GCC floats tenders for two more multi-level parking lots

Time of India07-07-2025
Chennai: To tackle growing traffic congestion and reduce on-street parking, the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) will build two new multi-level parking (MLP) facilities in Thiruvottiyur and Kodambakkam.
In Thiruvottiyur, the proposed MLP will come up on a 1,563 sqm site next to the municipality dispensary complex. With a capacity of containing 1,052 two-wheelers and a commercial complex, the project will cost 15.98 crore.
In Kodambakkam, the facility is planned on a one-acre GCC-owned land near the Kodambakkam Bridge in division 132. The 1,667 sqm structure will accommodate 422 two-wheelers and 75 four-wheelers at an estimated cost of 17.86 crore.

Both structures will be fully automated and equipped with surveillance systems, security staff, drinking water facilities, toilets, and digital display boards showing real-time slot availability. Entry and exit points will have direct road access and will include automated fee collection systems.
Both projects will be developed under the design, build, finance, operate and transfer (DBFOT) model — a public-private partnership, wherein a concessionaire will fund and manage the facility for 25 years before handing it back to the govt.
GCC commissioner J Kumaragurubaran confirmed that tenders have been floated, and construction will begin shortly.
However, concerns remain over the underutilisation of the existing MLP in T Nagar. Built under the Smart City mission at 40.79 crore, it remains largely idle with an average of just 70 vehicles using it daily — despite having a capacity for 222. Four of its six floors are reportedly non-operational, and one of three lifts is out of service.
The ground floor has become a dumping yard for scrap and debris due to lack of supervision.
Officials said lessons will be learnt from T Nagar's shortcomings. Stricter monitoring and private sector accountability will be ensured for the new projects, they said. Deputy mayor M Mahesh said additional MLPs are also being planned for Marina, Anna Nagar, and T Nagar as part of the city's long-term parking strategy.

Coimbatore is an ideal destination for mid-sized GCCs, says CII

The large number of technical education institutions in Coimbatore and Information Technology (IT) space under construction at multiple locations make Coimbatore an ideal location to house mid-sized Global Capability Centres (GCCs), said Prashanth Subramanian, former chairman of Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), Coimbatore zone. The CII has launched an initiative to increase the visibility of Coimbatore to attract GCC investments. There are 30-35 GCCs in the district, each having 100 to 300 seaters. The domain expertise available in Coimbatore in different aspects of manufacturing, the strong presence of academia, and an existing IT eco-system all make Coimbatore an ideal location, he said. Cost and talent availability are the primary drivers of any GCC set up. Coimbatore can offer both. The local industries can grow in this space and a couple of companies have already taken the lead. 'We need more such companies,' Mr. Prashanth added. The CII plans to prioritise on local industries by creating the required visibility for them and handholding the interested companies. It also plans to tap into the alumni network of Coimbatore educational institutions. Most of them who have studied in Coimbatore have moved out. They should get the confidence that Coimbatore can be a GCC hub. The executives of Coimbatore companies who travel to other cities or countries should also talk about the capabilities of Coimbatore. When GCCs set shop here, the talent will get trained in multiple areas of work and an ecosystem will develop here to cater to global standards, he said. Expansion of Coimbatore airport remains a non-starter and is one of the main challenges that needs to be addressed. Another area that needs focus is strengthening the industry-academia collaboration, Mr. Prashanth added.

US commerce secretary says Trump really likes TikTok, but app has to move to US ownership

US President Donald Trump likes TikTok but the Chinese-owned short video app, used by some 170 million Americans, has to move to US ownership, Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick said on Sunday."The President really likes TikTok , and he said it over and over again, because, you know, it was a good way to communicate with young people," Lutnick said in an interview on Fox News Sunday with Shannon Bream."But let's face it, you can't have the Chinese have an app on 100 million American phones, that is just not okay. So, it's got to move to American ownership, it's got to move to American technology, American algorithms," he said. "I know the President is positive towards TikTok, if it can move into American hands."

ED raids conclude at Reliance Power and Infra; companies clarify no business impact

Reliance Power and Reliance Infrastructure, two listed companies formerly led by Anil Ambani, on Sunday confirmed that the recent search operations conducted by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) have officially concluded. Both companies issued formal statements to the stock exchanges, stating that they fully cooperated with the ED and will continue to do so. The ED had carried out searches on July 24 across more than 35 locations in Mumbai and Delhi as part of its ongoing investigation under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). Reports suggest the probe is related to an alleged Rs 3,000 crore bank loan fraud involving the Anil Ambani-owned Reliance Group and Yes Bank. In their statements, Reliance Power and Reliance Infrastructure clarified that these ED actions have had no impact on their business operations, financial performance, or stakeholders. They also emphasised that both companies are independent and do not have any business or financial connections with Reliance Communications (RCOM) or Reliance Home Finance Limited (RHFL). The companies further stated that Anil Dhirubhai Ambani is not currently a board member of either Reliance Power or Reliance Infrastructure. 'As a result, he does not hold any governance or operational control in these entities,' the company said in its regulatory filing. Additionally, the companies highlighted that the matters under investigation appear to concern past transactions involving RCOM or RHFL, which date back over a decade. They noted that RCOM is undergoing insolvency proceedings, while RHFL has already been resolved following a Supreme Court ruling. Despite recent media reports and the ED's action, both Reliance Power and Reliance Infra assured investors and stakeholders that they continue to operate as usual and remain committed to delivering on their business plans. On the stock market, however, both companies saw a drop in their share prices on Friday, with Reliance Power closing nearly 5 per cent lower at Rs 56.72 and Reliance Infra falling 5 per cent to Rs 342.05.
