By: Bernama Text Size: Auditor-General Datuk Seri Wan Suraya Wan Mohd Radzi. - pix Bernama KOTA KINABALU: The National Audit Department is strengthening its role in community development by adopting a village and school near Tuaran this year under the Madani Adopted Village and Madani Adopted School programmes. The department announced that the Kampung Topokon and Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Topokon were the respective village and school involved in the programmes, with allocations of RM1 million and RM100,000. Auditor-General Datuk Seri Wan Suraya Wan Mohd Radzi chaired the coordination meeting between various federal and state government agencies at Wisma Audit Sabah, here, Saturday. 'Following its successful implementation in 2024, the Government has expanded the programme to 200 villages throughout the country in 2025. 'The effort is in line with the whole-of-government approach that stresses on cross-agency cooperation to ensure quick and efficient service delivery to the public,' the department said in a statement, adding that the Auditor-General presented appointment letters to departments and agencies involved during the meeting. The scope of the adopted school programme would focus on upgrading the canteen to provide a safer and comfortable dining environment for pupils, while the adopted village programme would have four main areas, including upgrading the multipurpose hall, the futsal and open basketball courts, school facilities and community programmes. According to Malaysian Press Institute (MPI) president Datuk Yong Soo Heong, these have been the ethical crossroads confronting today's media landscape. 'Falsehoods are costly. Journalistic integrity demands rigorous fact-checking and transparency. Trust is a journalist's currency, and those who mislead readers will inevitably face serious repercussions,' he told Bernama recently. Yong acknowledged the undeniable benefits of AI in boosting newsroom productivity, but stressed that the core values of journalism, namely truth, accountability and human judgement, must never be compromised. He also expressed concerns over the increasing reliance on AI-generated content and the alarming rise of deepfakes, warning that, if left unchecked, these trends could severely erode public trust in the media. Yong noted that AI had transformed newsroom operations, enabling faster editing, personalised content delivery, and more efficient workflows, especially among younger journalists who preferred AI-generated summaries over traditional face-to-face interviews. 'Context, tone, and human expression are irreplaceable. Only direct engagement captures the nuances that make a story resonate,' he emphasised. He warned that AI-generated visuals had become a new frontier of misinformation, citing several recent incidents in Malaysia and the region involving misleading or doctored imagery. These developments, Yong said, underscore the urgent need for rigorous verification protocols before publishing any content created or enhanced by AI. He emphasised that AI should be seen as a tool for empowerment, not a replacement for human creativity. Echoing these sentiments, Prof Dr Manjit Singh Sidhu, an expert from the College of Computing and Informatics at Universiti Tenaga Nasional (Uniten), observed that Malaysian media organisations had been integrating AI at varying speeds, depending on their readiness and strategic focus. He said journalists who embraced change and learned to work with AI would not only survive the evolving landscape but also shape the future of trustworthy, meaningful journalism. He suggested news organisations develop and adhere to strict ethical frameworks when using AI, ensuring transparency in how the technology is applied throughout news production. To deepen media practitioners' knowledge of AI technology, Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) has coordinated five AI training sessions, one each in Kuala Lumpur, Cyberjaya, Sarawak, Sabah and the East Coast. Meanwhile, recognising the rapid pace of AI advancement, including in journalism, this year's National Journalist Day (Hawana) celebration had adopted the theme Journalism in the New Era: Embracing AI, Safeguarding Ethics. Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil, when announcing the theme on Tuesday, said the rise of AI had rapidly transformed the gathering, processing and dissemination of information, but emphasised that it must not come at the expense of journalistic ethics. The Hawana 2025 celebration will be held at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur WTC KL) from June 13 to 15, with the highlight, its opening on June 14, scheduled by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. Hawana forum key to strengthening journalism, says UB Sabah chief editor
Datuk Lichong Angkul – Bernama photo KOTA KINABALU (June 5): The forum in conjunction with the highlight of the National Journalists' Day (Hawana) 2025 celebration on June 14 must serve as a platform for the media industry to uphold and strengthen the institution of journalism amid the rise of artificial intelligence (AI), says Utusan Borneo Sabah Editor-in-Chief Datuk Lichong Angkui. He said this was crucial to avoid irresponsible parties from manipulating the sophistication of AI in ways that could undermine journalistic values and ethics. 'This special forum should serve as the best platform for all media industry players in the country to unify their voices in elevating the institution of journalism. We must be vigilant of AI manipulation while remaining united in defending journalism. 'The media forum is the best avenue for industry players, stakeholders and interested parties to discuss current trends in the world of journalism and, at the same time, seek solutions to AI manipulation, which is becoming increasingly widespread,' he said in a statement yesterday. Yesterday, Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil announced the theme of Hawana 2025, namely 'Journalism in the New Era: Embracing AI, Safeguarding Ethics,' and also unveiled the Hawana 2025 logo at Wisma Bernama. The Hawana 2025 celebration will be held at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur (WTC KL) from June 13 to 15, with the highlight of the event taking place on June 14, to be officiated by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. Lichong, who is also a governing council member of Ikatan Setiakawan Wartawan Malaysia-Indonesia (Iswami), said technological advancements and the internet had certainly helped the media industry by speeding up the delivery of news and information among organisations traditionally competing to break the news first. However, he said such competition could potentially lead to widespread dissemination of fake news, especially if AI is manipulated by irresponsible parties, and therefore, vigilance and proactive fact-checking should be strengthened to ensure the authenticity of news and information delivered to the public. He said it had become common for netizens to share viral news and information without verifying the source or authenticity, which is where the media played a critical role in ensuring every piece of content presented was accurate and trustworthy, thus elevating the integrity of journalism. Meanwhile, Lichong said the Hawana 2025 theme was appropriate for journalism in the modern era, where AI technology had become essential for the industry. 'This theme clearly emphasises the importance of balancing AI sophistication with journalistic ethics,' he said, adding that responsible and trustworthy journalism was a vital asset in the development of the nation. Speculation on Khairy's possible appointment to the Cabinet arose following the resignations of Rafizi Ramli and Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad from their ministerial posts.
