4,300 villages, just 671 ration depots: Tribals seek more PDS shops in Alluri Sitarama Raju district
VISAKHAPATNAM: The public in the newly formed Alluri Sitarama Raju district are demanding more public distribution system (PDS) shops, famously known as ration depots, as there are an insufficient number of depots in faraway places, creating problems for the tribals to get the ration. Tribals and people's organisations are demanding more ration depots by repairing the GCC depots in the district. Moreover, there are allegations that there is no supervision over the existing 671 depots for 8.91 lakh beneficiaries of 2.98 lakh ration cards. The new district has three revenue divisions, which have over 4,300 villages in 22 mandals. It is recalled that the tribal area in the combined Visakhapatnam district had only 11 mandals and around 5 lakh population with only one revenue division, Paderu. After the merger of Rampachodavaram division of East Godavari district and Chintoor of the erstwhile Khamam district, the district population increased to 9.54 lakh, enhancing two more divisions and villages from 3,200 to 4,300 in the district, whose extent increased to 12,251 square kilometres. The public is now demanding mini ration depots in the interior pockets as the existing ration depots are up to 10 km away from their habitations. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo 'We have only 671 depots for around 4,300 villages, which means 6.5 km is the average distance of each ration depot to the villages. We come all the way from our hilltop villages, and nobody cares about how we carry the ration to our villages and face hardships,' one of the villagers, M Mahesh, said. The Adivasi JAC leader, Ramarao Dora, said that the situation would be different and the hardships of tribals are more in the rainy season as bulging streams and rivulets create more problems. The Girijana Sangham leaders say that many ration depots and godowns are in a dilapidated state following the PDS ration supply at GCC depots being stopped by the previous govt. The leaders hope that the visit of Civil Supplies Minister Nadendla Manohar in Paderu division may change the situation.

Karnataka Industrial Area Development Board plans to supply Cauvery water from Yelahanka to Information Technology and Investment Region
Bengaluru: KIADB is drawing up plans to supply potable Cauvery water from BWSSB's Yelahanka pumping station to the Devanahalli General Industrial Area, better known as Information Technology and Investment Region (ITIR). Electronics manufacturing giant Foxconn, which assembles Apple iPhones, has already commenced operations in a 300-acre unit within ITIR, located between Devanahalli and Doddaballapur, near the Bengaluru Rural DC office. With no viable water source in the area and groundwater levels deeper than 1,000 feet, KIADB (Karnataka Industrial Area Development Board) sought govt assistance after investors demanded potable water for their units. The state govt recently approved 0.25 tmcft—around 708 crore litres—of drinking water for ITIR. A detailed project report (DPR) is being prepared to lay a 25km pipeline between ITIR and Pinakini Bhavana, located off Doddaballapur Road in Yelahanka. "There is a shortage of drinking water in ITIR, and hence the board is planning to supply it from Yelahanka," said Ashok Kumar, executive engineer at KIADB. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Farmer Is Tired Of People Illegally Parking On His Land And Takes Revenge Novelodge Undo "We will supply Cauvery water from BWSSB to the ITIR for only drinking purposes. The project will start soon." KIADB chief executive officer M Mahesh confirmed the plan: "The board will supply potable water for Foxconn from Yelahanka." ITIR was envisioned over 2,072 acres spread across eight villages—Byradenahalli, Doddagollahalli, Chapparadahalli, Ramanathapura, Aruvanahalli, Rabbanahalli, Linganahalli, and Konaghatta—in Bengaluru Rural district. With Foxconn operational in the first phase, KIADB has now issued notifications for acquiring more land to launch the second phase of ITIR. Officials said the demand for land in the area has grown rapidly after Foxconn's entry. The region's proximity to the Satellite Town Ring Road (STRR), Kempegowda International Airport and the Doddaballapur railway station has added to its appeal as a manufacturing hub.

GCC floats tenders for two more multi-level parking lots
Chennai: To tackle growing traffic congestion and reduce on-street parking, the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) will build two new multi-level parking (MLP) facilities in Thiruvottiyur and Kodambakkam. In Thiruvottiyur, the proposed MLP will come up on a 1,563 sqm site next to the municipality dispensary complex. With a capacity of containing 1,052 two-wheelers and a commercial complex, the project will cost 15.98 crore. In Kodambakkam, the facility is planned on a one-acre GCC-owned land near the Kodambakkam Bridge in division 132. The 1,667 sqm structure will accommodate 422 two-wheelers and 75 four-wheelers at an estimated cost of 17.86 crore. You Can Also Check: Chennai AQI | Weather in Chennai | Bank Holidays in Chennai | Public Holidays in Chennai Both structures will be fully automated and equipped with surveillance systems, security staff, drinking water facilities, toilets, and digital display boards showing real-time slot availability. Entry and exit points will have direct road access and will include automated fee collection systems. Both projects will be developed under the design, build, finance, operate and transfer (DBFOT) model — a public-private partnership, wherein a concessionaire will fund and manage the facility for 25 years before handing it back to the govt. GCC commissioner J Kumaragurubaran confirmed that tenders have been floated, and construction will begin shortly. However, concerns remain over the underutilisation of the existing MLP in T Nagar. Built under the Smart City mission at 40.79 crore, it remains largely idle with an average of just 70 vehicles using it daily — despite having a capacity for 222. Four of its six floors are reportedly non-operational, and one of three lifts is out of service. The ground floor has become a dumping yard for scrap and debris due to lack of supervision. Officials said lessons will be learnt from T Nagar's shortcomings. Stricter monitoring and private sector accountability will be ensured for the new projects, they said. Deputy mayor M Mahesh said additional MLPs are also being planned for Marina, Anna Nagar, and T Nagar as part of the city's long-term parking strategy.
