Alex Dunne produces stunning Formula 2 drive in Barcelona to regain championship lead
Ireland's Alex Dunne overcame two grid penalties to finish second in the Barcelona sprint race and regain the championship lead in the Formula 2. The Offaly native was among seven drivers eliminated from the main race in Monaco last weekend as he was involved in a significant collision on the opening corner. Rodin Motorsport's Dunne was given a 10-place grid penalty for the sprint race, and a further three-place grid penalty after running into the back of another car when entering the pits during Friday's free practice session. That meant he would have to start Saturday's race in 19th place but he produced another remarkable drive to climb to second, finishing just behind MP Motorsport's Richard Verschoor. His runners-up place in Spain now moves the 19-year-old to the top of the standings with 76 points ahead of Sunday's feature race, where he will have that aforementioned three-place grid penalty. Dunne is just four points clear at the top of the leaderboard, just ahead of Luke Browning (Hitech TGR) on 72 points.

Who is Franco Colapinto, Alpine's newest F1 driver?
After a disappointing start to his Formula 1 career, Australian racer Jack Doohan has been replaced at the Alpine F1 team by reserve driver Franco Colapinto. The switch will see Colapinto race for the French team from F1's next outing at Imola, for at least five rounds. Franco Colapinto, MP Motorsport Franco Colapinto, MP Motorsport Formula Motorsport Ltd Formula Motorsport Ltd Advertisement Colapinto's F2 career got off to a slow start in 2024, but his fortunes turned around following an in-season test in Spain. He then picked up his first win in the sprint race at Imola and became a regular challenger at the front. Williams continued Colapinto's preparations for F1 and he completed FP1 at the 2024 British Grand Prix, which allowed him to get acquainted with the Williams FW46. Soon, he was given the Williams seat full-time after the Grove-based team decided to part ways with American racer Sargeant. This gave Colapinto nine races to prove himself at Williams, which he did with a best finish of eighth at the 2024 Azerbaijan Grand Prix. This sparked rumours of a move to the Red Bull camp for the 2025 season, but the Argentinian's inexperience showed with a pair of violent crashes in Las Vegas and Brazil, and this put Red Bull off his scent. The 21-year-old was subsequently signed by Alpine as a reserve driver for the 2025 season, where he worked in the simulator and stood on the sidelines waiting for his time to shine. Verschoor storms to F2 victory as Weug claims historic win in F1 Academy in Jeddah
JEDDAH: Richard Verschoor produced a masterclass in tire management and racecraft to win the Formula 2 feature race in Jeddah, fighting back from ninth on the grid to claim victory for MP Motorsport. For the latest updates, follow us @ArabNewsSport The Dutch driver rebounded impressively after heartbreak in Saturday's Sprint Race, where he crossed the line first but was demoted to second by a five-second penalty for an earlier incident. Determined to make amends, Verschoor ran the alternative strategy, starting on medium tires and extending his first stint deep into the race. Despite his aging rubber, Verschoor consistently set fastest laps, showing blistering pace while others pitted early for fresher tires. His strategy paid off, and after switching to supersofts, he rejoined the track just a few seconds behind leader Jak Crawford with four laps to go. Once his tires were up to temperature, Verschoor rapidly hunted down the DAMS Lucas Oil driver, closing within DRS range and executing a clinical move into Turn 1 on the final lap to secure a stunning win. The victory moves Verschoor into the lead of the Drivers' Championship, with Josep Maria Marti — who finished fifth in the Feature Race — second overall and Leonardo Fornaroli third. Earlier in the day, Maya Weug made history by becoming the first Ferrari driver to win an F1 Academy race in Jeddah, prevailing in a dramatic and incident-packed Race 2. Starting from pole for the first time in the series, Chloe Chambers looked to have the race under control after a clean getaway, keeping ahead of a fierce scrap for second between Weug and Mercedes' Doriane Pin. Amid soaring track temperatures, Weug showed relentless pace, reeling Chambers in and battling wheel-to-wheel for the lead by Lap 3. Weug briefly seized the lead before being forced wide by Chambers, who was later handed a five-second penalty for the incident. That opened the door for an intense battle between Weug and Pin, with the two repeatedly exchanging P2 as Chambers tried to maintain her advantage. Despite crossing the finish line first, Chambers' time penalty demoted her to second, handing victory to Weug. Pin completed the podium for Mercedes. The race saw further drama as Rafaela Ferreira was hit with a 10-second penalty for spinning Emma Felbermayr of Kick Sauber, dropping both out of the points contention. Behind the front three, Alisha Palmowski secured fourth place, with Alba Larsen fifth and Aston Martin's Tina Hausmann sixth. Alpine's Nina Gademan finished seventh, while Ella Lloyd was promoted to eighth after Ferreira's penalty. Joanne Ciconte and Chloe Chong rounded out the points-scoring positions. With her victory, Weug also snatched a narrow lead at the top of the F1 Academy standings, setting up an intriguing battle for the rest of the season.

Camara Controls Chaos to Take Brilliant Bahrain F3 Win
TDT | Manama Rafael Camara showed his championship credentials with a cool and commanding drive to win the Formula 3 Feature Race in Bahrain, claiming his second victory of the season in style. The Ferrari Driver Academy rookie was made to work for it. Starting from pole, Camara briefly lost the lead to Callum Voisin after a brave dive into Turn 3 from the Rodin Motorsport driver. But the Trident racer kept his nerve and fought back, reclaiming top spot with a bold move at Turn 7 on Lap 5 — and never looked back. From there, Camara found his rhythm and began to stretch his legs. As the chaos unfolded behind, he pulled clear, managing his tyres perfectly to finish 5.7 seconds ahead of the field. 'It was a tough race at the start,' Camara said. 'But once I got back in front, I focused on keeping it clean and consistent. The car felt great — I'm really happy.' Behind him, Voisin had his hands full. He came under increasing pressure from a charging Tim Tramnitz, who produced the drive of the day. Starting a lowly 13th, the MP Motorsport driver carved his way through the pack with some brilliant overtakes — his move on Tuukka Taponen in the final laps securing a deserved podium. Further back, the midfield was anything but calm. Lap 2 saw a three-way squeeze at Turn 1 involving James Wharton, Ivan Domingues and Matias Zagazeta, while Freddie Slater was forced to retire on Lap 3 with a mechanical issue. Charlie Wurz had been in the mix early on but faded as the race wore on, losing out to Red Bull juniors Taponen and Nikola Tsolov in the closing stages. One of the standout performances came from Spain's Mari Boya, who celebrated his birthday in style with a storming drive from 20th on the grid to finish eighth — a gritty and determined recovery that didn't go unnoticed. As Camara extends his lead at the top of the standings, the F3 grid now looks ahead to Jeddah — but the Brazilian has already made it clear: he's the one to beat.
