Sambhajinagar Maharashtra National Law University students call of strike

Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar: A student-led protest at the Maharashtra National Law University-Aurangabad, in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, entered its second day on Tuesday, with students reiterating their demand for urgent reforms in university governance, academic freedom, hostel conditions, and student rights. However, the strike was called of late in the night. When contacted, MNLU Vice-Chancellor Bindu Ronald said, "We have not conceded to all of their demands. All our policies and decisions are in the larger interest of the institution as well as the students." She added that routine classes are underway, as out of the 700 students, 100 odd students had started the protests. Moreover, half of them have already returned to their routine. The students said some oral assurances have been given by the administration. The list of oral assurances received includes extending the library hours till midnight instead of 10pm, relieving an assistant professor who was holding multiple administrative responsibilities, and withdrawing the contentious uniform policy that made formal dress mandatory for first-year students. As per the revised norm, students will now have to wear uniforms only on Wednesdays and during official events. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Is this legal? While some issues like lift maintenance, mess hygiene review, uniform relaxation, and tentative changes to class schedules have seen partial progress, others such as the reinstatement of a four-month semester with a two-month internship, girls' hostel out-pass protocol, room inspections, appointment of faculty, and curfew relaxations, remain pending. A major issue is the recent extension of college hours from 9am-1pm to 9am-5pm, implemented in Jan this year. Students are demanding a rollback to the earlier 9am-1pm schedule, citing lack of time for research paper writing, moot court preparation, internships, and Model UN participation. Students have also demanded the removal of teaching faculty from administrative roles, the constitution of a grievance redressal committee, the appointment of on-site medical professionals, transparency in parent communications, guaranteed internship support, better sports infrastructure, cultural event approvals, and recognition of student communication platforms. The student body has warned that failure to resolve their concerns may lead to indefinite peaceful sit-ins and other non-violent forms of protest.

Girl forgets documents at home, neighbours and rlys' timely help saves academic year

Nagpur: Compassionate railway officials turned saviour for an anxious student whose academic year was at risk and admission to a Mumbai college was almost impossible. It was due to these officials and a neighbour couple at Riddhi Wankhede's Chhatrapati square residence that her admission was secured on the last day — Wednesday — at Maharashtra National Law University (MNLU) in Mumbai and her one crucial academic year was saved. Riddhi's BA LLB admission MNLU was almost jeopardised by a goof-up. On Wednesday, Riddhi got a slot for admission at MNLU. She boarded the Nagpur-Mumbai Duronto express from Nagpur railway station on Tuesday with her mother, Pallavi, a junior college principal. It was on the train that the mother and daughter realised that the briefcase containing Riddhi's academic documents and credentials — crucial for admission — was missing from among their luggage and had forgotten it at home. The distressed duo then approached chief ticketing inspector Yogesh Deshmukh for help. Adding to their woes, the duo was unable to recall whether the suitcase was left behind on the platform or at home. They requested Deshmukh to confirm if there was any suitcase left behind on the platform. Upon enquiring, Deshmukh said there was no unclaimed luggage on the platform. He requested the mother and daughter to remember where they kept the briefcase last. The Wankhedes said about possibly having forgotten the suitcase just beside the locked residence door. Learning that the suitcase contained documents required on the last day of admission, Deshmukh suggested the Wankhedes ensure the suitcase was brought to the Nagpur railway station, from where he would try to get it ferried to Mumbai CST on a trailing train. The entire episode was shared with senior divisional commercial manager, Central Railways, Aman Mittal. It was Mittal who instructed Deshmukh to do the needful so that Riddhi's admission was not held up. In the meantime, Wankhede's neighbours, Naresh and Rupali Jhunghare, reached Nagpur station with the briefcase. Deshmukh contacted train superintendent Soumyajit Sarkar on the Howrah-Mumbai Duronto express, which was trailing the Nagpur-Mumbai Duronto express. Sarkar was requested to collect the briefcase from Nagpur and bring it with him to Mumbai. On Wednesday, Howrah-Mumbai Duronto staff handed over the briefcase to the Wankhedes in the presence of Deshmukh. "It was a great gesture, and because of Indian Railways' staff, a law student could seamlessly get admission," said a joyful Pallavi, adding that the Jhunghares played the role of responsible neighbours.

