More Tamu Desa to be built in Sabah, Sarawak this year

Published on: Wednesday, June 04, 2025 Published on: Wed, Jun 04, 2025 Text Size: Ewon said 14 tamu desa were built in the Kota Belud area, part of the 98 premises completed across Sabah and Sarawak last year. Kota Kinabalu: The Ministry of Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives (Kuskop) will construct more 'tamu desa' (rural traditional markets) in Sabah and Sarawak this year, to enhance rural market facilities and empower entrepreneurs in both states. Its Minister Datuk Ewon Benedick said the Madani Government, through Kuskop, had allocated RM20 million to implement the Tamu Desa Development Project this year. He added that this included an additional RM10 million announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim at the Madani Rakyat Programme in Tawau last month. 'Last year, we successfully built and upgraded 98 tamu desa across Sabah and Sarawak. This year, with an allocation of RM20 million, I hope the same number or more can be built,' he said in a statement. He was speaking after officiating the Kampung Pinasang Tamu Darat Kaamatan Festival in Kota Belud and subsequently launching the village's tamu desa, which was completed this year at a cost of RM250,000. Ewon said 14 tamu desa were built in the Kota Belud area, part of the 98 premises completed across Sabah and Sarawak last year. 'I have been informed by the village leaders that these premises greatly benefit the residents, especially mothers and small entrepreneurs who conduct business weekly. They not only provide a more comfortable space for selling but can also be used for various community activities on other days,' he said. According to him, the requirements for tamu desa development vary depending on the location and scope of work determined by the District Office, whether for new construction or upgrading, involving costs ranging from RM100,000 to RM300,000. As of May this year, he said, applications for new construction or upgrading of tamu desa premises in Sabah had reached RM40 million, including applications carried over from last year that could not be implemented, and this amount did not yet include applications from Sarawak 'Although our budget is limited, what is important is the continuity of what was implemented last year. What we started last year will be continued and expanded this year. I am confident that this programme will be among the key inputs of the ministry in the 13th Malaysia Plan (2026–2030),' he said. The tamu desa initiative was also part of the government's commitment to pay special attention to the needs of rural Sabah and Sarawak, in line with the nation's inclusive development agenda, he added. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? KOTA KINABALU: The Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Ministry will construct more "tamu desa" (rural traditional markets) in Sabah and Sarawak this year, to enhance rural market facilities and empower entrepreneurs in both states, says Datuk Ewon Benedick. J-Kom's loyalty to government, not political parties, says its DG

JOHOR BARU: The Community Communications Department (J-Kom)'s loyalty is to the government of the day, not any political parties, says its director-general Datuk Ismail Yusop. Ismail, who was appointed to the role in January, stated that the department is an apolitical agency that follows the same processes as any other government department and agency. "This is a government agency, and its responsibility is to take care of the government of the day, not any political parties. "Even the appointment of officers under J-Kom must go through the Chief Secretary's office and the Public Service Department," he said during a press conference at the Madani Rakyat Programme here. He added that he had also gone through the necessary vetting process, including a medical check-up, before his appointment was approved. Ismail said this in response to a question about his efforts as the new director-general to improve public perception of the agency. The former PKR senator said he hopes to improve the public perception of the agency, which was previously under the Prime Minister's Department and is now under the Communications Ministry. 'I have also reminded J-Kom officers that their job is to serve the government of the day, whoever that may be. 'If they want to take care of their party, then they should just stay at the party. 'I am also a party man, and I am not embarrassed to admit it, but once you are in this agency, then you need to follow the process,' he said. The agency has long been marred by controversy, with two directors-general removed in just over two years, and questions have also been raised about whether it should exist at all. During the recent PKR party election, the agency was accused of instructing its staff to share campaign content of certain party leaders. In a statement on May 25, Ismail denied the allegations, stressing that all staff were carrying out their duties professionally and with integrity.

Public gaining deeper understanding of Madani Govt aspirations

JOHOR BARU: The enthusiastic response to the Madani Rakyat Programme (PMR) is a clear sign that the public is increasingly embracing and understanding the aspirations of the Madani Government. Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar said the three-day Johor PMR, which is being held at Toppen Shopping Centre, was the first to be organised on a medium scale. He said as of yesterday, the event had managed to draw over 45,000 visitors, far surpassing the initial target of 10,000. "One more day to go. Insyallah, we can reach up to 50,000 visitors. This reflects the growing public interest in government-led programmes," he told reporters today. Johor PMR 2025 involves 19 ministries and agencies, with a special focus on youths carrying the theme "Belia Madani, Yakin Boleh!". The main highlights of the programme include direct government services such as two-hour passport renewals by the Immigration Department, traffic summons inquiry and payment counters, and other services provided by the state government and federal agencies. Shamsul Azri said such programmes provide the public with direct exposure to the Madani concept, which is the foundation of the country's administration. "We want the people to understand what Madani is and the message the government is trying to convey by hosting such programmes. The public can see the initiatives and facilities provided for their welfare," he said. He said the public might not fully understand government policies, but the programme's face-to-face interaction makes explanations more effective. "Everything we do is for the people. We go down to the ground to engage with the public so that no one feels marginalised and knows that the government is always by their side," he added. Johor is the second location for this year's PMR tour after Sabah (May 9–11). It will continue in Lumut, Perak; Kuala Terengganu, Terengganu; Kota Lama, Kelantan; Nilai, Negri Sembilan; Baling, Kedah; Jasin, Melaka; and Bintulu, Sarawak.

PM urges tough action against corruption, calls for moral leadership

JOHOR BARU: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has called for firm action against all parties involved in corruption, saying such practices are harmful to the nation. He said leaders should not misuse their positions to accumulate wealth for themselves or their families. "In the past, people were afraid to take action, worried they would be seen as vindictive. "Yet, some individuals amassed billions of ringgit for personal comfort. Yes, you can be leaders, but not leaders who enrich themselves and their families. "This country must be saved. This is our commitment," he said in his speech when officiating the Madani Rakyat Programme and the National Youth Day celebration at Toppen Shopping Centre here today. Anwar, who is also the finance minister, touched on the concept of real and ideal development in his speech. He said development is not just about constructing skyscrapers or achieving economic growth, but about nurturing knowledgeable, civilised, and moral individuals. "Often, when development is mentioned, people think of economic growth, urbanisation, skyscrapers, highways, and new infrastructure. But what is the purpose of all that? "The real goal of development is human development — not just physical bodies, but people who are knowledgeable, moral, and compassionate. "What's the point of building tall buildings if they are occupied by people who are violent, greedy, arrogant, and oppressive? What use is a developed country if its citizens live in hatred?" he said. The Tambun member of parliament also called on young people to take an active role in setting an example for society about the true meaning of progress. "I want young people to lead by example and help educate the older generation, who may not fully understand what progress truly means. "Show that success is not measured by tall buildings, but by human values," he said. He said the main goal of national development is to build a caring, civilised, and respectful society, in line with Malaysia's vision as a multi-racial and multi-religious nation.
