers have expressed concerns that the long-pending issue of introducing MMTS trains from Charlapalli to various destinations remains unresolved. With the increasing number of mainline trains and the operation of several special and summer trains originating and terminating at Charlapalli, the situation is becoming more challenging. Many of these trains arrive or depart late at night, and due to inadequate transportation facilities during those hours, passengers are facing significant difficulties. Additionally, there was a proposal to introduce the Satavahana Express at Malkajgiri, but no final decision has been made. Although meetings with divisional officers have successfully achieved 100 per cent punctuality, they have not resulted in the addition of new services. Noor, General Secretary, Suburban Train and Bus Travellers Association, said, 'We are frustrated after repeatedly raising this issue with the concerned officials, but our complaints have fallen on deaf ears. Several trains are now being diverted or rerouted from Charlapalli without touching Secunderabad station, which is a positive step for smoother operations and development. However, the lack of proper transportation facilities at Charlapalli terminal continues to inconvenience passengers. It would be better if the Railways introduced a few MMTS trains to improve connectivity from the terminal.' Furthermore, Suresh, a passenger, suggested that trains heading towards Nizamabad from Nalgonda and Kazipet should have a stop at Dayanand Nagar East (RK Nagar). This would allow passengers bound for Secunderabad, Umdanagar, and Hyderabad to disembark and continue their journey using state transport or personal vehicles. He also noted that the electrification work of the platform and station building appears to be complete. In the meantime, he proposed that some trains originating from Lingampalli and Secunderabad/Hyderabad could be diverted via Malkajgiri with a scheduled stop at Malkajgiri station.