Maharashtra CM Fadnavis, CJI BR Gavai attend inauguration of MNLU buildings; highlights 'Indianisation' of new criminal laws

Nagpur (Maharashtra), June 30 (ANI): Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Sunday said the three new criminal laws brought in by the Centre are not merely a change in names but a step towards the 'Indianisation' of the criminal justice system. Fadnavis made the remarks while attending the inauguration ceremony of the Administrative Building and Central Library Building of Maharashtra National Law University (MNLU) in Nagpur. The event was also attended by Chief Justice of India BR Gavai, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari and other dignitaries. 'We have made three new laws in our criminal justice system. The IPC of 1860 has been renamed as the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, the CrPC has been renamed as the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, and the Indian Evidence Act is now known as the Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam. This is not just a change in the nomenclature, but we have also done the Indianisation of these laws,' Fadnavis said. He further said, 'On one side, it's our Constitution, which is the greatest in the world, and the Constitution, which has evolved by many decisions of the Courts, is our fundamental value. Along with this, we must adapt ourselves to counter the evolving challenges.' The new criminal laws, Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam, came into force across India on July 1, 2024, and are aimed at improving transparency, speeding up trials, and addressing modern legal challenges. Meanwhile, the Maharashtra government on Sunday withdrew two controversial resolutions related to the implementation of the three-language policy in schools, following criticism from opposition parties. The resolutions, passed on April 16 and June 17, had made Hindi a compulsory third language in Marathi and English-medium schools, triggering backlash over concerns of linguistic imposition. Clarifying the state's stance, CM Fadnavis announced the formation of a committee to examine the implementation of the three-language formula. The committee will be headed by Dr Narendra Jadhav, a former Rajya Sabha MP and economist. 'A committee under Dr Narendra Jadhav will be formed to discuss the implementation of the three-language formula in the state... Until the committee submits its report, both government resolutions (of April 16 and June 17) have been cancelled by the government,' Fadnavis said. The CM's statements sought to allay concerns after the opposition accused the government of pushing Hindi at the expense of regional languages. The inauguration at MNLU comes amid ongoing discussions about education, language policy, and legal reform in Maharashtra and across the country. (ANI)

