Madani adopted village and school initiatives exceed targets with private sector support
KOTA BHARU: The government's Madani Adopted Village and Madani Adopted School initiatives have gained significant traction among private companies, according to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. He revealed that the number of villages and schools adopted by private firms has surpassed initial expectations. Anwar noted that major corporations, including those with multi-billion-ringgit investments, have stepped forward to support rural communities as part of the programme. 'Initially, my target was only 300 schools, but private companies have adopted 1,000 schools nationwide, including in Kelantan,' he said during the closing ceremony of the Kelantan-level Program Madani Rakyat 2025. The event took place at Sultan Muhammad IV Stadium, with Kelantan Menteri Besar Datuk Mohd Nassuruddin Daud also in attendance. The Madani Adopted Village programme seeks to reduce development disparities between urban and rural areas. It focuses on improving basic infrastructure such as water supply, electricity, roads, and internet connectivity in selected villages. Meanwhile, the Madani Adopted School initiative aims to narrow educational gaps between urban and rural institutions. The programme fosters collaboration between government agencies, educational institutions, and private firms to enhance infrastructure, academics, and student development. - Bernama

Anwar reiterates call for large companies to 'adopt', support schools
KOTA BARU: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has reiterated his call for large private companies to get involved in helping schools in the country by adopting them as 'foster schools'. "Each company should adopt one school as a foster school, and my target is for 300 schools to be adopted because we have many big companies," he said in his speech at the closing ceremony of the Madani Rakyat Programme here today. Also present were Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail and Kelantan Menteri Besar Datuk Mohd Nassuruddin Daud. It was previously reported that the Finance Ministry was finalising an additional list for the implementation of the Madani Adopted School programme this year, which involves 1,000 schools, with an allocation of RM100,000 provided for each school. Education Ministry secretary-general Datuk Dr Aminuddin Hassim said that in the first phase, 504 schools under the ministry were selected by government-linked companies (GLCs), government-linked investment companies (GLICs), and private corporations. This initiative is a strategic collaboration between government agencies and educational institutions, namely schools, to enhance social development and character building among educators and local communities. Meanwhile, Anwar reiterated his hope that scientists in the country play a role in nurturing students' interest in pursuing scientific careers, especially in fields based on Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). He said the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI) has been tasked to identify 100 scientists who will 'go into the field' to visit schools, providing guidance to students on what they need to do to become scientists. "Today, since the Madani Rakyat Programme is managed by MOSTI and we have many scientists from universities and agencies, what MOSTI can do is select 100 scientists to visit schools to inspire children about what they should learn to become scientists. "At the same time, this approach will encourage students to be more interested in Mathematics and Science subjects," he said. Anwar described today's programme as an opportunity for the government to connect with and deliver information directly to the people, while highlighting programmes that need attention from government agencies. "At the same time, the people get to see firsthand what the government is doing," he said.

MMEA launches full probe into Pulau Perhentian boat tragedy
KUALA BERANG: The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) will conduct a thorough investigation into the boat capsize incident in Pulau Perhentian, Besut, which resulted in the deaths of three victims, including two family members. Its director-general, Admiral Maritime Datuk Mohd Rosli Abdullah, said that although the incident was reported to have occurred when the boat carrying 15 passengers was hit by a storm, his department will conduct a thorough investigation, including the boat's licensing, cargo carried, and ensuring all regulations were complied with. "We will conduct an investigation, including contacting the victims involved and carrying out a detailed investigation in various aspects," he said when met by reporters after the launching ceremony of the Madani Adopted Village and Madani Adopted School programme by the People's Volunteer Corps (RELA) 2025 at the grand hall of the Hulu Terengganu District Council here yesterday. The ceremony was officiated by Home Affairs Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail. Mohd Rosli added that his team always intensifies control and enforcement, especially since tourism activities on the beach and at sea are becoming more vibrant after the Northeast Monsoon season has ended. In the boat incident that happened at 10.30pm on Saturday, S. Arumugam, 40, and daughter A. Sarrvihka, 3, as well as female relative V. Vennpani, 10, died, whereas another two victims are still being treated in hospital, including one in critical condition, while 10 others survived. All the boat's passengers, aged three to 40, who were relatives, were said to have been on their way back from Pulau Perhentian Kecil to Pulau Perhentian Besar after dinner when a big wave suddenly hit the boat and caused it to capsize. In the same development, Terengganu police chief Datuk Mohd Khairi Khairuddin said his team, together with the MMEA and Malaysian Marine Department, always collaborate to ensure law enforcement, including among tourist boat operators. He also reminded all boat operators to ensure that all boat drivers are not involved in any crime, especially drug-related ones. "This is because, based on the investigation, the 20-something boat driver has five previous criminal records related to drugs. So, the police and other agencies will continuously enhance law enforcement from now on," he said when met by reporters at the same event.— BERNAMA
