Ruth Madeley to headline Being Heumann
Actor Ruth Madeley, of Don't Take My Baby fame, will play the disability activist Judy Heumann in Apple Original Films's Being Heumann, which is an adaptation of the activist's memoir. The film is directed by the Oscar-winning CODA helmer Sian Heder. Being Heumann follows Judy Heumann as she leads more than a hundred disabled people to occupy the San Francisco Federal Building for a sit-in protest in 1977, seeking the enforcement of Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, enabling accessibility to federal spaces to all. Heumann was bound to a wheelchair after being affected by polio at 18 months. Subjected to discrimination since her childhood, she turned to disability rights activism after being denied enrollment in a public school. She has led several campaigns and was instrumental in the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act through her civil rights organisation Disabled in Action. She occupied leadership positions under the Clinton and Obama administrations. Having starred in The Almond and the Seahorse and the Netflix film Joy, Madeley's big break came with the 2015 BBC drama Don't Take My Baby. Madeley, known for championing disability representation in the arts, was born with spina bifida - a condition affecting the spine and spinal cord development. She'll next lead BBC's The Rapture, a five-part adaptation of Liz Jensen's bestseller.

Richard Madeley 'in showdown with ITV bosses after facing GMB axe'
British presenter Richard Madeley reportedly faced the axe from Good Morning as ITV issued sweeping changes to its daytime programming. The 69-year-old host has been a staple of the morning news show since 2017 alongside co-host Susanna Reid and was said to be receiving a lucrative £300k salary for the gig before this 'bloodbath'. Madeley's position was said to be in the firing line after ITV announced a slew of radical changes to its daytime TV schedule, including an extension of GMB by half an hour, and Lorraine dropping to 30 minutes and 30 weeks (rather than an hour, the full 52 weeks). Loose Women will also only air seasonally. The new schedule will come into force from January 2026. Now, a source has told The Sun that Madeley was forced to negotiate his way out of jeopardy. 'This one has really rocked the ITV corridors because Richard is such a big name and a legend of daytime telly. On Wednesday, word started to spread he'd been axed,' the source explained. Then continued: 'But, by Friday, it became apparent Richard had a meeting with the network's most senior bosses and he's now being kept on in a more part-time role. He's got himself back on the show – but his hours are significantly cut.' The insider also added that Lorraine had reportedly been offered to retire as she celebrated 40 years of entertainment, but opted to finish her £500k contract through to the end of 2026. Kevin Lygo, Managing Director of ITV's Media and Entertainment Division, said at the time: 'Daytime is a really important part of what we do, and these scheduling and production changes will enable us to continue to deliver a schedule providing viewers with the news, debate and discussion they love from the presenters they know and trust as well as generating savings which will allow us to reinvest across the programme budget in other genres. 'These changes also allow us to consolidate our news operations and expand our national, international and regional news output and to build upon our proud history of trusted journalism at a time when our viewers need accurate, unbiased news coverage more than ever.' And acknowledged the impact this will have on 'staff off-screen' as they 'support them through the transition'. According to the Evening Standard, 220 of the 440 jobs involved in the production of these shows. As for Richard, he recently appeared on his daughter's ITV show, Chloe Madeley: A Family Affair, which sheds light on her life as a mother, career woman and wife to James Haskell. During the first episode, Richard spoke about his 39-year marriage to Chloe's mother, Judy Finnigan, with whom he presented This Morning for over a decade in the late 90s. More Trending 'I mean, sometimes, you'd have a row. And you'd get to work not talking. But the show was a cure. 'I mean, it wasn't, like, false, you actually did genuinely have to come on and do the double act. You would find that within maybe 15, 20 minutes of going on air,' he explained. Richard Madeley Mocks Chancellor Rachel Reeves With New Job Title After Inflation Rise
Richard Madeley mocked chancellor Rachel Reeves this morning by giving her a new job title after yet another bout of bad news for the UK economy. Inflation, the measure of how prices change over time, unexpectedly rose from 2.5% to 3% in January. That's above the Bank of England's target rate of 2%, and could slow down the economic growth Labour has promised to put at the heart of their government. So on ITV's Good Morning Britain, presenter Madeley put it to the government that the chancellor should have a different job title. While policing minister Diana Johnson claimed the inflation rise was a 'bump in the road', Madeley replied: 'I mean, it's all about perception isn't it? 'Do you feel that the chancellor, Rachel Reeves, is rapidly becoming the minister for putting a brave face on things? 'She hasn't really had any good news to bring us since she got in, has she? Let alone her personal predicaments with her CV.' The BBC found the chancellor had exaggerated how long she worked at the Bank of England on her LinkedIn profile by half a year. Reeves' spokesperson says that was an administrative error from her team. Johnson brushed past the comment about Reeves' CV, and said: 'I don't accept that. 'We have inherited a really difficult position and I think the prime minister and the chancellor were clear there were going to be difficult decisions the government were going to have to take. 'As I said, we have seen cuts to interest rates, we have seen wages growing by more over the last three years. So there is some prospect of good news...' Fellow presenter Charlotte Hawkins then replied: 'Well, I don't know, you say a bumpy road, but things do seem to be heading in the wrong direction with inflation going up, Bank of England halving its growth forecast from 1.5% to 0.75 this year. 'That does just mean things are even harder for people aren't they?' The minister replied: 'I fully appreciate we've gone through a cost of living crisis under the previous government, under that disastrous budget from Liz Truss and her chancellor, so things are not easy.' She pointed to forecasts from the IMF which said the UK economy is set to be the fastest growing in Europe in the next few years. 'I'm not decrying or doing down the fact that it is difficult for families and individuals,' Johnson said. 'I fully appreciate that, it is a bumpy road but I think the chancellor is going in the right direction.' She also pointed out that there have been three interest rate cuts since Labour were elected in July, and that wages are going up.