Red Tape Delayed MNLU Launch, HCBA PIL Facilitated Campus Development: CJI

1 2 Nagpur: Chief Justice of India (CJI) Bhushan Gavai, in his address as chancellor of Maharashtra National Law University (MNLU), Nagpur, credited a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by the High Court Bar Association (HCBA) for breaking the bureaucratic deadlock that stalled the university's development. Speaking at the inauguration of MNLU's new administrative block on Sunday, marking the completion of the first phase of campus infrastructure, CJI Gavai recounted a decade-long journey shaped by legal activism, political support, and administrative resolve. "We know that chief ministers and leaders often have good intentions when it comes to supporting the judiciary, but bureaucratic red tape can delay action. That's why the PIL by HCBA, led by counsel Sudhir Puranik, played a crucial role. When the land issue wasn't resolved, it was through the Nagpur bench of Bombay high court's orders that we secured this location, now part of an emerging education hub," Gavai said, referring to the area adjacent to IIIT and Kavikulguru Kalidas Sanskrit University. Reflecting on the university's origin, Gavai said that the idea emerged during a visit by then President Pratibha Patil to Nagpur in 2011, when justice Vikas Sirpurkar demanded a national law university in the city during HCBA's platinum jubilee celebration. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like They Were So Beautiful Before; Now Look At Them; Number 10 Will Shock You Reportingly Undo "Operations began in 2016 from two classrooms and minimal staff at the Judicial Officers Training Institute (JOTI)," he recalled. The chancellor commended his predecessor, former CJI Sharad Bobde, for laying the foundation of the campus. "Bobde entrusted me with infrastructure responsibilities, and in 2017, we held day-long deliberations to finalise a vision document rooted in modern amenities and green technology," he said. The architectural plans were finalised through a process involving a jury of five international architects, with designs exhibited at Chitnavis Centre, the CJI recalled. Gavai highlighted that then chief minister Devendra Fadnavis committed Rs500 crore to MNLU's development. "Despite changes in govt, from Fadnavis to Uddhav Thackeray and back, support remained constant. Gadkari, too, extended critical help," he noted. Gavai acknowledged contributions from former guardian minister Nitin Raut and his predecessor Chandrashekhar Bawankule, as well as senior bureaucrats like then additional chief secretary Manoj Saunik. He particularly praised justice Anil Kilor for his ongoing involvement in the project. "He has put in extra hours and meticulous planning. I am confident I'm handing over the reins to capable hands," Gavai stated. Concluding with aspirations for the future, Gavai said the institution's future lies with its students and faculty. "The govt has provided infrastructure. To become the best university in the world, it needs inspired students and dedicated academicians. I urge the faculty and students to dream big and make MNLU, Nagpur, an institution of global repute." Fellow Supreme Court judges Dipankar Datta, Prasanna Varale, and Atul Chandurkar, retired SC judge Vikas Sirpurkar, Bombay HC chief justice Alok Aradhe, HC judges Nitin Sambre, Bharti Dangre, and Anil Kilor, CM Devendra Fadnavis, union minister Nitin Gadkari, solicitor general Tushar Mehta, Maharashtra advocate general Birendra Saraf, MNLU vice-chancellor Vijender Kumar, and registrar Ragini Khubalkar shared the dais.

CM: Govt settled site debate by setting up 3 nat'l law univs

Nagpur: CM Devendra Fadnavis on Sunday said the Maharashtra govt under him took the historic decision of setting up three national law universities (NLUs)—at Mumbai, Nagpur and Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar—to settle the debate over its location nearly a decade ago. He pointed out that no state in the country has such an arrangement, Fadnavis highlighted the role played by then CJI Sharad Bobde as well as CJI Bhushan Gavai, then with the Nagpur bench of Bombay HC, Union minister Nitin Gadkari, and himself in chalking out a plan for bringing Maharashtra NLU to Nagpur. In a lighter vein, Fadnavis said he witnessed the growth of MNLU in different capacities—as CM, leader of opposition, deputy CM and then CM again. Three significant pre-Independence laws have been amended; not merely renamed but Indianised. These changes will enable the use of new technology, speed up judicial processes and increase conviction rates," said Fadnavis. As India becomes the world's fourth largest economy, the CM said, swift resolution of commercial and investment-related cases is essential to attract investment. "India's Constitution is the finest, establishing an ideal as a sustainable value. To face the challenges of a changing world, students have no better platform than this university. Challenges like cybercrime and cyber breaches exist, but artificial intelligence offers opportunities. Students must take responsibility for bringing positive changes to the legal field through technology." Putting the onus on teachers, he said the university should now provide education in innovation, creativity and modern processes, alongside academics. "Govt will fully support all initiatives to make this university the best and self-sufficient." Acknowledging Fadnavis's efforts in establishing the university and its modern facilities, Union minister Gadkari said this will lead to the institution's qualitative growth. "Updating knowledge is crucial, and this university will set an excellent example. Knowledge is a great power that must be transformed into wealth. By leveraging modern technologies like digital advancements, the university should achieve commendable performance globally," he said. Gadkari praised the institution's innovative policy and design, highlighting its vision and the potential of its bright, upcoming students.
